makes it seem they won't go with any account name reservation like you said.
Why? Because with @Account you'll have that for every single character, and would only need one reservation (it does specify character name, and that you only get one reservation, hinting at possible more buyable later?)
They will probably sell more name reservations later when we're nearing release. And it might be included in the pre-order packs that we will probably see nearing release.

@Azathoth Agreed.
Singular naming conventions are a horrible design, lazy in implementation, that could be forgiven in a first gen game, but not something new reimagining what an MMO is and should be.
There is no reason for a game trying to emulate a virtual world where character names should be unique. It's an immersion breaker and a ridiculous convention.
Additionally anyone can look at the slew of games preceding where singular naming has caused no end of grief for both the developer and players. They should really think through this, look at history, and find a proper solution - not the easy one.
Or where combination has to be unique, but separately they can be shared.
No #123 names please.
You may have misunderstood; the first name is unique with last name being optional and not unique.
It's 2017, who makes first names unique anymore in mmos?
Those that are tired of seeing 50 variations of Drizzt, Sephiroth, and Harambe's running around their servers.
With the first having to be unique I would think there would be more variations of popular names as opposed to the name itself. I'm not sure which I would like less.
That way there won't be a Leet Epeen or WTF Pwn running around.....
So far, I have only heard Steven say first names confirmed (so far) and last names being optional.
So I'd vote for a unique combination of non unique first names and surnames, both are visible in any chat functions, and if in the game world folks choose to hide one or the other, an inspection would let you know who you're taking to \ groups with...
People, for a variety of reasons, have changed their names to incredibly odd ones. I don't know if a court would allow "WTF Pwn" though...
You only need to worry about those on your server (so only in the tens of thousands!). Hopefully everyone will be able to get their first choice (unless you are after Legolas).
I’ve never used a second name. I have played games that had them as optional but I never bothered. Just not my cup of tea,I guess. I hope they are an option for those that like them, but not compulsory for those that don’t care. Then everyone can be happy.
I am not trying to argue for mandatory family names, I am just wandering if there would be a situation that would prompt you to use the option. I have never used a family name with any of my characters, but I am considering it knowing it might be an option.
Might have more to do with having lots of names floating around in my head for writing.
I know some people I have played with had last names but I never knew them as such. Even some long first names just get abbreviated in a lot of cases.
So it's not important to me but happy for others to have everything they want.
I agree so, if you are really wanting to change your random name, perhaps that could be handled in game with an application and fees to a court that appears in nodes at the Village / City / Metropolis level.
Edit: but I got this name reservation form saying nobody can buy mine...
