So yeah it depends on your usage case. Are you aiming for 4K? then maybe a top card is the only way. Are you aiming for high Hz? Then a top card might be your only option as well, depending on your resolution. If you're aiming to do 1080p or 1440p then no, a top card is not needed, defenitly not when Ashes is out.
Don't forget HDR, in the race to 4k people seems to have forgotten that resolution is actually quite far down on the list when it comes to image quality. I would say (1080p+HDR) > (4k, no HDR), the difference is quite mind boggling. Of course this is hard on your graphics card.

Frustratingly  HDR is coming to Tv's and consoles first, right now there are only 2 PC monitors on the market that are built for it (Samsung CHG90 and Samsung CHG70, not 4k), which don't really reach up to true HDR standards. Acer and Asus will release theirs at start of 2018(probably around 1500$), these have 144Hz and 4k.

HDR is rubbish in Windows 10 atm. Until they fix that I wouldn't bother with HDR. It is the future though. When Ashes is out it'll probably be on every new monitor, and hopefully Microsoft has gotten their shit together.

Imma just get a 400-500$ monitor around the time of release. Hopefully they have 144gz HDR everything 4k for that price then xD>

Hope so. Cause paying 1000+ for a monitor is a bit overkill.
  • I'll be honest, I intend to upgrade.. but who knows what my financial situation will be like by then.
I bought a ton of stuff this year, redecorated my entire room and will be paying it off for the rest of 2017, however this may turn out better for me, as I assume NVIDIA will be releasing their consumer volta around Q4 2017 if pushed or Q1/2 of 2018.

Once 2018 hits I'll be able to start saving and I intend to go all out on my next build.  :D

You'll be able to find a used one for that price for sure. Even though retail monitor prices devalue very slowly, a good one usually lasts you around 10 years (before dead pixels, etc, "enters" the picture). I always buy my computers/monitors 1year old for half the price.
  • I usually build a new $1000-1200 PC every 6 or 7 years anyways. Launch should coincide with that timing.
  • I just built a gaming rig, but may end up building a new one in a couple of years.
