Equipment drops upon death (PVP)

Greetings all!

So like most of you here,  I'm pretty damn excited and hopeful for this new MMORPG, particularly the PVP.

I was wondering on the community's' take on dropping their equipment upon death in PVP, like in Runescape/Runes of magic/etc.

Frankly to me, that was what made PVP so fun and thrilling due to the fact that it was such a high risk/high reward kinda thing.

Do you think it would be sensible to have that in AOC? maybe instead of having people risk dropping their items anywhere on open world, have it in like a stakes arena so it could be more friendlier toward PVE players?

  • I want punishment and fear......take my gear, take my items.....hell, take my experience and make me lose a level....mmmmmm.....
  • Should be in pve also
  • There is already a system in place. People drop varying percentages of gathered materials depending on their flagging state on death. The only time gear drops is when a person dies while corrupted at a high enough corruption value. The exact percentages and the threshold of corruption before gear drop begins will be tested next year. Till then we only have what they have stated as their plan. Here is an interview where Steven talks about his vision for the corruption system working. Alternatively any of the wikis PVP sections also explain this.

So many games do this system wrong, and it kills games. Albion Online? Lost nearly half it's Population when they added an annoying reputation system that prevented people from occasionally going to PvP and forced people into a hard-core environment. IMO, the best way to go about something like this is to compromise. Make loot-dropping a thing, yes, but make it for the corrupt players and for people in higher-end/dangerous areas, if that. You want people to have a decent amount of casual open-world PvP, because that's how people develop a taste for it, and test things, and blow off steam and sooo many more things.

My old guild and I would go from the bottom of the continent to the very top, killing every single person we saw. Fifty of us! just running around being jerks, it was hilarious. However, we were then matched by enemy guilds trying to shut us down, so it was our guild versus 4-5 other massive guilds who decimated us, but it was a ton of fun. Nobody lost anything, nobody had to waste 15 minutes to go re-gear. It was just rez and fight for a few hours and it wasn't like it wasn't helpful for the community, we got tons of PM's from players wanting to join and tons of guilds that swore to always end our rampage (bit of RP, but was still fun).

If you take away casual world PvP, you will hurt your player-base. Remember, not everyone has the time to cater to a strict rep system, and not everyone has the time to gather hordes of gear to make up for their blood lust. People thrive from open world interactions. WoW, TERA, BDO, Runescape, Mortal Online. When these MMo's were good, they were at their peak, but you know what killed them? Getting rid of open world- fun.

Well regardless there already is a system planned for drops upon death, gear will only drop from corrupted players but materials on person drop from combatants and non-combatants, just read @UnknownSystemError comment.

Equipment drops should add that much needed frisson of danger and realism, but I'd still love for there to be an half decent hiring board / system, allow pve players such as myself to fairly pay someone to escort me safely fom A to B.

I’m guessing the other 5% are things Intrepid has changed their mind about and hasn’t talked about publicly yet...

So many people I know have already ruled this game out because of this one mechanic.  They will be forced to PvP, and they will lose some of their crap for dying.  That is the single worst thing a game can have if it wants to gather a large player base.  Too many different types of players to have a system like that.
  •
It's not the system itself that is bad. It's almost necessary in open world PvP games today, the issue is that it's 100% of the time.
That's where you're losing people. you know happens then? Zergs. Is that seriously something that creators don't think happens anymore? It does. it does in any game where mass group PvP is viable. You HAVE to have a system so people can get online when none of their friends or on to do solo content in wait. Making every ounce of the world 'full drop' PvP is not a good idea, and it will make them lose a good percentage of people who work a 9-5 or have families or that are just wusses (which make up the majority of crafters)

  • And yet they have time and again outlined their mechanics for combating zergs. No fast travel, no instant local respawns, player and spell collision, and others. If you think that you are going to be able to stack 20 people on top of each other and spam "ring of fire" or similar aoe effect you are in for a surprise. I get that people show up with concerns from other mmos that have dropped the ball in the past, but all you can do is grab tightly onto those pearls and take them at their word that they have a handle on it. Here are a couple Discord quotes to start you on your information journey. I recommend one of the wikis, and while there are close to 50-60 hours of livestreams/interviews to go through with answers about systems and mechanics, if you do a couple a day you should be caught up in around a month.

  • There are many reasons why many people will not play this game, so lets not cater to them. The game is in Alpha and they have already decided to not play it, good for them, lets move on.

Corrupted players dropping gear is meant as a deterrent to gaining corruption, not PvP. As for PvE players that are caught in the occasional PvP battle, yes they too lose some materials upon death, but not gear.

