Hidden quests?

Imagine you walk around the forest, pick up a rock and put it in your bag, suddenly when you are on completely different location, rock (that's in your bag) reacts to that specific location and quest pops up.

Or you cut down a specific tree, and quest pops up.

Or you do a specific emote at specific location and quest pops up.

Or you store 2 different specific items in your bag, one next to another, and they react and quest pops up.

Quests that you would otherwise never find, there are maybe specific not only to certain action you would do but also to a season and a time of day. Quests you would find by chance, and be surprised when you get them.

Some could be hinted through your surroundings and story, some may be left to a pure chance to be found.

Of course there would be classic quests also, but maybe would be nice for some quests to be hidden like this.

  • Yep! I would like to see random quests/events make a come back to MMO's.

This feels a lot like a throwback to the original 2007 Runescape where you'd have random NPC events that would teleport to you or teleport you somewhere else to do a random event.

I'm surprised this faded out of games...

I can see that, by design this game could be considered as a completionists nightmare.

i'm certainly guilty of consulting online sources to help me through quests in the past but I do really fancy the idea of a game where there isn't any walk through simply because the world is in such a constant state of flux as to render a walk through impossibleish.  That would be quite an accomplishment and I think a step towards a more unique and more dynamic experience
  • Yeah, random and unexpected quest are great!
  • Just sitting hear mining and for some reason I find a skull and for some reason decide to carry it around with me... at some point said skull starts talking
  • 100% so far!

I didnt actually read the post...
  • I would love to see this in Ashes. My only worry is that it would take a long time to create enough hidden quests to be worth it. To create quests that only trigger when something very specific happens, like /dance in an abandoned glade with 5 friends during the fall with a pumpkin on the ground to summon a scarecrow world boss, would be time consuming albiet very cool. If the devs also created books or rumors that hinted at possible secret things like that I think it would be worth it because there are people, like me, who pay attention the the lives of npcs and read books found in game (loved doing that in Skyrim) and it would be cool to learn valuable and useful information from tiose activities.
  • This would be awesome. Always loved these sorts of things in Elder scrolls games where you'd pick up a generic book but it would give you a quest which the book would hep you uncover treasure or something. Need more of that in my life.
  • In principal, yes

Quests that have unique successive triggers, making replication by others not frequently achieved thus creating rare opportunities / rewards!

Having obtained a rare item that was believed not to exist in a MMO was a great reward! Having that held behind a quest or mob that's path is difficult to reveal or replicate would be most appreciated!

  • Hidden quests like how you describe make the world feel more alive. When the game world feels more alive it really helps me feel a sense of immersion which is really important in any video game. I am 100 percent in support of this idea. In fact I'm kind of upset I didnt think of this first and share it here.
  • "Hidden" quests lose all its meaning with the internet .-.

But you can make people believe there is some hidden quest but it's actually some high lvl monster, and you eat popcorn as he is killing that player
  • As a player who likes exploration and discovery  hidden quests are great. As people have mentioned above hidden quests are only hidden until they are discovered.  However if you are an exploration and discovery fan, trawling the internet so you don't need to explore or discover things is not going to be your play style.  So in my opinion the internet only ruins this if you allow it to.
  • Anything different from the normal quest grind would be cool in my opinion. Good suggestion!
  • Like finding pages of a lost book you find while questing,it pop a quest or now you can read the book, understand more of it and telling you a hint about a guys or a location that might have a vibe of a quest....would be very sick to those who take time to read and pay attention to small details....even myself I dont really pay that much attention :D:D
  • I think all kinds of ways would be interesting and fun.
  • I am all for this!
  • I would love it!
  • well lets get this thread pinned cus its pretty one sided. id lvoe to see IS do hidden quests. though.....isnt everything hidden untill found in this game?
  • Not too many this way or this way becomes the "norm" and regular quests become the "special" ones
  • It sounds quite fun having hidden quests as long as there where not to many of them.
  • Why so many Polls?

You're an inquisitive guy aren't you?
  • Yes and you get a unique item from it. Like a pet or piece of clothing that you can only get from doing that quest. Maybe you are fishing and you catch a specific fish at the right location and you get a quest and it gives you a really neat fishing pole or something.
  • THIS THIS THIS!!!

    This is what I crave...

Hidden quests that result in unique items like the rumors state...

Maybe wandering through one of you usual secluded hunting grounds that few ever even come through any more reminessing of your first time questing in the area you come across something unusal during the winter months resulting in you find a strange quest item that turns into a three month long journey rewarding some mystical unique item/quirk (nothing game-breaking, just neat)

I miss this kind of thing, Blizz sort of did this with the legendary skins for the artifact weapons, but this kind of thing needs to show up. Not to mention, if you are a player dedicated to playing this game and stumble upon something like this through your normal playtime...
  • Grow an avocado. It's hard but if you can do it you have free guac for life.
  • I'd love to see hidden quests, even though they wouldn't stay 'hidden' for too long since they will go on the internet sooner or later, some unique loot would be nice too :3
  • Hidden quests with different rarety would be fantastic add.
  • Pretty sure the whole questing system in the game will be based on discovery of some sort.  I imagine there will be tons of "hidden" quests that need to be discovered.  Intrepid basically stated they didn't want to do any "hand holding" with quests, so I imagine almost all quests need to be discovered!
  • Holy mother of necro
  • I believe in one of the live streams Jeffrey Bard said that some quests may take years to discover.
  • Yeah this would be good. I would like every quest to be meaningful though, not just oh hey here's 50 exp n 5 coins on completion.. I hate garbage quests like that, nasty waste of time and not worth the effort it takes.. I like quests to unlock skills.
