Naming Characters

Howdy all!  I am trying to figure out what I might call my main character in the game.  Previously I have used a naming plan for all my characters (not always the same but all my characters might have started with the same letter or have a name that translates into something which I find cool.)

Do any of you out there have any weird and wonderful naming conventions you use for creating characters?

  • Well i usually try to come up with a name that defines my character and also suits the class and race of that character. But if i fell like i'm wasting my time without any progress i just google wow character names generator and modify the results that i like the sound of. Another thing that we don't know and might affect the way we name our characters will be the fact that we don't know if we will have both a first name and a last name or just one name like in most mmos.
  • i try to read a bit of lore and get a feel for the naming styles of race...

... then I call my character XxxIAMBATMANxxX
  • Randomize name button got me mine.

    You stole my name thief!
  • Double stamped it :open_mouth:
  • This might be an aside, but I sure hope that Intrepid let's us have a space between names.  Like John Smith, and not something like JohnSmith.
  • At this point, I have a handful of names that I go with in every game.
In the past I have used Hawaiian names or African names or Inuit names.

First name with separate (but optional) surname has been confirmed :)

How do you PM a person with a space? Put it in quotes?
  • Thanks for all the responses everyone!  It is something I haven't really put a lot of thought into previously and now that I am riding the excitement train I have plenty of time to consider options.

@PacoPlacinta thanks for the tips.  With the gradual build up to the game I am going to get familiar with the lore of the game and maybe something will jump out at me.  I do like the variety in classes and races mentioned so far which will allow for some big decisions.

@lexmax I laughed hard and in my mind I could hear that deep raspy voice of Will Arnett saying "IAMBATMAN"

@Dygz I am also a fan of hawaiian names, it is a beautiful language and has a lot of similarities with Maori here in New Zealand.

@Warkov and @lexmax I like the idea of first and surname.  But that just further adds to the challenge lol!

    awesome, thank you!
  • Why don't you use a random name generator if you cant make your mind up. There is one here http://www.fantasynamegenerators.com/monster-names.php#.WWJHN7pFzx8 Its not the best one I have found before but it works

Do we know about hyphens, apostrophes, and non-english letters yet?  (And by "we" I obviously mean "anyone other than myself"...  )

You could wait for the naming conventions so you can pick something lore specific. What race are you going with?

  • don't think about names much as in a few months , will want to change it
  • I usually take names from Gaelic words, or whiskeys or after Scottish towns/streets, Mostly cos I can pronounce it and nobody else can so no fear of name stealing xD
  • I don't really have naming conventions, per se. For some games, I go with whatever I think suits the character. For others, I try Japanese variations of names, or Gaelic, or Valkyrie, or Inuit, or whatever floats my boat. I try not to "repeat" names, as my characters all have their own personalities, and I don't want to borrow a person from a previous game, who's at home in that game.

I may, however, break that for this game, and bring back some variants of previous names. Just haven't really decided that, just yet.

@Maquiame I truly have not considered race yet. I am likely going to wait for more lore to surface, as you suggested, then go from there. I guess that some background work needs to be done before settling on a final name.

@PlagueMonk you made me laugh. Good to see some scrambling for name protection going on. I agree there are some good names on here.

HA, since I don't comprehend such things as copy----right and silly "C"s and "R"s they don't apply to me. /Cites the roadrunner precedent in the rule book

"PlagueMonk Warkov" oh that's a good one too! See I can take your name and ADD it to mine! Muahahaha. >:)

Just so you know, my forum names never relate to my character names to avoid this very problem ;)

@rise_up to be serious for a min (and only a minute!) I usually take my inspiration from the race I choose and class to a lesser extent. I also have an extensive list of names I have used in the past but I am always searching and added one just last week.

The best piece of advice I can give you is, if the game allows a first and last name, USE THEM. Single "good" names are taken so quickly you can pretty much expect to not get it. A first and surname increases your "uniqueness" by orders of magnitude and thus virtually no one will have taken it.

I always name my self either "Beep" , "Boop", "Bungchung", or "CucumberLettuce", all of which i have forum accounts for.

I feel like I'm being consumed by trapper keeper!!!

I too like playing variations of my characters names from one game to the next.  For instance my original swg name was Sokolov War, then it went to Sokov, and now to Warkov.  I do let race/history play a minor roll as well.
  • @Warkov Ohh I see what you did there, very clever clever, worthy of a Skaven!  /points to Warkov's sig...sorry PLAGUEMONK Warkov's sig! :o

Queek! Welcome to Clan Pestilens my diseased brother rat! Long Live The Great Horned Rat! <3>:)
  • @PlagueMonk Is this what you mean by a Great Horned Rat? Cause gosh it is adorable!!  LONG LIVE THE GREAT HORNED RAT!

  • Im always Noe(something)
  • I think I know the name I'll try for...
It's a name taken from myths. Which means of course no ones going to get the history and just ask why my female has a blokes name :)

That's a good random button, now folks can say they were done in by Duninn. Great random name
