Regular Event Idea - Metropolis Run
Come, test your speed, agility and tenacity in the greatest race ever seen. The contest is open to all comers, both those local, born and bred on the streets of our fine metropolis *pause for applause*, and those from lands far and wide. Race for the prize, for the glory, the fame, the adoration of the crowds and for the veneration of the gods.
You will race from the East Gate, across the bustling metropolis to the West. Not a straight run down the Concourse, no friends, you must experience our fair city in all its glory. Four checkpoints have been raised throughout the capital. From each you shall collect a flag. The first challenger to pass through the Western Gate with all four shall triumph.
Choose your path wisely, as victory shall come to those not only fleet of foot but fleet of mind.
Come now, who will test their mettle. Who among you was made for glory?
Once a month a race would be held in a node that had made it to the Metropolis stage. An activity for people to show off their knowledge of the city, from the winding back alleys to the wide thoroughfares. It would be an official race run by game mechanics.
- Open to all – citizens pay 100 gold entry fee, non-citizen 300 gold
- No mounts allowed
- Set time each month, so everyone can prepare well in advance
- Four checkpoints set up around the city, randomised each race, but the same for all competitors
- Checkpoints staggered throughout the city in non-linear pattern so route choice will matter
- At each checkpoint a flag must be taken, these need to be carried to the end
- Not a straight race, some jumping/climbing would be required, potential shortcuts found
- Obstacles would be added throughout the city in the shape of small events - traffic jam due to overturned cart - that would occur throughout the race to provide a dynamic circuit
The idea here is to provide a fun competition each month that would really reward people’s knowledge of their Metropolis. Due to the random nature of the checkpoints you could not plan the route ahead but would need to know all the back alleys and the shortcuts: choose Jubai Street that curves around the Temple, or choose to jump the walls and run across the Temple courtyard tempting the wrath of the guards.
The prize would be a nice little bag of gold but mainly it would be the prestige and the potential cosmetic items:- A special cloak design only provided to victors
- Key to the City – an ornament for your player housing
- Winged Feet – a purely cosmetic effect that would once a minute add little golden wings to your feet for a few seconds and cause you to take a few steps slightly off the ground
- A Title
The events that are set across the city to provide potential obstacles would be set in motion once the race began, some to be triggered immediately, others as competitors reach a certain checkpoint. Imagine running around a corner you thought would be clear only to find an agitator spouting fiery rhetoric from a makeshift platform to a crowd partially blocking the street, or suddenly being confronted with a small stampede of escaped pigs bursting from an alley near the butcher’s quarter, the possibilities are endless.
Just a little idea of the kinds of things I would love to see in Ashes.

@Elder you mean like rogues having sprint buffs or something? I guess that is a thing, but maybe you would be kept to running speed so these things wouldnt kick in. I know that in WoW there were a number of times where you couldnt use any speed enhancing stuff or the quest immediately invalidated so it is easily doable. Lorewise they could say there are race marshals that are watching to ensure people stay within the rules. No magic potions for speed, no magic spells, just old fashioned athletics. kind of like anti-doping rules
I'm afraid I would never win this because my sense of direction is atrocious, i would end up lost in alleys somewhere but it would be cool to watch if you could spectate from balconies or something.
Because I mean what can a Tank do against these classes in the terms of speed and agility.
Mages have Blink and Levitate
Rangers have Fleeting Shot/Dash
Seems like class abilities could be used against opponents - even if you don't kill anyone. I suppose flagging red disqualifies a contestant.
We have no clue how augments would affect racing - especially racial augments.
Actually, racing on mounts would probably be the best way to go.
Would probably want to have each contest restricted to a specific type of mount, but that would level the playing field as much as possible.
If this will be a game mechanic event, then movement speed should be set the same for everyone, so it is a fair race.
Short legs and big bellies
I am hoping that basic climbing (not necessarily the Assasin's Creed style parkour) will be open to all classes. If I can't climb over a fence but others can, then colour me disappointed. I don't, however, expect to climb over that fence and then up a wall and jump between balustrades, swing around a flagpole and somersault onto a rooftop.
Just thought it would be a fun idea to have a race. I know WoW had a bunch of mounted race modes that were pretty restrictive and timed events, but I thought something a little more free-form would be nicer, that would allow you to show off your knowledge of your city.
You could expand and have a race across an entire zone, and have this be mounted. This could be a free-for-all. It would be a pvp minefield, but all the more fun for it as you know what you are getting into when you sign up.
Easy enough to show off knowledge of the city on mounts.
And less hoops to jump through.
Fun idea anyways.
