Is 75 bucks really worth paying for a game that is still not released?

I'm scouting this game for some time now and I'm interested if it will be ever released? Also is it really worth paying 75 bucks for a game right now, in this phase? Any experiences? Thanks in advance!

    Yes.

Technically it would be better to pay more, rather than less.

I'm assuming you have read the Wiki and know what types of game you like to play.

Basically, we don't know how long the Alpha-2 phase will last, so if you want to 'pass some time', make friends, etc, paying way more is probably better so that you can do that for the entire Alpha-2 phase (unless you really hate the occasional wipe of your progression).
Sorry, my native language is Erlang.

$75 doesn't get you access to the game yet, neither does $150, $250, or $375. There is no testing phase going on atm. The $75 testing phase is years away.

My typical advice in these situations is that if you have to ask yourself is it worth it, just wait and see what people are saying when test phases start. It doesn't cost you anything to wait other than time.

Alpha 1 was more fun than new world when it released.

Talents is right though, there's no current phase to play and if you wanted to play the next one its a 250 dollar purchase. Though it is meant to be the longest testing phase. (How long that is remains to be seen.)
The world is beautiful whenever you're here. And all the emptiness inside disappears.

You are not buying anything to seek value for your money.
    You pledge support.
    Get your facts straight
  • I see no reason to pay $75 for the game right now, no matter how much I believe in it's design.

When they finally have a date for Alpha-2, I will consider paying the $250 though. The main detail that interests me is A2 being playable until "near" release. I don't really want to play around in A2 for a while, then be shut out of the game for a year+ until release (aside from limited Betas)
  • I think its worth paying only for alpha 2 if you like how game looks. Paying 75 bucks will only give you like 4months game time. If you pay 250 it will give you about year and half or even 2 years, this is all speculation idk for sure.

Why speculate? It's explicitly stated on the store. https://ashesofcreation.com/shop

    Here's the $250 pack:
Our Voyager Pre-Order Pack will allow access to our persistent server Alpha Two test! This Pre-Order Pack includes (in total)

Access to future Alpha Two test phase
Access to future Beta One test phase
Access to future Beta Two test phase
6 months of game time ($90 Value)
$100 in Embers (in-game marketplace credits, NO P2W!)
Shroud of the Vigilant (Accessory Cosmetic Skin)
    Constrictan Coiler (Pet Cosmetic Skin)
    Veshan Komodo (Mount Cosmetic Skin)
In addition to the cosmetic items granted with the Voyager Pre-Order Pack at the time of purchase, you will also be entitled to purchase future monthly cosmetics as add-ons for the Voyager Level Pre-Order Pack and below. Pre-Order Pack cosmetics are only available during the month they are featured, and will never be available again for purchase.

In order to own a Pre-Order Pack’s cosmetics, you must either purchase the Pre-Order Pack during the month that the cosmetic is featured or have purchased that level pack or higher in a previous month in order to buy the cosmetic as an add-on. Kickstarter and Summer Backers will always be able to purchase Pre-Order Pack cosmetics as add-ons.

With respect to how much play time $250 buys you, I'm pretty sure the speculation part @VekoCrnogorac was referring to is how long A2 + B1 + B2 will run before launch. That info is not known, and thus, @VekoCrnogorac's 1.5-2 year estimate was speculation.

"People" said A1 would run for at least 6 months. They got a month. Don't make assumptions off of what "people" post. The only person that sets those terms is Intrepid. And they react as development needs.

No. Not in this phase, unless you REALLY want that green cloak that comes in the current package. Also, you're not buying the game really, just beta access and some gametime and that cosmetic. At release there is no cost to buying the game, only the subscription.

With that said, if you decide you want the cloak now and to support the game, you can always upgrade to a bigger package later on and they'll deduct the cost of your current package from it. So the $150 package upgrade would cost $75, for example. So if money is tight and you can't buy the big pack right away, you can upgrade your access in manageable bites whenever you have the money and there is a cosmetic in the new pack you like perhaps.

Lol, of course it's not worth it. But, if you're happy to push past that and support, you can help with testing when it becomes available.

Other than that, just sit back and wait until release.

  • I concider Star Citizen as a hoax but alteast with the cheapest ship (like 30 Dollars) you get access to all testings and the (final)game someday (maybe).

  • You aren't buying into a game. You are buying into a testing phase, and some cosmetics. I haven't looked at the shop in a while. Isn't it clear there?

Yep. While the latest word on A2 is that it will run through release (mostly), that word is from a long time ago. I won't spend $250 now and then it changes. I don't mind week-long downtime, them shutting down A2 during Betas, world/character wipes, etc. But I'm not really a cosmetics/fashion player. So that $100 of Embers is a waste to me. But really long term A2 access picks up the slack.

save 1 dollar a month and you will have the 75 by the time the game comes out :D

the 75 bucks is bar Beta2 acces you dont have to buy it. On realese it has no box cost
the beginning of wisdom is to know you know nothing
  • $75 for a preorder is definitely not worth it. If you are concerneced for value on the dollar, wait until beta testing begins and then make your decision then. if you are anti-preoder, you can just wait for full release and not pay any upfront-cost (besides monthly sub).

I totally get your concern about whether this game will ever be released or not. It's frustrating to wait for something you're excited about, but unfortunately, delays happen all the time in the gaming industry. As for whether it's worth paying $75 for it right now, that really depends on your personal preference and financial situation. If you have the funds to spare and you're confident that this game will be worth it, then go for it! But if you're unsure, maybe it's best to wait for some reviews or even a sale. Speaking of gaming and money, have you ever tried looking into games for money? I recently stumbled upon a blog that helps you find games where you can earn some extra cash. It's been pretty helpful for me, especially during these tough times. I think it's definitely worth checking out if you're interested.

My last experience in paying before the game is released was Star Citizen... :'(

Also, it's kinda crazy, look at Minecraft, lot's of people backed up that game, then the game became famous and the owner(s) sold the game for 2.5 bilions to Microsoft.... how much the backers earned? Zero.... literally zero

I don't back games anymore specifically because those two games, they can never be released or they get sold and I have no shares... NO SHARES!!!

Backing a game doesnt mean you are a shareholder in the game.

It literally means you are a customer.

In real life, you are closer to being an investor than a customer, since the product doesn't even exist

Game owners thank their backers how?
By stuffing all those milions/bilions into their own pockets IF the game comes out and flourishes.... other than this the backer is just someone who spent money and sometimes WAY MORE money than buying the game when it comes out (if comes out)

It's just stupid, what kind of client x provider relationship is that? LOL

Yeah, but a backer still isnt a shareholder.

It is still just a customer. It just happens to be one that made the decision to pay more than they needed to pay for the product.

I dont usually even look at who I am replying to, I just reply to stupid comments (other than in specific discussions that I am involved in), pointing out how stupid said comments were.

If you think I am in some way "stalking" you, the assumption I have to make is that I am replying to many of your posts.

Dont blame me for that, if you want me to stop replying to your posts, just stop posting stupid things.

  • If you're asking the question, the answer is probably a NO. I bought into Alpha 2 because I can, it gives me joy to anticipate and participate at this stage, and I believe in the project. It's still a possibility that it all crashes down and I've lost hundreds of dollars, so I don't recommend anyone buys in unless they have nothing to lose by doing so. But, for me, it's worth it.
