I'm pretty sure clicking the link doesn't delete your account.  Probably takes several clicks and some 'are you sure?' question input(s).

I have been between the first batch of backers, what code should I use to link my account to the kickstarter account?

You should have an email (perhaps in spam folder) from Intrepid Studios with the title "Ashes of Creation Kickstarter Key Fulfillment".
This email will have your key code and the necessary link to apply your code too You need to ensure that your email on AoC forums matches up with your KS email
