More Ashes Lore = More Ashes Hype

Back in 2009, I was introduced to SWTOR's Deceived cinematic trailer by G4's coverage of E3 at the age of ten. After that moment, I followed the game pretty religiously. Every Friday, there would be a development update. It would be an article or a video and they were always awesome. My favorite updates, however, were the Timeline videos that would give lore on the current era in which you were playing in SWTOR as well as additional eras to catch the player up to speed (Great Hyperspace War, Exar Kun War, Jedi Civil War, etc.) It was a great boon because it allowed you to get fully immersed in the universe before the game came out.

Right now, Ashes seems very focused on systems, which makes perfect sense and obviously takes priority over lore in regard to game development. However, I just think adding more lore updates would be a nice addition to the process. I know there is concern over spoiling the surprises of the universe, but that wasn't a problem for SWTOR, so it shouldn't be a problem here. Big reveals need not be shown, just something for us to chew on while we wait.

What do you all think? Thanks for reading.

It wasn't a problem for SWTOR because they already had a preestablished world. Any addition would just be "flavor".

AoC's lore will be told to us through the story itself, so any big lore dumps would be complete spoilers rn. And any basic lore for the game is already available on the wiki

Steven doesn't want to give up too much lore, because he wants us to experience it in the game itself.

Just because SWTOR had a preestablished world doesn't mean it wasn't completely distinctive from what most people know as Star Wars. Very few people outside of dedicated fans know anything about The Old Republic period and giving that context was incredibly helpful. I reject the assertion that it's flavor. I also reject the assertion that more recent lore equals spoilers. All the lore we have now are from events that occurred thousands of years ago.

If they don't want to give out lore details on more recent Verra, could they give out more information about Sanctus? That's where our characters are now. It would be nice to learn about what they've been up to living on a different planet just so we can understand our character motivation more. They don't need to tell us everything. Just what is relevant and reasonable.

I would LOVE more lore. For me it helps create a story in my head for my character before release. But also understand it may give away too much of the main story of game.

For sure. I'm just asking for more context. I don't want any surprises ruined.

Definitely. I think they could extend monthly dev update with 15min from a lore master talking about a specific area/location, or an enemy tribe you encounter etc. All without giving away spoilers.

The npcs in the game will supposedly be the first wave of explorers. So what if there's a storyline that tells us about our (and their) past?

Steven says he wants to save lore reveals for us to discover while playing the game.

So we're just flying blind. We don't really know where we came from. We will never see Sanctus in the game. I don't see the harm at all.

    Mostly flying blind.
We'll learn some lore from Alpha 2. And some lore from the Betas.

Intrepid has been clear they are keeping the lore under wraps for as long as they can, so…

Nice wiki drop! And this is the truth :) We really want to keep our lore cards close to our chest, so to speak :)

While it wouldn't be impossible to give lore drops more often; that might step on the toes of the awesome work our narrative and quest designers are doing to masterfully deliver the lore of Verra to you while you're playing Ashes of Creation! :)

Having listened to hundreds of hours of 40K lore on YouTube, I can certainly tell people that the "OMG I learned about the lore in game!" factor is almost completely meaningless. The lore can bring people to the game, and 99% of people will learn about the lore from YouTube anyway. Unless the devs intend to make most of the lore a mystery, there's countless parts of the lore that doesn't benefit by having it hidden behind some kill ten wolves quest.

We know basically nothing about the game or major legends of it. We literally don't even know all of the Gods names that all of our characters supposedly worship. Is that going to be a huge secret too? Lol

I agree here. You can still speak on lore without giving away main plot/story.

My pal, Ombwah, is on the Ashes dev team and excels at providing these kinds of lore dumps gor MMORPGs/MEOWs in development.

But... we're unlikely to change Steven's mind.
Doesn't hurt anything to ask for it, though.
And... if you never ask, the answer is always no.
