I just got an idea so thought I'd share it to hear what you guys think.
Our accounts fo the game is already made, right?
What if Intrepid allowed for us to befriend eachother now, with those accounts, and then had a system in place that makes that list import itself into the game when it comes out?
(Though that list would have to be filtered based on Region and Server)
Ex of process:
Create new Character
Checkbox if you want to import list for said character (some want alts that are hidden so)
"Create Character"
Importing friendlist
Checking friendlist
Adding friends (as well as leaving a marker that works as an automatic "Add friend" sort of thing)

Considering the limitations of Vanilla Forums, Intrepid Studios would have to develop their own "Friends" plugin that will be compatible with the game once it is live.
Was not talking about on the test servers either, it's a reason why I stated "when it comes out."
which goes for the forum friend list too
This will be abused for more than just "playing in piece when you can't be bothered by anyone else".
If you just don't want to be listed as a chat option, I would be okay with that. That would likely be my default setting.
If you don't want others seeing your avatar by appearing offline, that's a cheat in the mechanics.
Game Settings -> Ignore Duel Requests
Game Settings -> Ignore Trade Requests
Just speculating, but we will most likely get those options as all MMOs in the past 10 years have them.
Also, if you don't want your friends to spam you, create a new custom chat tab and exclude PMs from messages that will be displayed.
There are way too many people that have me added on XBOX Live that I removed over a year ago due to one reason or the other. I keep my niche of about 50 friends that I chill with on a daily basis around and that is about it. I am not against large guilds and friends lists, but I tend to ignore random people unless they are doing something similar to me.
First is because of most of us playing on the alpha server prior to launch. While I understand you said this would be for launch, any feature that ties into the game has to be tested first, and I don't need to worry about maintaining a friends list that has active tracking of my account prior to getting where I'm going for launch.
Second is because I don't need my friends tracking me in game / out of game period. For in game tracking you need to be in my guild, outside of that you don't need to know what's up. I don't mind an in game only list, hopefully that's data limited (doesn't report location / activity). I don't need anyone outside of the game tracking me in a PvP centric game. Related to this is being "account level" friends. If you aren't part of my guild, or don't have my phone number you don't need to know if i'm playing, or what i'm doing. Don't need anyone reporting data to folks i don't want to know.
While I get that you should be careful with friends, that doesn't negate my issue. Take the ultra massive betrayal that happened in EVE. You don't think those guys knew each other, and had friends lists and crap forever? Bad things happen when folks have too much access to info. Just trying to keep me and mine covered.
It's really nice to keep track of every friend in community you have and see what they post or comment. That's a nice function in the community to have, but then I would rather have the other functions in here to work first; like "support" badges, search function and so on (what @UnknownSystemError was trying to say).
To transfer your friend list from the community to the game: you don't need that, because those you have on your friend list will automatic inv each other when the game is released (you talk with them, so it's not hard to inv them). Then we have the complicated thing about Privacy out of the way.
To be mentioned: it's weird if all on your friend list can see where you are in the AoC world because it's based on open PvP, so don't think it will come true in that way haha
