Action Combat Teaser Discussion (Weapon Swap)

Video of Combat with Weapon Swapping

So overall the combat looks pretty good and much more fluid than previous other videos. Seems like the studio is making a lot of progress, overall thoughts?

One things I would like to point out is that we saw two very interesting things...

  1. Dodge Roll
  2. Weapon Swap

  • Yea, I'm really liking it and this is just first pass. I'd probably be happy playing it as is so i'm excited that we will have a chance to polish it up.

It looks amazing! I can't wait to try it next month!

Edit: I guess I should state my worry of tab target and action combat at the same time but they have addressed that they know the complexity of the task and that they will have 7 months to flesh it out.
  • I enjoyed the video a lot. Combat looks great. The effects seemed a bit too flashy for me, but I'm sure it will be possible to turn them down!
  • That was honestly imo intrepid's peak point. I wasn't expecting their action combat to look anything like that. Just amazing!

I do agree to an extent, there was A LOT going on. It seemed fine in the 1v1 scenarios that they showed. I could see there being a ton of screen clutter in a large scale raid style pve or pvp though.
  • It looks better than I anticipated, to be honest. I was always of the opinion that the systems were the primary selling point for Ashes. However, if they continue to make improvements to the Combat as shown, we can look forward to great combat in the game.

As a backer, I am really happy with the progression thus far. Intrepid should be proud. They deserve all the praise they get.
  • I really like the change from the tab-targeting but I hope we wont be able to roll and jump too much, it would make it seem like warframe :3

    Yes, exactly! Fantasy Warframe!

I'm very impressed with what we've seen so far. I'm keeping in mind that this is a first iteration and will look different at launch but it's clear to see Intrepid are working hard!

I'm eager to hear the communities feedback and to watch how Intrepid respond. I love watching the development of Ashes and I can't wait to see how the community and Intrepid mould AoC into a final product :3
  • Anyone have thoughts on the weapon swapping?
  • I loved it. Especially the ranged weaponry with its little zoom in to help with aiming
  • The progress they made from what was shown in previews videos to this new combat presentation is just outstanding. We had some cool spells, dodge roll, weapon swap and overal nice action feel to the whole thing. Congratulations to the team!
  • As a former GW2 player the weapon swapping and dodge roll seems familiar.
My biggest issue with action combat however is the locked perspective/camera POV. (i typically play with my perspective way back...) I don't know if this will be possible anymore....
I am not sure how Intrepid intend to hybridise traditional tab targeting with action* combat. seems to be a one or the other choice if that still is even a thing.

the flashy effects need to be de-tuned. toned down/ customisable, the amount of clutter generated by more than 2 player situations will become seizure educing cluster fudge.

    Alpha jank is expected.

    was that wand wielding?

All in all impressive improvement, which will hopefully appease the action combat/BDOists

I have mixed feelings about action combat. but am willing to adapt.

Indeed, that was some avada kedavra fiesta over there. Voldemort would be proud!
  • I, too, an highly impressed with how far Ashes has come, since first pledging oh-so-long ago!  They've made excellent progress, and seem to still have their foot fully on the pedal, roaring forward.  Can't wait to see how they outdo themselves, as things progress.

For a first pass, the action combat was looking VERY nice, and I'm excited to see how it improves during these next 7 months, and how it's integrated with tab target combat.  The animations were stiff, unsurprisingly, but the game is in alpha, so it's understandable.

I may be in the minority, but I actaully like the flashy spell/skill effects.  Though, I understand the practical side of why it may bother some.  Hopefully, through feedback, Intrepid can find a way to keep the "cool factor" while not impeding enjoyable gameplay/performance with excessive visual clutter.  Best bet would be to have an option in the video options window, for players to scale effects according to personal taste.
  • As for the weapon swapping.. I can't say that I like the idea too much. I hope it limited. While it does allow for some skillful plays it also quickly goes from "optional" to "mandatory" when trying to optimize. Too much of it gets pretty silly, pretty quickly. Especially in a game where anyone can use any weapon.

From a PvP perspective I see a scenario in which everyone has to carry a shield and weapon swap to it whenever focused.
  • I love the weapon swapping! It gives players the opportunity to create combos during a fight, like in the old Runescape days going from a bow to a 2h sword combo or switching to a dds for a special attack.
  • The sword animations were my favorite. Seems there are a lot of explosions and flashing lights with wands and bows as well. Alpha 1 will determine how hundreds or thousands of those light animations can propel on one screen at the same time.
  • Could not be more excited after seeing this stream!
  • The melee was my favourite part too. Although blink did look cool. Can't wait for Alpha1.
  • Loved it! Can't believe that was alpha combat because it looked better than some fully released unmentionable mmo combat systems. :D
The ADS, the weapon/spell sounds and graphics looked awesome. The combat looked so fluid too. My hype is at an all time high, good stuff!
  • Not sure what to think about it yet. Full on action combat in an MMO with a huge amount of players an latency can be really bad. This footage looks more like small scale battleground centric combat.

    It does look good though.

I'm also getting more and more worried that the game is heavily PvP focused and PvE is being left behind. How do you make this combat interesting and not spammy in a raid setting?
  • I liked it very much. And I kind of like the clutter too. I don't like being killed by a tiny dot on the horizon. The clutter makes people move in closer. I was just about to ask for smoke bombs but when I try to imagine 100 people fighting... lol, I'd like to see that before I poo poo it. It might be amazing, or it might look like bombs going off in a washing machine. From what I saw today I'm betting on amazing.
  • The weapon swapping was great though I hope there will be limits on it so we can't carry every weapon type around and juggle it :3
  • I am hoping they restrict weapon swapping to one melee weapon (which could be just a single hand weapon, dual wielding, two-handed, or one-hand and shield) and one ranged weapon and they have to be already equipped prior to combat.

Good question. I think it will add a lot to combat. The ability to swop weapons worked well in games such as Elder Scrolls Online.
  • Well It was far better than I was expecting.  I love the big particle effects.  Awesome spells should look awesome.  However I agree there should be an option to turn them down during large scale battles.

This seems like a really good way to do it. This concept has my support.

I understand your concern but there's plenty of MMO's out there that are PvE heavy and IS will never keep up with the PvE progress of some guilds so they need to get their PvP right to keep folks here which is what so many MMO's have done poorly over the last 10 years. PvP is a central pillar for this game and they need to get it right off the bat or Ashes will be in trouble. I'm confident that IS will address the PvE concerns but it's a question of priorities at this point and we need to be patient. Remember, PvE has been done well in recent MMO's, the platform is there. PvP? Not so much.
  • Weapon swap and dodge roll are almost a must for me after ESO and GW2, so I cannot be happier to see them appearing. :)
