AOE Looting

AsgerrAsgerr Member, Alpha Two
So I was going over the wiki to find some quotes for a different thread and came across this:

AoE looting
  • AoE (Area of effect) looting is not included in the looting mechanics at the time of writing. It may be added based on feedback

If I'm not mistaken this refers to the ability of clicking on a single mob to loot all the other X mobs that you've also slain in that localized area.

Seeing as I haven't seen any thread on this, and the wiki talks about requiring feedback, why not discuss it as we wait for the people playing the Alpha to experience it?

I'm all for area loot. I would love a system where by the pets can loot like in BDO but that would be a stretch. If I can area loot from my toon the efficiency is greatly increased. If the loot remains until it is claimed I won't see much of an issue though. The biggest bugbear is when the loot disappears if its not collected quick enough. As a grinder, I love area loot.

all looting should be auto by default

That is what I would take it to mean.

This is my personal feedback, shared to help the game thrive in its niche.

+ 1 for aoe auto loot. Hell I would be fine with Final Fantasy 14s version of looting mobs, where it just gives you the loot. There's no real reason for there being a loot animation aside from realism, its not like someone else can come up and loot your kills so you may as well just get it automatically. This is of course aside from skinning and other activities that give you extra resources from mobs.

I do like aoe looting but I really want a class with a good rotation for single target looting per second /s

I prefer a looting animation that will loot all of the lootable containers in the immediate area. I still want to be forced to open up the body/bag but if they can prevent the requirement for looting each one individually, that would be sexy.

Yup, same as many have said. I prefer the ability to either AOE loot or auto-loot. There's always that one moment when you're trying to click on a dead body, but another dead body is too close so you just keep click on it and want to scream and say "No you fool! The deer carcass with the 3 gold coins inside it!"

I think I'd prefer AOE loot over auto-loot however, simply to be able to see what you're getting and notice how full your bag is getting. Plus it makes it less...robotic? Auto loot gets me in the "shoot kill shoot kill" mindlessness where you don't have to think about what you're doing at all.

Single looting is kind of...tedious...for no real reason
Harvesting skins or whatever would have to be single loot. But things like picking up 2 copper on 6 different bodies...I can forsake immersion/reality for the sake of convenience.
  • I'd prefer the ability to aoe loot or even auto-loot too. Having to right click on everything you've slain gets tedious quickly.

If you are going to have AoE loot, might as well go with auto loot as it basically turns into the same thing. Only issue there is if these mobs have trash loot that takes up inventory space and is not worth taking to the vendor or has no real value for crafting. Then you are stuck micro managing your inventory filled with trash.

I'm a huge fan of the WoW Classic loot style and would have zero complaints if they mirrored it. That means no AoE loot, you have to go up to the monster you killed and interact with it to loot it. They also often have junk that purely exists to be vendored. It all contributes to this feeling that I really have to prepare before I go out hunting. I want to prepare consumables, but the more consumables I take, the less loot I return with. It's a pretty nice give & take.

These are all things that other players might find annoying and unnecessary, but ultimately a certain level of annoyance benefits the rest of the system.

As long as killing 20 mobs in 10 seconds, doesn't take me 30 seconds to loot I'm happy :)
I wish I were deep and tragic

Would be nice to have a loot filter to say don't auto loot common items or specific types like trash loot

  • I actually prefer manually looting each corpse (with an auto-loot option), classic WoW style. The problem with auto-looting like in FF14 for me is that it removes the feeling of anticipation before looting. Manually looting and seeing a window pop up with the items you got is like opening a treasure chest. It becomes especially more meaningful for raid bosses or if you're grinding a specific area for hours for a certain item. If the item just shows up in your inventory it kind of removes that for me.
  • >> feeling

How about this: Auto-loot, but have a little temporary pop-up window letting you know what you've got? especially when you've got a rare+ item (instead of just boringly listing them in the logs)

How about allow both options and give the individual player the choice of which one they want to play with. Just put it in Options and if a player wants auto-loot they check the box.

I’m good with either area or auto looting. I don’t want to have to click on each body to retrieve.

Give the option to auto-loot through the settings. As well as AoE looting. Auto-looting is nice, but not everyone wants to loot junk that doesn't sell well, and now has to be discarded if not by a vendor when bags are full. People LOVE options!

+1 for AOE auto loot with filter options.

Same view as me, the more options the game gives us the better

The dead do not squabble as this land’s rulers do. The dead have no desires, petty jealousies or ambitions. A world of the dead is a world at peace
  • Since the inclusion of this kind of thing won't ruin other systems in the game. I don't really care either way. I'd kind of prefer no aoe loot to decentivize aoe farming. However, it probably would do nothing to it if it's possible anyway.

I would like options to influence color of Loot though so I can look at the colors I want than ones preselected. I don't really like the rarity colors WoW chose to be the base since it's inception since I played Diablo for so long before it. xD

I'd like any level of customization for it since it just makes the system more pleasant for the user.

There might be content where AoE looting would need to be turned off though to encourage fair looting potential. Like in dungeons or raids.

Just have your party's Bard do all the looting, it's not like they need much attention to play their AoE songs :D
They could even give Bards a separate skill for small AoE looting, wouldn't that be grand!

Wow's system works well with loot.

Its AOE loot to a certain radius, which turned out to be better than before when it was just single corpse looting.

You have the option to turn on auto loot and to make loot window appear at cursor.

Holding the set modifier hotkey (like Shift) when you loot then overrides auto loot.

I would just like loot drops to be rare (no junk, everything has value) that way when something does drop it’s not sure a chore to go get it. Games where every other mob drops loot get sooooooo tiring.

    Good point.

This got me thinking that the looting system is indicative of what kind of combat you want to encourage. If you want players to keep fighting non-stop, you give them a looting system that automatically injects items into their inventory. If you want every battle to be significant, then you give them a looting mechanic that makes each individual kill feel rewarding.

AOE loot should be an option if not standard, old ways on a lot of things are better but it's a waste of time. As much traveling that's talked about there's plenty of time to sort there. And a lack of it does not decentivize aoe farming as it's already a faster way to farm and grind having bodies grouped up.

Yea WoWs current system on this is perfect.
  • Ideally, for farmig, you want to put player on a zen state cycle of killing and looting.
I don't mind auto-loot or aoe loot, but I would like having a hotkey modifier for when I want to be more mindful about what I'm looting. Having control is great.

No to auto loot. Takes away potential for pvp.
  • AOE looting is one of basic things every game of this type have (or should have). Its like asking players to make a feedback if u want to use mouse to play this game.

There is that. Player corpses should not be able to be aoe auto-looted. But as an exception, IMO. I get you are probably saying it to mean people having to stop to manually loot provides opportunity to gank, but I am fine without that
