Gear & Appearance

So in most MMORPG games I have played, I tend to take pride in how my character looks (with or without costumes)... I know you have plans of a cash shop based purely on cosmetics; however, I feel most games seriously lack when it comes to the appearance of regular gear. I hope the gear we wear isn't going to look horrible, just to persuade people to choose cash shop costumes, to hide the ugly gear we wear. lol.

As a vanity fanatic, I would still gladly buy costumes and put money into items in the cash shop - even with awesome looking gear!

But as someone who will have to pay a monthly subscription to play this game as well, I want gear that will look badass & cute/sexy too!

Another thing to think about: Females will play this game. A lot complain about their apparel being over-sexualized. "That barely covers anything! If this were real life, it wouldn't protect me from combat!" ... So you don't want it to be too skanky/revealing! That is not to say that we want to be covered from head to toe like a nun though either! Then you have a lot of males who role a female character. They say, "If I'm going to play endless hours, I'd rather spend it looking at an attractive chick." ... So there has to be a healthy balance. A medium that pleases everyone! And this will especially need to ring true on female characters, since both men & ladies can role as one.

Obviously the cash shop costumes will look better than our regular gear. Just please take the time to ensure our gear isn't hideous. Some time & effort spent on the vanity/fashion end of our regular gear would be nice. So many games I have played, the gear looks like crap. The costumes became a desperate attempt to hide my ugly, stupid looking gear. Lol! I don't just want to have good stats and play like a badass. I want to look the part & feel that way too!

Colors need coordinate together smoothly. Black with deep red, and hints gold. Or Black with white, and hints silver. Dark Navy blue! Earthy tones together, such as Olive green with brown.
Allow people to dye their regular gear, as well as cash shop costumes. Everything dyeable.
Not too much skin showing, but still just enough in the right places to be #Hawt
Not all cloth robes should look like long dresses. Some can look like skirts, or pants at the bottom. Not all plate should be bulky & overbearing. Some should could give off an "assassin" vibe. When it comes to "themes" the more popular ones tend to be styles that put you in the mind of assassins, gypsies, witches/warlocks... dark colors, or rich deep colors.

Also, hair options... PLEASE during character creations, allow us to have a large variety of styles, lengths, and colors for our hair. For males & females. A variety of makeup, piercings, tattoos, and scars. Each race be given their own options of height. Some games do not give you a height option. Breast size options would be nice...Some want bigger, others may want less jiggly/smaller ones. For males it would just be "Chest Size" for their pecs I guess lol. Customization of our character is key 3

Now, I'm sure you will create your own designs & unique gear, but to give some ideas/examples of gear (not cash shop costumes) that would look amazing...This is for styles and color ideas/examples - not asking you to directly copy:

Another good idea to help out - there are a lot of people out there who make mods for games. Such as skyrim & dragon age. They are talented at creating fashionable gear & skins. Consider getting feedback or designs from people who mod other games. They usually have good taste!
  • @Nymix, Intrepid have said that Ashes will have a character creation system similar to BDO. If you haven't played that game, here is an example of the flexibility this gives you :)

  • @lexmax I havent played any of their games yet, but I am looking forward to Ashes of Creation. Im sure there will be plenty of character customization. That's why I only lightly mentioned it. The main topic is the appearance of our regular gear (vs shop costumes) :)

^ My BDO character xD I broke immersion QQ but I hope in Ashes we have body tattoos xD Please Please Please do it xD I know it's being discussed xD
  • As long as the armor doesn't look like it's been painted on (like some other MMO) I'll be happy. I suspect the customization from character to armor options could be fantastic. I cannot wait for Friday in the hope we learn something more.
  • ^^^ Agreed!
  • ^^^^Double Agreed
  • Honey, I love me some paint!

Plus, some folks only used paint for armor, so... for me, depends on the culture.

Can I just wear body paint and no armor?

  • Well said.
My main character is almost always a tank and generally tanks wear heavy armour, (though not always) and I like to look good. I do not wear costumes, call me strange but in none of the games I play will I use a costume,(maybe that will change with ashes). But armour has to look practical even a little beaten up, perhaps a dent or two, a scratch from a blade or claw.
It is also important that we be able to dye our armour and those colours need to blend well, hopefully many of the dye's can be crafted I think this was hinted at.
I do have a concern that in an effort to make money the armour/costumes available in game will simply not compare to what will be available in the cash shop. I fully understand that ashes has to make money and I want this game to succeed but I don't want all the cool looking costumes etc to just come from the cash shop.

OMH I burned through so many mats in ESO finding an armor/color combo I liked. And once I found the combo I loved I stuck with it becasue I could craft it and look exactly how I wanted. This often meant bypassing fugly loot drops. Unless it was uber powerful better than the top tier crafted gear I would end up selling it.

Now will I invest in cash shop fashion? Most likely not, I am not one to invest in say a tux or that stylish outfit. I usually make due with what my sub fee provides me with.
  • I think those female characters would look gorgeous even if they wore a plastic bag, 'cause of that enormous curve of the waists. They're like the Elastic Girl from The Incredibles.

Of course you can my Dwarven friend! Just keep your stubby fingers crossed that the starting zone is warm ;)
