How do you think Cash shop cosmetics should compare to In game cosmetics?

  • I love the first idea. I'm sure it's not perfect and could do with some polishing, but the basic idea I like it.

I personally believe that either one of two possible systems would work well for a game like Ashes.

The first system is that when developers create a new look, it is graded as either tier one, two or three.

Tier one is put in the game as fairly easily obtained items, crafted, quested, whatever.

Tier two go up on the store.

Tier three are the best looking items, and should be put in the game as rewards for long and difficult quest lines, or as a drop from a difficult and/or rare encounter.

This what you said with a slight variation Tier Two to include moderate challenges in game.
  • Both need to be epic and awesome. Why? Earning something in game should feel good. Spending money on the game should feel good and if the game does not make money, we wont have a game.
  • From what I've seen so far, these Devs are doing a pretty kickass job of keeping the game balanced and fair in every other way while still introducing *actual* new improvements to the MMO scene. I trust them entirely to make the right call with cosmetics.

This is a sub-based game. All they have to do to make money is make it worth subbing to. Cash shop is a bonus but it shouldn't be the main attraction for the game.

I totally agree, its a sub game and it would be nice to have these items available in game by completing a quest/s or set of tasks. In my opinion the cash shop is just for people who want the items now. I feel the item is worth more to you if you were able to achieve it in game.

Just on a side note by subbing will you be getting a monthly amount of embers and how will embers be achievable for your cosmetic needs.

Not having a Cash Shop in the Game at all
Intrepid has gotta make as much income as possible in order to keep the game running so it's probably best to have at least one of those behind the game somewhere.
  • I'm curious if there will be a way to use in-game earned items as skins to cover what you are currently wearing. Like if I could get that epic drop from a boss mid-way to level cap and still use it as the appearance while I'm still leveling. I wonder if cash shop skins will be the only way to do this or if there will be a way to use in-game drops too.
  • there is a hint that point to an artisan class that's able to craft costumes.

also, Steven said that players in game can design the way some crafted items look.

Games have run on just box price and subs before and there is one in development now. Necessary no,
Helpful for further development yes, if it gets used that way.
Usually it would be FTP with Cash Shops.
Usually High Box price or a Sub would not have Cash Shops.
Not until recently have companies actually tried to add Sub and Box prices to Cash Shop model.

Making games is a business of course people who make them want profit nothing wrong with that  Given the history of how Cash Shops have been used, it's reasonable that people are cautious and saddened by the inclusion of a Cash Shop to a Subscription game.

The simple fact is we have no way of knowing how the cash shop money will be used we will have to wait and see. Steven come come though and use it in a way that is balanced and truly helps progress the game forward. The opposite could be true as well.

For many people that part of the trust will have to be proven with action, I really hope it is earned game has a lot of interesting ideas that would be great if they all get implemented. Can;t speak for other but until the trust when it comes to Cash Shops I will remain cautious until the rust is earned. As I said before tho I feel Steve is genuine about the game and he has my trust in just about everything except the cash shop until that time comes. I'm a believer in the game as a whole but the cash shop has me on a fence.

I will also say this to when the time comes and he does earn the trust of the cautious when it comes to cash shop, it will be huge for the gaming industry whether I like Cash Shops or not. It could show that a game could earn high profit while still continuing actual progress on the game and balancing the value on in game items to Cash Shop items which is almost non existent in situations where it gets used.  I would still feel Cash Shops shouldn't be in sub games at that time but would be honest of the huge positive impact it could have in the gaming industry where it's not all about the greed  that high profit could be earned while still giving back to the players by continuing progress on the game. Most companies don't do this they pocket the profit barely put any of it on development and just come out with new ways to make more money. So if Steve makes high profit while still actually lovingly continuing development in the game even if I dont agree with it he would have my respect and I would consider him even more than I already do as a man of integrity.

It's no secret how apposed I am to cash shops but I don't want people to get the wrong idea that I don't believe in the game as a whole or that I don't respect Steve aas a hole either. Even with my caution on Cash Shop it's still in my tup 2 list of games I want.

I feel like you are Missing an option. One more option would be
Skins From the Cash shop should be unique and limited, but not as to be superior to Difficult obtained gear.

Bring a sense of balance, make the cash shop offer unique items that are nice, that forces ppl to buy them, but if they are better looking than some difficult gear than there becomes no point on grinding those out.

This really. All of the game should look as if it belongs, graphically it should fit. It makes no sense for one option to look vastly superior over the other, things should just be unique. Reward gear should be clearly indicative of the achievement one has set, whereas shop gear should make you look as if you fit in the world, not overdone nor underdone.

yeah unless the actual end game is a fashion contest where we vote on the best looking character there is no way cash shop appearances can be construed as p2w. To me I've always wanted cash shop stuff to be convenient. After reading stuff in this thread I do agree that stuff paid for with money and not work should be lesser than in-game obtained variants.

Now I have thrown a little money here and there for these nice looking things (griffin and raptor lol) and I would have purchased more if I:
    • Knew if similar versions could be earned in-game
    • Prices came down a bit
    • Knew a bit more of their stance on exclusivity and what they mean by that

I really want to know if exclusive skins are just a specific color or if the whole model or texture is exclusive. Now if there is going to be raptors I can earn in-game that are just colored differently then I am fine with that. If I can get similar armor skin models with different textures... hmmm maybe.
Dunno why you think that fashion contests are only endgame events.
