[Suggestion] Naming Days after Gods, and Months after Historical Characters

Hello Everyfriend,

If a week on Verra also has 7 Days, we could name them after The Seven (Gods).

It would make sense for The Others (The Banished Gods) to not have their own days, because the common folk might have been taught from a young age that there are only The Seven.

The Months could be named after famous Historical Characters within Ashes of Creation.

If that is something that could be done within Ashes of Creation, I believe this could potencially contribute to making this a slightly more immersive experience, for those who care about this, as it makes sense from a roleplay standpoint, right?

That is a point I had not considered.

Let me try some napkin math to see how much sense it could or could not make.

Assuming one earth week is one verra season.
Assuming 4 months per season, and 30 days per month. (120 days per season)
168 hours in a earth week divided by 120 days. A Verra day would be 1.4 hours.

Now lets look at node progression:
Expedition(A few Hours)=a few days.
Encampment(many hours)=many days.
Village(A few days)=weeks
Town(many days)=months
City(a few weeks)=a few seasons
Metro(many weeks)=a year, maybe less.

My hypothetical example would have people building from nothing to a metropolis in around a year game world time. Not that bad if magic is used in the construction. For the times to be super realistic you would want longer node progression times, but that might get in the way of fun game play. Still these numbers don't look awful to me.

Edit: Also with that math a day night cycle would be 84mins. Not sure how I would feel about a 42 minute night.

I think it would really only be meaningful if we're also tracking years.
And, again, that would make things feel very odd. How many years will go by in a 5 year period?
One month = 1 yr... so 60 years?
How many fictional years typically pass in 5 irl years of an MMORPG?

Yeah, I don't want to play a MMORPG where my character actually ages.

None, IMO.
In most MMOs you can still run old content as if it was current. So it is like time does and doesn't pass.

No matter how you slice this up. Something is not going to make sense.

Since the OP's suggestion is the use the names of the seven gods, the bulk of the work for this is already being done.

While the developers may not actually do anything at all with it at launch, it is the kind of thing that can be built on as content is added to the game. Even if they didn't use the names of the gods, the develoeprs could throw together some names now, and someone could add in a story behind that in the future.

This is all a part of world building in regards to a world that is being constantly expanded upon as it is also being used.

As far as I am concerned, a calander is as base a part of believable world building. I mean, most of our days of the week are all named after various gods - Wednesday being named after Woden, Thursday being named after Thor etc.

It would be really weird if a game had a day of the week named after Tyr, Woden, Thor or Frigg (Tuesday through Friday), yet didn't have any reason for those names. Or if a day was named Saturday and the games world didn't have Saturn as a planet.

However, Sunday and monday are perfectly acceptable, being named after the sun and moon - I assume the games world will have one of each (though if the world has two or more moons, Monday may be a bit odd).

To me, this is one of those things that 99% of people can be completely ignorant of and it won't make a difference at all. However, there is that 1% of people that look in to things like this, and just having it there is enough - and this then gives developers in the future an interesting point to work off.

I meant in the sense of the overall story - each expansion story covers how many years?
EQ? WoW?
In 15 years of WoW, how many years passed for Jaina Proudmoore?

Part of me does think it would be cool to have a date stamp included for world firsts, but...
Again, that starts to feel odd if we track monarchs...many monarchs may only reign for a year or reign for a few years then be defeated for one year, then regain the Castle for a few years, then lose the Castle for a couple of years.

This feels like it could be neat for lore, but as was pointed out earlier, it'd kind of be hard to fit, with how fast the seasons are planning to be changed, in AoC.

Yours truly could go either way, on it. The more lore and in-game references that exist, the better - but it would have to be ergonomic to the rest of the fittings of the game.

They could have unique festivals in-game based around the gods and lore going off @Nagash 's Nagashmas comment.

Wouldn't make sense lore wise for world of Verra to celebrate Christmas. Could be unique cosmetics to unlock and purchase at the shop.

Love the idea, the more sandbox elements to integrate player into the greater outcomes one way or another only increases the experience and engagement!

Are you referring to the actual cycle of days in Verra or just renaming our calendar in game?

example:

As midnight hits in the game it will display the day of the week, month/season accordingly

or

Open our calendar and it will say whatever day and in brackets the actual day of the week accordingly with months etc.

I was thinking the same but just was not sure on the vague OP description.
It would be quite appealing to see something pop up on the screen each day.

"Day whatever of whenever" just an idea.

Could be like " Festival of blank begins " " Season begins" lots of options

Seasons and holidays should be named after gods and legends for sure.
Might make sense for weeks to be named after them - especially since there is a mini-castle siege every week.

I would love to see how a Vek city celebrates the Winter holiday differently than a Ren'Kai city.

They could potentially have holidays similar to a Chinese calendar where it would be like:
"year of this god as festivals etc"

if there are seven gods? then that would be 7 months of different festivals in-game if every week is a different season.

That way each in-game year cycle would have a different theme in relation to a real world calendar. If they used the in-game time, it would be winter holidays and themes every 4 weeks, lol.

Perhaps they may just change some things based on real world calendar events. Very interesting though regardless of your original intent.

I think it would not be so mechanical that only seasons are named after gods and only holidays are named after legends. Humans tend to be more chaotic than that. Plus, we have 9 different cultures.
So, while everyone is experiencing the same seasons, different cultures might have different names for the same season. Very likely different cultures might have different names for the same holidays as well as different holidays.

Seems like each week of Castle Siege could be named after a god or legend and would follow a four-week cycle. It might be: Legend, Legend, Legend, God. Because that follows the weekly ramp-up of Castle-node caravan build-up which culminates in the fourth week Castle Siege.

There are 5 different Castles, so could be that each Castle has 3 Legends and one God associated with it, resulting in 15 Legends and 5 Gods associated with Castles. The Castles are originally occupied by Ancients, so could be the Legends are associated with Ancient lore and the Gods are associated with the patron God of each progenitor race, plus the Tulnar God.
Of course, lots of players might flip out if they were stuck with being the monarch of the Castle associated with the Tulnar.
Might want to have the calendar names associated with a Castle to be: Legend, Legend, Legend, Legend.
I suppose it could also be that it's: Legend, Legend, Legend, God of War.

I think celebrations for each irl day of the week is way too much.
Castle Siege is already on a 4 week cycle, so seems likely that all of the cultures might acknowledge that 4 week cycle. Also, seems likely that the devs might acknowledge some real world holidays in Ashes, although I hope they don't only stick with American/Christian holidays.
There might be a 12 "year" cycle similar to the Chinese Calendar that conforms with our months.
And, they might number those cycles. In the back of my mind that seems kinda similar to the Mayan Calendar from a Verran perspective. Or, maybe they name a real world year as an era, similar to The Depression or The Return.

Seems like there might be regional celebrations and holidays.
Seems like there might be Node-Type celebrations and holidays. And seems likely that each Node-Type might have a patron God.
Again, I would expect a Vek celebration of Winter to look very different from a Py'Rai celebration of Winter.
But, maybe Py'Rai don't celebrate Winter at all.
Plus we have to wonder if there are Sanctus holidays and celebrations that aren't related to life on Verra.
How do Ren'Kai worship Norlan differently than Vek? Do they have the exact same naming conventions for their calendars and holidays?

We'll have to see how deep the Ashes devs take us with the various regional and cultural differences.
