We are all just betting on a dream.  I am fine with that for now.

  • No pay to win.
    No free to play.
    Open ever evolving world.

Everything I read and viewed made me aware that someone out there might know how to really make an engaging lasting game.
Watching  lazyPeon's you tube on Ashes lead me to research what I could including the Devs.

And then there was/is the forever twinkle in Stevens eyes when he speaks about Ashes and bursts at the seams trying not to let all the secrets out!
    How can a gal resist?
  • Honestly, what sold the game to me is quite difficult to explain properly. It’s not the graphics or the gameplay itself. I think the moment I got sold and bought into the hype was when I was reading the first entry in the blog, “A New Beginning” and the introduction video for the Kickstarter.

It summed up the way I feel about recent MMO’s very well and it helped me reflect what I enjoyed about playing MMO’s to begin with when I first started playing them. It helped me judge why I invested time into them. I didn’t enjoy an MMO based on how long or how easy the grind is to reach the max level or collect the shiniest armour. The reason I enjoyed MMO’s in the past was because in my opinion they had a real sense of community.

Modern MMO’s such as Guild Wars 2 or Final Fantasy 14 are good games but they don’t feel like they have a community I can make relationships with. The instanced maps just mean that any meeting I have is fleeting; most party members are quick to leave the group once they’ve finished their desired task and aren’t particularly interested in small talk and most conversations will only occur within the Guild or Free Company you’ve joined.

Tools which you can use for LFG in my opinion make the game easier to breeze through but they eliminate the whole process of talking to people and getting to know them.

I actually enjoyed the days I’d spend literal hours typing in the same message in a town just to organize a 15 player raid. It meant that those players I finally convinced to join would eventually become people I could rely on. It just felt like games had a much more engaging player base in the past but perhaps I’m just old and cynical now.

    TL;DR

I read that the main design philosophy was making players interact and making it meaningful and based on the systems they’ve showcased it seems they might be able to pull it off.

  • I personally couldn't care less about economy and politics but the node system, class combinations, and lack of hand-holding got me. I want a game that has rewarding, difficult, socially-oriented experiences that matter. I love WoW because it is a raiding MMO with an epic story and I'm a raider, but that's all it has. im ready for a game that offers more than raiding. Outside my guild, i couldnt tell you the name of one person on my whole server. That was never the case in Everquest. The game was hard so people needed each other so we got to know each other. I want that for Ashes.
  • The thing that really piqued my interest was that Steven is an MMO gamer, and from there what really drew me in was the potential for community that the node system offers.

I think this game will have real community that rallies around what they have worked to achieve. I can see long term friendships developing from the activities around towns and such.

I also like the attention crafting and commerce is getting. While not really my cup of tea, I know others really enjoy that aspect and those types of players are generally mature and decent and they will be a great benefit to the community.
  • What got me was the idea of the node system and that the citizens of nodes will interact with the surrounding environment and shape the world through their actions. Also the developers. Giving us updates and being on board with the community, trying to give us what we want with what they can do and they seem more legit about it than most other developers.
  • Definitly the no p2w or p2convenience
  • Seeing that some of the team worked on SWG.
Listening to Steven talk about what he wants the game to be; this really reminded me of when Brad talked about Vanguard so it is both good and bad.
The live streams throughout the KS campaign (which brokered the goodwill to increase my pledge).
  • For me.
    • The developer's vision of making MMOs great again.
    • The reassurance of non-p2w
    • The node system
    • To a lesser extent, the team's history of MMOs they've worked on.
  • There are honestly so many things that just seem to resonate with me, ideas and concepts that as an MMORPG player just feel right. Not being forced into a faction, allowing alliances and factions to rise and fall purely driven by the player base. An involved crafting system that is both enjoyable and will give you a sense of accomplishment if you should achieve the highest levels of mastery. Simple things like seasons that change, where once you walked through a leafy forest you now trudge through snow and naked trees. So many other aspects I could go on with but the most important thing is Steve's passion for what he is trying to create, I just hope the dream comes true.

I have devoured every scrap of information I could find in the past few months and my appetite just grows, AOC is the first MMO I have backed in several years and it was a no brainer on my part, simply take my money.
  • 1. The amount of money Steven has on the line
    2. The quality and experience of the team he has recruited to date.
    3. The fact that I could get in early in the community.

In regards to MMOs, it's AOC or bust for me.  At least until I amass enough wealth that I can go the way of Steven and start my own project.  :P
  • Eh, there wasn't just one thing that sold me on Ashes. It was a number of things.
I had been looking forward to Everquest next and had been following it for years. This game seems to incorporate a lot of those same aspects.
  • The graphics, the art style and all the different zones with seasons.
    The music.
    Open world with open dungeons.
    Immersion.
no p2w nor a must to play all the time to keep up.

I could keep going ^^ But what I have seen so far is giving me the right vibes. First thing I have ever backed early on kickstarter too so I have to bee positive ;)
Looking forward to seeing more combat though.

  • The idea of a community of players coming together to build(or destroy) great things. Kind of reminded me of Star Wars Galaxies with player cities too.
  • summoner that is all ^^
  • The biggest thing that draw me is the same thing the op talks about. I love politics in games and miss participating in them.

On top of that, i i've been impressed with their design. I like how they are trying to make a sandbox that guides people down gameplay paths instead of just showing players the path. The node system sounds like a fun way for pocket communities to form in the game. The flagging system and death mechanic is really nice to me, i like how it encourages players to fight back and gets everyone involved.

Last but not least, it sounds like i will be able to play a lizardman with the tulnar race and i'm all about that.
  • The vision and my yearning for an mmo with no questions as to what its trying to achieve

A question, what is it that made you say "Huh, this game sounds like everything i ever wanted from an MMO" In other words, what sold you on Ashes? For me, it has to be the drama, especially the political drama that can arise when discussing different aspects of Ashes, such as nodes, caravans, and Node sieges. I find it extremely interesting to witness the lengths some would go to protect their precious investments in-game. The friendships and the rivalries that will form following one act of aggression or kindness. It reminds me of my prime days in EVE online. It's just........................." Interesting". So, what is yours?
Not the game, the sandals... The holy sandals of Steven got me here.
Are you the real Danger Dolan? Because if so, thank you for all the videos!!
Guess I'll have to disappoint you then. No I'm not. I just like the Dolan memes  Thats why I created this account.
