Steven, please don't let young or new gamers influence this decision, thanks! I like the book, it takes us back to games like Everquest and Ultima Online.......not Fortnite....
This statement is so full of shit it's sad....young or old makes no difference it's just opinion.

It doesn't matter if young or old. There are trends which should be followed in order for a title to be up to date and successful.

There is a reason why all the old school nostalgia MMOs have failed. People move on, and so do trends.

It is nice that Intrepid Studios want to maintain a old school vibe, but also follow current trends and improve the game.

Indeed. AoC is gearing up to be the best of both worlds. By modernising some of the core gameplay mechanics it will draw new players to the genre we all love, while also helping the current player base adapt by keeping things fresh and evolving. Lets face it, the reason the mmo genre is dieing is lack of insperation and gamplay that has become tedious.

Aside from the obvious greed and p2w 😂
  • I think the greatest part of this whole argument is that we're heatedly debating the proper way for a wizard to cast magic.

Seriously guys. Wizards and magic? It's fantasy. Fantasy. This is all made up. If the devs tell us that wizards actually don't cast spells, but instead do naked ritual dances to invoke the favor of the local rock, tree and cloud spirits to do magic for them, who are we to argue? It's a made up world, and we're debating the minutia of what makes spellcasting legitimate.

  • Fortnite lawl.... can't even compare that to this ... Garbo game IMO..

The REAL Fortnite STW was great, until people (BR fags) started complaining that the game was too hard in canny and twine, so Epic lowered the difficulty in a recent patch . . . and me and my friends (who are considered whales having spent $3000+ each) have all quit. I know people that have only spent enough to get the main game and dont have as many schematics, heroes, and survivors as we did and thought the game was too easy still. The game will die now and I don't care anymore. I got 1000+ hours out of that game and spent close to $4000, so I payed them about $4 for every hour I played. That is still better than going to a movie theater and spend $15 on a ticket for a 2 hour movie :P
  • in Ashes we can see Mages holding books in their right hand while casting. This reminds me so much of Fortnite- the game I hate. Wouldn't it be better if mages had some kind of magic orbiting their hands instead of holding this book (like in Black Desert Online, for example)? That's my honest opinion. Cheers!

There will be orbs as well.  Who knows what the difference between the 2 will be(stat wise).  But that would be like the wizard/witch in BDO.

  • An idea could be:

Book - More wisdom, better for healing/buffs
Orb - More intelligence, better DPS

That's an interesting idea. maybe books/Grimoire will have more skill for classes like the summoner while the orb may be better for a full mage

the current player base for both is far lower than most MMOs on the market. Like FliP said there always has and always will be trends in gaming but holding on to the past only stops progress to better things.

You did not understand my post.

Ultima Online and Everquest were games from late 90' and early 2000's.

Any attempts to recreate such games in the modern market have failed. Those games themselves were very successful back in the day, but do not work anymore in todays market and trends.

You are a correct I mean Pac man was one of the best selling games of all time but now it's an arcade classic and not mainstream. Classic will always hold a place for the people who played them but they are not what people are looking for as gamers
  • And you have to remember nostalgia is a powerful drug. If women remembered the pain of childbirth clearly, population would have dropped or died out long ago. People remember the good feelings they have associated with an experience and forget the bad. This is why you see every single game out there that is struggling, gone out of business, or failed long ago trying to come back with "classic" or "vanilla" servers. You see games being billed as "retro" in an attempt to pass off bad graphics, design, and just piss poor gameplay. And most if not all are failing. People sub, or buy the game, then realize that while they had fond memories from 20 years(or less) ago, the reason why technology advances is because those were buggy, pieces of shit, with lackluster controls, quality of life issues, and non-existent balance prone to exploiting. We even see this here with Ashes where Steven is often quoted as his main motivation in creating Ashes is to recapture those fuzzy feelings he got when younger. I think where Ashes will be different is not going back and creating a clone of the games he played years ago, but taking all the best systems from those games, changing them, and using the latest technology to make it look shiny.
  • All spell casting sequences should begin by spitting, making the sign of the cross, and a crotch grab.

Why can I see a knight doing that ^^

I understand what you mean - its one of the things that really messes with my brain, i hate it ... but i really think its solely based on the Camera angle

i.e. Camera angle give vibes from WarFrame and/or Fortnite ... but ....
    • whats shown in Alpha 1 Phase 1 is NOT final i.e. Testing Phases
    • Alpha 1 Phase 1 is solely PvP
    • Maybe its trying to mirror the " trend " purposely trying to attract more players
    • Fortnite is trash
So whatever, I'll just hold off my full opinion until after i login for the 1st time
Yeah, WarFrame is another game i don't want AoC to resemble. If only combat in Ashes turns out to be as good as in Black Desert... I really want this game to be awesome
  • **Quietly steps through the conversation having never played Fortnite, WarFrame, or BDO**
All I can add is that I do not mind the spellbook... Though I am not a super fan of the over-the-shoulder camera angle. I believe they implemented the shoulder-cam way back in Galaxies and I turned it off. It's been a long time so I guess I could give it another shot.
