I registered a long time ago. I recently came back to check on the status of the game and decided to use the forums. The system to transfer my username and password from the main site is trash. It wouldn't let me use my username and while attempting to get it to work, it made my username my email. This was completely unwanted. Please explain how to update my username.

As stated correctly by @Shunex, all account level settings are handled via the CS team. A support ticket maybe created as such via the following - https://forums.ashesofcreation.com/discussion/37708/how-to-submit-a-support-ticket#latest .
