  • I know that the style of game they want to go with and a weight/size based inventory would be best. I'll just have to bring a pack mule when I go gathering. Hopefully this will be so unappealing to casual crafters I'll have plenty of business.

I'm right there with you @Loyheta !  I will just have to devote time to gathering and harvesting with my trusty pack mule right by me, or wagon if that is an option.  And I'm sure it will be one of the many ways to earn a good profit as well!

Pretty sure the devs have mentioned caravans running from mines to town.
It's not just town to town.

Caravans are for large shipments of goods over land.
Typically that will be to a town/city.
Frequently it will also be from a town/city.

Sometimes it will be shipping large amounts of raw resources from where ever you've gathered them back to town.
    That won't be uncommon.
Yyyyeeeaaaahhhhhh ... but that doesn't let me gather more stuffs while I'm out 'splorin!
Are you out explorin' or out gatherin' ! :)  There is a difference! Or, I hope there will be.

If you are out exploring and simply want to gather what you see, then it stands to reason you will be less able to carry things than someone who has outfitted themselves and embarked on an actual gathering trip.

I don't want to see those magical "collect them all!" bottomless bags of crap... I haven't seen any indication that this game will have them -- in fact it's the opposite, with weight encumbrance.

Not sure why players feel this will be a thing.
As I posted above, exploring/gathering happen concurrently for me. I do both together. I'd like to not be tethered; I don't want bottomless bags, but I also don't want to have to stop walking/exploring after 20 minutes because I'm too far away from my bank access.

Now, mini-mailboxes/post boxes along the way, with the ability to mail stuff back? I'd love to see that, but I wouldn't expect to see that in unexplored territory.

Pretty sure I'm not the only person who explores in this way, so I can say that we'd probably really appreciate not bein' tethered
Well, that's kind of what I'm saying. I don't think players should get to do what they want and have it come easy just because they feel like they like doing it.

You should not be able to explore "and also gather" without preparation, otherwise that devalues the commitment and preparation a dedicated gatherer puts forth.

Sure, maybe you can pick an herb or two or find some ore. But for actual gathering? That should be a dedicated activity for those committed to progress that way, not just out for a romp and find it convenient to do so. :)

Very much agree.  Since you would be out in the wild, maybe they could have a system of magical couriers "portable mail boxes/bank vaults".  Maybe some sort of magical limited use item that crafters could make, that would summon a magical courier beast that would allow you to unload your inventory into it's packs.  Then it scurries off while you continue on, and when you get back to the city all of your loot would be safely waiting for you in your bank/mailbox.
This isn't aimed at you, specifically... but this idea? It would devalue the entire economy... we really can't afford to have magic mailboxes and instal-bank access.

I'm not sure why everyone is assuming this game is going to behave like ArcheAge or WoW in this regard.  Everything that has been said so far indicates the opposite when it comes to stuff like this.
  • Since we do know it is going to be weight based, that mules and other mounts will have storage capability, I just can't see them kicking out support from under two of their four pillars of game philosophy.
Meaningful conflict through pvp actions. If they allow everyone to easily offload/safeguard their harvested materials with no risk of loss, it undercuts why someone would be bothered to try and kill you and take your stuff. They have said that harvested resources would be one of the few things you will be able to loot from green/purple players. Also if your goal is to disrupt resource gathering for that node to impact their development, having them able to bank said stuff easily also undercuts this.
Economy: To move goods to market the caravan system has to be something regularly and easily used. So if you think your mule can carry 200 trees or the equivalent, I think you are going to be sorely disappointed. Since we have seen almost no information and have no hard facts as of yet this is all conjecture and also subject to change at their whim. But I can imagine you having to make small forays into the wild near to your base of operations to gather, and then bring back to say your freehold, drop off there, amass a good amount, then caravan it to town for sale after processing or just selling raw materials.
Does this leash you from exploring. Most definitely. But it also preserves their goal of making resource rich areas that others don't have. Maybe 3 nodes over they have a glut of silver, and you have none at your node. Caravan from that node to yours is going to be the only viable option. Sure, you could ride over and get a couple pieces as souvenirs, but riding back on your mule with your packs bursting with silver ore, most likely not going to happen, and would be dangerous as all get.
  • I hope there's a weight system.

Wanna bet there will be a bag of holding as an epic loot drop from a raid.

Won't complain, if it's uber rare I'll sell the bad boy!