If you don't want to drop gear, don't gain corruption.
If you don't ever want to lose a resource, this game might be a bit harsh for you.

Everyone else will have a great time within the boundaries of the game and the rules.

Let me walk you to the door..... Now leave, and have a good night.....

The system is a compromise... Its an MMO where war is being faught and cities fall everyone has to have skin in the game you dont like it, then let me walk you to the door.
  • As far as I understand this is a similar system to L2 (lineage 2).

Lineage 2 had a very harsh system when it first hit NA which I would agree made it a game breaker for some people

But later L2 introduced a moderated system for which this sounds very similar to

It was a reasonable system allowing pvp but creating heavy penalties for those that went a little too far in griefing.
  • I will playing on a pve realm if available, being ganked isn't fun.
If people lose gear when being ganked, it will cause grieving.
Means they must make sure players cant just annoy people constantly.
If they do allow looted bodies it wont be long, people will hate it.
I'd be happy to lose some gold if I'm killed, but nothing more.
MMOs are for life if they're made right and people don't want to be grieved for life.

There are no separate servers for pvp or pve, they are all pvx and this will not be changing.

If people lose gear when being ganked, it will cause grieving.
People who die while "green" or "purple" never lose gear or items. They may lose a percentage of gathered/consumable goods based on flagging state at death. The only state that you lose gear at is "red" after having "ganked" multiple "greens" yourself, which you damn well knew was coming.

Means they must make sure players cant just annoy people constantly.
There are tools in game for reporting harassment that have been available in other mmos, including blocking/ignore of chat and a ticketing system to report individuals for various in game "annoying" actions. Think of the WoW hunter whistle on a macro at the bank if you need an example.

If they do allow looted bodies it wont be long, people will hate it.
People may indeed hate that they lose a percentage of gathered/consumable goods and they will be free to move on to other titles that may fit their needs. Intrepid has been very clear since inception of what kind of game they were going to make for the mmo. Those that invest time or money without doing the appropriate research as to whether there are systems they may dislike during play have other life issues they need to look at before clicking Install.

I'd be happy to lose some gold if I'm killed, but nothing more.
Currency is never lootable and has no weight in game. We have multiple statements to this effect.

MMOs are for life if they're made right and people don't want to be grieved for life.
MMOs are indeed long term investments of time and money by people. Just like any investment made in the real world, those that fail to do the research into where they are spending their assets are doomed to failure and a lack of self worth. This causes them to lash out through undeserved feelings of entitlement.
They have promised tools to deal with harassment and targeted behavior, use them.

As a final note, they have announced at the time of this writing that they have filled the Community Manager job after a long period of that position being vacant. If they made the right choice, that person will have the tools to soothe jagged nerves that some seem to have at the prospect of various decisions made by Intrepid.

  • @UnknownSystemError goes and smacks @Grimseethe down yet again with the book of facts. LMAO I love seeing you do this dude, just a barrel of laughs.

I research games I enjoy, this game hasn't shown me much I like so far.
If you have an issue with me then that's your beef kid, I only ever say truths and what I feel.

Hahaha "Yet again"....umm child, beside just then, when have I ever been wrong.
    I give facts and logic.
beside the pve realms I was right about how people will hate losing items and being ganked constantly.
The community is the worse thing in this game so far, you all gang up on people who have different views, or tells you truths you don't want to hear.

If this game has not shown you much of what you like, why are you still on these forums? Most of your posts are just spreading negativity, more often than not stating "facts" that have already been dismissed by Intrepid Studios. You also seem to think that your opinions are somehow superior than those of others. Then when people challenge your opinions you quickly resort to cheap insults such as "kid".

Now I am not asking you to stop stating your opinions, you are free to do so, but please learn to treat other individuals with respect. At least try to have a constructive discussion without blowing a fuse and start throwing insults left and right.

    I don't dismiss ideas unless they're flawed.
my opinions and ideas are usually a cut above the rest, I cant pretend to be modest.
I don't spread negativity I say what will improve a game and people get mad.
Having logic and foresight is a curse if no one around you can comprehend it.
  • Subjective opinions never win vs objective observations. Grimseethe please come play with us regardless. The community I have seen will have PvP addicts to defend their PvE allies as their route to expanding their nodes. Gatherers and other PvE play styles will be essential to advancing a PvP players game.
  • Honestly @Grimseethe you are something akin to comic relief at this point.

Nothing I say is wrong though.
People don't want to lose items when they die, they don't want to be ganked all the time.
Steps will obviously be taken to avoid this and in time it will fade in obscurity.
