I consider myself pretty open minded and willing to see another persons point of view. I am also open to new challenges. So, while I am not a classic PvP player, I am willing to give things a shot.

That said, what game should I try out in order to get a good feel of what Ashes PvP will feel like? What recommendations do you have, current or past, live or private server, that does not cost too much to try out, that you believe gives me the best snapshot.

I did just sign up for AA Classic but do not yet have beta access.

Darkfall, Darkfall Unholy Wars, Asherons Call, TERA, Conqueror's Blade all had great PvP experiences.

That doesn't make them every ones cup of tea, I've had good PvP experiences in games I don't consider having amazing combat either, like WoW and ArcheAge.

I actually had a lot of fun with Warhammer Online pvp when it first came out.

    Example (Not my video)
    Large Battle

Sorry, couldn't find any of the small group pvp I was more interested in. It was 14/15 years ago.

The best PvP experience my friends and I had was oddly from a mobile game; Lineage 2: Revolution. We've been waiting to find a game that comes close to the experience we had playing L2R but have had difficulties finding one since we all play on different platforms.

I am still blown away that a mobile game (although mostly played with an emulator on PC) had such an enjoyable MMORPG PvP experience.
Nothing odd about it. They just took L2, which had amazing pvp, and made it a mobile game.

In terms of piloting your character it seems like Guild Wars 2. From the little I played, I don't think guild wars PVP is good, but I don't think that means ashes will be bad. Overall I think it's too early to tell what would be similar, but if you're looking to practice mechanics, go run around in GW2, I'm sure something will transfer.

What aspect do you want to experiance? Ashes is going to have a multitude of different pvp layers.
Wow Classic probably emulates the pace of the game the best, Guildwars will emulate its hybrid system, and eve online is definatly a front runner for the risk vs reward feeling.

Ashes draws from many games, so, depending on what exactly you are looking for matters. Though no game will bethe same experiance.

i honestly feel like this is similar to so many home town stories of the young man inexperienced in love, who needs a nudging hand.

No one here has even mentioned how class design and combat roles make for good pvp. Id like to see:

    Initiators/counter initiators
    Heal block
Dps of all varieties (burst, single target, AoE, cleave, etc)
    Zone deniers
    Ccers
    Buffs/debuffs
    Scouts
    Pushers
    True anti stealth
    Damage mitigation
    Momentum/counter momentum

The fun for me in pvp comes from building a character and team to do a specific thing. I hope ashes looks at other genres and applies the design principals from them to their game.

L2 had pretty much all of the points on your list, so Ashes is already looking at a game that does that. I'm sure they'll take those design features from other games as well.

It's way too early to tell, the classes and skills are barreeeeely fleshed out. If you want to play some fun PvP then play the most successful MMO in terms of combat and PvP, WoW.

Other MMOs have different aspects to PvP, different scenarios, pacings, skills, class, ect. But WoW, like Asmongold has said, only ever stayed so popular because of it's combat, it's polish and fluidity, it's macros, the rework after Legion, hot damn that took WoWs combat over the top. Rest of the game was trashed at that point, but the combat remains legendary. Minus the homogenization of classes, so idk, maybe try WOTLK Classic WoW. Most people consider it the pinnacle.
