I agree with @nagash, It's about the friendships created and what you can do together.
This is what I hope to achieve when creating my guild. Sneak peak below...

  • Professionalism and ruthless efficiency.

    And a good guild culture.
  • Maturity (not the 'Got totally drunk last night, dudes') type of maturity.  No harassment over the hours I play, which are many. No required voice chat. No required raiding. Basically, a guild that will let me contribute in peace.
  • I want a guild that mirrors these forums...
  • Nope. I won't join a guild that has rules for etiquette and respect.
That's already taken care of by hanging out together in social media - no rules necessary.
Don't hang out with people you don't like - and that carries over from social media to the guild.

Fair enough! You do your filtering outside of the game eh. I guess if you discover the right crowd of people you won't need formal rules as they should know how to act like a decent human being anyway. And, there's also the unwritten code that most people have to begin with.
  • Yeah, plus there's various forms of moderation going on if twitch is involved. But, it's more about having fun hanging out in the twitch channel combined with a basic level of respect for the twitch host.
Same if the mini-community is forming from a youtube or iTunes podcast.

Becomes fascinating to watch various mini-communities mark their territories for alpha, beta and launch.
  • A sense of humor is critical! But I've been in some games where people would laugh and joke around even during raids and during organized PvP/group events, which turned into a nightmare when trying to call targets or instructions. So it's also important that the guild have a good organizational structure, solid leadership, and a level of maturity to the membership that allows for more competitive play when people aren't goofing off!
