I'm not really that much into lore but certainly won't name myself Ihaxutwdeth. I enjoy the lore more than I consciously live by it ingame if that makes sense?
I understand that names like buffnstuff or ikillzit (if you have a toon with these names please don't take offence) pay the bills with their subscription payments, but I personally try to stay in lore.
I agree with @Kratz, I tend to enjoy the lore more than I realize and try to keep from being immersion breaking for anyone else but I like to know it but I may deviate from it.
I chose other because i like lore, but i find myself invested in combat before the story line. with that being said, I do enjoy a bit of RP once in a while so i do plan on knowing some lore. I'm a RPPVPVE type. lol. I want it all to mash together.. #perfectdream

I think some of these names are driven by a frustration of finding a legitimate name. If you can't find an unreserved name, you result to that kind of name. That's why I'm in favor of mandatory second name combinations to open up the number of names. Or better yet, your account has a unique surname across all toons.

Gonna be lazy and quote this because @Marenor already wrote my answer for me.
Similar to some of the other posters, I enjoy being surrounded by good lore and I try to assist the sense of immersion that others have where possible. However, lore rarely dictates my character's name and the way I act in game.
My check list is simple. Fantasy ish name? Check. Fits Western or Eastern theme? Check. Name not taken and doesn't mean a swear word in any major language? Check. Okay, good to go!
In terms of RP, I'll play along with others if they start RPing first but I won't have the entire Ashes backstory memorized. I'd probably just know the basics. For instance, if in the Ashes's world, dwarves and tulnar don't like each other (even more than elves vs dwarves), I might play along with it and drop the occasional reference when I'm playing a tulnar and I end up with a dwarf in my party.
When I name characters I like them to be unique, but not what I would consider odd. I think players who come up with unique names like 7ate9 (bad example) are creative and I am glad they have that option. I also like reading and trying to properly pronounce the harder to read names, those with more w's, x's, and z's than vowels.
Names that "fit" the lore or share common nomenclature to the game world are super impressive, but much harder for me to do without stealing an NPC name or just adding a vowel or losing a consonant.
I stick with what I would consider normal/plausible names that if you heard in RL you would (hopefully) think "cool" but not give it much extra thought.
