Server size and server amount.

So Steven has said each server will hold 10k concurrent players.
We currently have 170k signed up so for safety sake I'm assuming based on this, we will have 20 servers to hold us all..

Fast forward 2 years. I estimate roughly 500k+ registered accounts.. Will they be putting 55+ servers, or will they increase the size of concurrent players per server?

Comments

  • That's something I'm sure they'll assess and adjust based on how the game plays with different levels of concurrent players.  They'll certainly have a few stress tests during the beta process to help set a baseline.
  • Since they are using Google cloud tech for their servers, easy enough for them to add new servers quickly as needed. The problem lies in determining actual demand. They open up 10 new servers, six months later some are ghost towns with limited population. Do they merge, or have a lore-based reason for people getting ripped from one server and put on another? Which then leads to pissed off customers. Every MMO goes through surges in population, followed by a plateau, then a dropoff. Look to the Mother of all MMOs and their problems with server merges. Or just about any other one that uses dedicated named servers over floating fill.
  • Possum has said. "They'll certainly have a few stress tests during the beta process to help set a baseline."
  • Hopefully we get some info, better safe than sorry in my book haha!
  • It's going to be EUUUUUUUGE! Simply Eeuuuuuuuuuge!
  • They will probably not have that amount of players online simultaneously. Anyway they have the alpha and beta tests :)

PS: I want 100k players servers hahaha

  • If they have to mere]ge servers which I expect will happen at some point down the road I can see it being difficult as people will be like aarrrggghh years of building up node getting reputation etc gone.  However in a game where this can happen at anytime anyway this might be easier to stomach.  We are all told that a chataclysmic event forced the world to be abandoned.  So actually lore could very easily be employed to force people of their current worlds back into the world gates to find another new world raise from the ashes.  game mechanic= 4 quiet servers are warned of said chataclysmic event packs up their belonghings and blueprints etc and then all merge onto a new blank server alowing the old 4 to be closed. Just an idea.
  • *grumbles & grumps* While I do recognize the "need" for it, I despise server merges.
  • I've been a part of something pretty terrible launch day server issues and I'd much rather see too many server than not enough but then that does lead to merges sooner.

What I don't get is why companies don't let players pick a server, create a character and reserve a name in the few months before a launch. Then when the pop reaches a certain point, cap it off and not let anymore players create on that server. Would help server stability, reduce queue times at release and spread players over servers. It also gives people a chance pre-launch to get their plan set and be ready to go.

Obviously not a perfect solution, but one that may limit common launch hicups
  • I highly doubt we'll ever see 50+ servers but if keeping the numbers low, aka, 10k will help performance then I'm all for it. There's nothing worse than a PVP lagfest. It'll be up to all of us here to coordinate where we're going so we can hunt down those folks that gave us disagrees.............oops did I say that out loud? ;)

A lagfest of any flavor is abhorrent.

Oh some games are improved by lag ^^
  • 10k people on one server would be awesome. But I agree server merging in the future will be difficult. You will have to find a new node and a new house. not sure how that would work. I would accept it if numbers where low enough though.
  • I still have to wrap up my mind around this number, 10.000 at a time, meaning an average of 10.000 active accounts (with a submerged of many more thousand), or 10.000 total, active and unactive?

Whichever the case is astounding. In Pleistocene, when I played MMORPGs, if you had some hundreds or even 1.000 players at a time it was a huge success.
