Levels?

Just checking into the game.  Looked very interesting and the promise to innovate and not be a wow clone of sorts drew me in.  One thing I heard that had me concerned and wasn't sure if it was true.  Is this really going to be a classic 0 to 50 like leveling experience and not skill based?  Somebody please help me out...if it is that is the same old same old and I wont be investing in the game.  Anybody?

  • @beretta7 The progression in AoC will not be the classic 0 to 50.  There will be vertical progression that will access skills for your archetype.  You will have a secondary archetype that will modify your skills and that may be changed although not on the fly and with some difficulty.  There will be levelling in Social Organizations, Crafting, etc. which represent another facet for horizontal levelling.
  • As @Marenor said, there will be the standard vertical leveling, but your character will be able to level skills and stats through your secondary class, your religion and your node. You'll also be able to level your profession and your guild, which will help you progress in other ways.

One of the goals of Ashes is to give you too many things to do than you will have time to do. So, no rush to level cap, only to grind the same old things over and over again :)
  • Just max out your corruption, that's the real level cap!
  • Also level cap has not been decided yet.
  • They're deciding if it should be 45-50
  • The world will be as dynamic as possible which should mean there's no end game - or at least it will be different to anything we've seen before. You @beretta7, drive the endgame so you will constantly have things to do and it won't be classic progression to a stage of doing something over and over to get a new shiny.

  • I kinda don't want a level cap as level caps are for completing a game and you will never do everything in this games like BDO
  • They will determine it in alpha. Every single game has its speedrunners and powerlevelers that somehow think that by reaching the arbitrary cap fastest that they win. They have stated that it should take around 45-60 days for an average player to reach "cap". If we get in to alpha and you are getting levels too slowly so the game seems like a chore, they will speed it up. On the flip side, if during week one we have someone at max cap, they will adjust it. That is what that whole time process is going to be there for, balance, balance, balance. It really doesn't matter if they make a thousand levels where your increases in "power" are so slight to not be noticeable. Just like chocolate and cocaine, the brain likes getting rewards for repeated behaviour. MMOs like WOW have spent millions on data analysis and experts to tweak their levelling/reward systems to keep you mashing that button. Too fast, you get bored, unsub, and the game loses money.

i know right.  omg if you don't make this game where it hits 10478 of my 10478 items, i won't buy!
  • I like the paragon system from D3, even if you have thousands of levels it still doesn't break pve
  • One of the main reasons most of us are here and anxiously waiting for Ashes is because it promises, and to most of us we agree, to be different kind of game. One with no real end game due to  ever changing world dynamics influenced by the players.   There will be more things to keep you busy that rushing to that high level can be over shadowed by other paths you might take.

There will be a "endgame", if they make some guildwars zone lvl bulshit, i am quiting right away.

Its hopefully going to be a ever evolving endgame, with mby weekly/montly updates but that gives a disadventage to the casual players.
