A minimum distance for ranged attacks, especially for the ranger are important.
It will promote smart gameplay at the same time as increasing immersion. Also, since rangers usually have high damage, this will serve as a form of balancing. This will also promote more decision making and positioning which is more fun for a player playing the ranger and more fun to play against.

With this said, this does not mean the ranger should be useless during a close meele fight. Abilities designed to help the ranger in meele ranged should be avaible. An example of this could be some kind of vault or tumble.

By not having a minimum distance some balancing and gameplay issues appear. For example a leather armored dude staying still in meele fight vs a large barbarian bashing him with simply sounds stupid. Also, this will ultimatly lead to rangers simply fighting in meele which is completly counter intuitive.
You haven't seen The Lord of the Rings?
Legolas is an archer.. He point blank shoots Orcs n Goblins in their eyesockets, then pulls out a dagger n cuts their throat before kebabbing another 3 with a single arrow.
as much as I hate the knife ears I must grudgingly admit that they are the masters of bow and short blade but not everyone will be a elf.

I guess my only response to that, is this:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEG-ly9tQGk

    That was an awesome video!
Occasionally I try to post something helpful that fosters discussion.
But I try not to make a habit of it.  ;)

Pretty sure you were human ;)
  • He must be a Reptilian Tulnar (・∀・) ...  I'm pretty sure an Undead Reptilian-one-eyed-"Deathless" edgelord should be suitable for @nagash ≖‿≖

still, I wonder if different bows will affect the range. e.g. will a longbow have more range but is weak in close range while a compound bow may be better in close range but loses damage at max range. it is something to think about.

Lord of the Rings was directed by Peter Jackson... the same Peter Jackson that had elves leap over a dwarven shield & pike wall in what may have been the most spectacular tactical idiocy I've ever seen on film.

Make no mistake, it was beautifully filmed... it was just mind-boggling in its stupidity.

I'd suggest we not take any of Jackson's work seriously.  ;)
  • Really, once we introduce fantasy (and the game is fantasy) anything should be possible. I think, for me, the only balancing act would be if rangers were highly effective at all ranges. I suppose if they were more squishy than fighters, but not as squishy as mages, it would all make sense to me.

But with no weapon locking, and I assume no armor locking, having an artillery cannon that can melee (even if it's shooting from a bow) as well as a fighter seems a bit unreasonable. Unless, in turn, the fighter has abilities to let them be just as effective with the same range.

...but then it all turns to 4th ED. so I am out...

If the ranged classes want to take abilities to make them more effective close up, and the melee classes want to take abilities to make them more effective at a distance, then I think they should have those opportunities. The reward would be greater versatility, the risk would be less effective at any specific range increment.

I will have you know a regular person can leap a midget wall, let alone a nimble tall agile elf 😂😂

Well yeah. Everyone can hop over a Dwarf... except for another Dwarf.

Still, Elves are smart enough to not jump in between a wall of pikes and a charging horde or Orcs.

Jackson throws common sense out the window in order to get some cool cinematic sequences, rendering his films utterly unrealistic on many aspects.
