Music is important.

Any good game is better if has a very good music. I would like to know more about what soundtracks are you going to use for the city's or dungeons (for example).

Imagine enter in a dungeon and the first thing you feel is a feeling of creepiness fear for the music that sounds and makes it clear to you that you are in a dangerous place.

An example:

Bear is doing the music. Not much is known beyond that.
Also is early in the morning here on a Sunday.

Most people never listen. They are just waiting on you to quit making noise so they can.

Bear has won an Emmy and was nominated for another for television soundtracks, so expectations should be high. He also did the music for the game God of War and won a BAFTA for that.

    Bear is great. BSG!
I plan on listening to what he puts in AOC, but music is in no way important to me in MMOs.
The key reason is that when you are spending hundreds to thousands of hour on the same game. The entire OST will quickly become over played.

For an above average OST like FFXIV, I will generally listen to the BGM once or twice per boss, and while I am leveling in a new zone for a while. From there I only toggle the BGM on when I have not heard it in a while.

For a shit tier OST like WOW, I try to check out the BGM when I go into a new dungeon or area, but that games music is what I would call "Ambient Tier", and personally I want zero part in it. WOW is musically like La Croix to me.

All other times, I keel the games sound effects mixed to a reasonable level, and 100% mute voice acting. With my own bangers playing in background.

This is my personal feedback, shared to help the game thrive in its niche.

Not dead at all. Just the majority of the active user base is usually chatting in discord most of the time.

But yes, music is very important. There are MMO's I played over a decade ago and will still recognize their music being used in videos, and will even listen to them every once in a while. Sound tracks alone can bring me back to a game, because the sound tracks will remind me of the fun I had in the games while those songs just happen to be playing.

I do agree, music gets boring. But it needs to be special.
IMO Fallout 2 did it great. It's just "background noise". If you have no idea, listen some of this:

    https://youtu.be/vGyB093QOIo?t=174

I don't get tired of hearing that, despite having played Fallout a lot of time. It's a mood piece, making you feel like you should in that area of the map according to the lore.

I'd rathe have that than complicated soundtracks that after hearing 20 times you just can't do it anymore.

Fallout has the "Ambient Tier" I was talking about. Which is great for a game that is 5-40 hours long. If game is going to take less than 40 hours of my time, I will surely listen to the music. I know you can play fallout for much longer than 40 hours, but I don't think anyone on this board is planning on playing less that 40 hours of AOC.

I will say this, I have put on both the Fallout and Morrowind OSTs for other games, because I thought they fit the mood better than the games own music. I was raiding Castle Nathria in WOW this weekend with the SOTN OST, and it really elevated the experience.

In the context of other MMOs:

This music is fine but, to me it all blends together. I could hear all of it or none of it and not feel much of a difference:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oA83X9AeEH4&t=19081s&ab_channel=WarcraftMusicandGaming

This however is more of a ride. It's not all amazing, but it keeps me interested enough to keep it on longer:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTlbyBg3PeI&list=PLKzg0DeoAjD_jS457C_6Af4XyHayGN5we&ab_channel=dudewhereismyspoon

Lastly, If my dude Bear McCreary makes AOC's music anything like this. It might keep my attention longer than 40 hours:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJiqwdWOhz8&ab_channel=JediNg135

I guess the key take away is that if the games music is not great or I have just heard enough of it. I will switch to something I do like really quickly.

I never got bored of the Guild Wars music. I could still listen to it now, even when I'm not playing it any more. Bear McCreary might be good, but Jeremy Soule is Number 1!

And yeah while the music is placeholder, the sentiment behind is correct.

I hope the game has great music. Something like FFXIV has a lot of good and memorable ones.

I think that music is extremely important in a game, especially in an MMORPG. Thinking back to MMORPG's I have played in the past, many of the memories I have of different places & experiences are rather vivid specifically because the music in those places/scenarios was brilliant.

One such example from my experience is the Town of Dion in Lineage 2. I remember spending a lot of time there with guildies chatting and messing around. What made those times stick in my memory was the great town music which just made for an amazing atmosphere.

I really do hope that AoC will have brilliant music which fits the different environments and scenarios that can happen in the world.

    Asmon also called this:

"Cellar Dweller Music", Which is fair...
Still It would be cool to watch him die in Savage.

@Nelirya Yes, I also loved Dion for the music, the design, its location, and lots of other reasons. Including meeting my best friend in the game there. She overheard me berating a player begging for Adena.

I agree that music is important. When you do exploring, dungeons, bosses etc.
I think Intrepid Studios knows well what music they want to use for the different content.

In this video from Ashes Of Creation ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHTWhIF5cqI ) at (1:57) there is a boss fight and the music that is playing while you fighting the monster is AWASOME!
I think music like that fits well into boss fights, and when you add "braking/destroying" sounds (2:03 in video) and monsters "voice" (2:07 in video) and the sound of the fighters and casters spell att the same time gives players an Epic feeling :p

The music in general Intrepid has for this game with pianos, sounds lovely and relaxing.
And the boss fight music they have for this video fits really well into this game.

Liberators - Epic Score (Spotify) is a song thats i think fits in Ashes of creation when fighting a boss.
The start of the song do NOT fit in Ashes of creation but at 0:51 until 1:40, that... that is EPIC!

If me and my friends are fighting a battle Pve/pvp (example Battlegrounds/city sieges/World boss/Dungeon Boss) and i hear music like this...I cant describe how awasome the feeling i get is.. its all from exitement, goosebumps and heart beating abit faster. Thats the best feeling when playing and MMORPG in my opinion. :p

This Ashes of creation video that i linked at the top, at the begining of it when the Mage walks/run in the city and outside the gates into the forest i think this music ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXyH27S_y24 ) fits well.

In general the song fits well when you are questing in a cosy place ^^

And i know that every person likes different music. So my liking in battle boss songs might someone else hate :D

  • I think leaving the option open to use custom music can never hurt. It shouldn't be too hard to make music the only moddable option in game. That way you can replace tracks you don't like.
