Fast Travel & Mounts

  • I'd be in favor of sparing located teleport locations and exponentially climbing fees to use them in rapid succession.

I remember queuing for the boat in L2 beta when it was the only way to the mainland, and enjoying the 5-10min social ride with others! Before they introduced teleports! Just had to run the gauntlet of the PKers holding the port for ransom! Fond memories!

And the long run between towns because too poor to use teleports!

But PvPing on teleport and getting to the fight after death before your party fully goes down was an upside on teleport locations!

I love fast travel. Some of us can't play 8 hours every day. If I have only 1 hour every day I want to be able to actually get to the place I want to do something in. Not to just waste 1h for traveling and not play at all besides it.

I wander a lot, even with fast travel. And to discover fast travel you have to get to that place on your own feet first. I think that's pretty fair.

Also -> with a world that is full of magic and science, it is only natural that someone would invent teleports, portals, or something like that.

I mean.... no one is forcing you to use it if you don't like it. You and your friends can ignore portals/teleports and play without them.

@freespiryt My previous posts were in regard to fast travel *in general*, since the OP asked a fairly generalized question: "what are your thoughts on these mechanics?" instead of "should fast travel be implemented in Ashes?"

I'm perfectly aware that fast travel won't be a thing in Ashes. I've watched all the live streams and soaked up as much info as possible. It doesn't really bother me if an MMO chooses not to make fast travel available, especially if there's a reason behind it, which as you and other have pointed out...there is. But would I personally prefer to have it? Yes. And is it a bad mechanic to have in any MMO, as the OP claims? Absolutely not. That's really all I was trying to say.

The caravan PVP is what I'm looking forward to most at the moment, after all.
    Gotcha.

I believe the "fast travel", that's being alluded to on this thread, is more along the lines of readily accessible teleports, flight waypoints, and such.

There is "faster" travel, and limited "fast travel" connected to scientific nodes, true.
  • Very interesting seeing the different thoughts on this topic. When I first heard no fast travel I thought it sounded nice and that it would force more exploration and maybe help give me some feeling of older MMOs that I started with. But at this point in my life time constraints can be an issue so fast travel helps. At the end of the day this will not hurt me too much either way in enjoying the game. Thank you to those who have really elaborated on their thoughts and feelings on this subject.

Yep. Limited fast travel is still significantly different than no fast travel.

Yes. For some reason people think that if fast travel exists, everyone is forced to use it.
Mechanically preventing zergs is a good plan, though.

We'll have to see if everything the devs envision actually feels OK once we're able to play.
  • I for one am glad they are limiting Fast Travel a lot. They're will be mounts you can use to get places quicker and scientific nodes will have teleportation within the ZoI.
I would love to see mages get a portal spell though as a utility with limited use possibly.

No one is forced to use it, but if it is there I am sure most people would.
