Has it been confirmed that animations are WIP?

Greetings!

I know that Steven always says that everything we see is a work in progress (WIP) and nothing is final, but has he or any developer confirmed if the animations, especially those of characters running or sprinting, are going to be changed? The stream the other day looked great, but when I saw characters with two-handed weapons running and sprinting, it seemed quite odd to me. Two-handed axes and maces shouldn't be held vertically, since they have long handles and can be held horizontally. Two-handed swords are a different matter. I think New World did a great job in terms of animations and they should take inspiration from it. I also noticed that the animation of NPCs like wolves and others seems quite unstable in terms of frames, they slide over the terrain and when they die they always jump to instantly die.

Cheers!

weapon stances for most games are always being critiqued as unrealistic, there are only so many animations available

well, everything is a work in progress and is subject to change :D that icnludes...everything, and that includes the animations and well...everything.

anyways art isnt about being realistic, its about being believable. look at picasso paintings. you cant see both eyes of someone if you are looking at the side of their face, but he made them that way. is that realistic? nope.

i thought it looked pretty cool how the dude with the 2 handed sword was holding it over his shoulder. he had this fk everything attitude.

NW animations are not the best.

    BDO is the standard.

(ignoring effects since people complain about that in all games and strictly talking about animations)

    Edit*

To add the weight and motion of BDO animations feel stronger and more natural movements like as if everything can flow together well. Where You see NW animations are all very stiff and lacking a element that just makes it not feel both fluid but also heroic. It is more like a generic attack that is lacking character.

It's not just here either. It's anywhere a game is "openly" development

The thing is the average consumer doesn't understand what the word alpha means in any form. They only understand beta and early access.

:D Everything really means everything in alpha development.

Once A2 starts a lot people will be able to dial in much more precisely on any issues with animations and come with specific feedback on stuff like that. It's very different compared to just watching it on video.

I'm sorry but I don't buy it. New World has done a pretty good job when it comes to animations, especially with running animations of players holding 2H weapons. The standard is there. If we start juggling dialectically with Picasso analogies and other stories, we are being conformist. It's not about being realistic or not, it's simply about looking good, being natural to the human eye. After all, the game simulates human beings in a medieval world, no matter how much fantasy there is.

Both are rather more finished and released than Ashes, too. Just be patient. It'll come. :)

It is annoying how many times Steven says "everything you see is a work in progress and will receive multiple polishing stages or reworks".

But then I see posts like this and realise why he says it.

Thanks for sharing that comparison. The BDO combat animation not only looks more believable, it also looks much more extraordinary than the NW animation. It appears they have accomplished something pretty remarkable there at BDO.

I don't remember any recent mentions specifically about animations, but I think we've seen progress as time goes by. Not between every single stream, but I do remember a recent stream where the first thing a lot of people in chat noticed was improved animations. So aside from the everything actually meaning everything, we've seen actual progress over the last year too.

As someone who also never had a real 100% Statement on the "Animations" (thinking only of Spells/Abilities) ever, i decided to keep silent for Months and "just assumed" ( :D ) that everything is still being permanently worked on.

From what I remember, New World Alpha was more close to a Sandbox PvP MMORPG. It was all about fighting other players pretty much wherever you went, and the game had this cool sandbox vibe where players were building and managing their own cities and outposts. Resource management and territory contest was a thing since you needed resources to build and develop the outpost. Also, there was PvP almost everywhere, but there were systems to punish ganking. In fact, it was a game much more close to what Ashes of Creation is going to be.
But then, feedback came rolling in and the devs at Amazon Game Studios decided to switch things up for the final release. They added more PvE content, like missions and a more structured storyline, so it's not just about battling it out with others anymore. The game became more accessible and appealing for PvE players.

It was a shame because it could have been a very cool PvP game and it ended to be the another generic theme-park

NW animations are not the best.

    BDO is the standard.

The point of the thead is not which MMO has the best combat/running animations, but if they are going to be improved. Maybe for you is BDO, maybe for me is NW, one or another, both options currently have better animations than AoC when it comes to running while holding certain weapons.

The point is NW is not good, I would not want a 2 handed sword running animation like that game, I had just pointed out the weak elements of it. AoC is already better than that when you are talking about the default run with a sword, you don't hold it like in NW lmao.

NW is BELOW the standard, so i see you recommending things not done well (again as i pointed out in my other post the weaker elements of it). For a survival game sure it can meet the standards but honestly older mmorpgs might have better animations than nw tbh, (I'd even say swtor is better which is a mmorpg release 10+ years ago)
  • Guys, the West needs to abandon its realistic video game aspirations, or simply make a symbiosis. It is true that certain video game genres, realism is incredible without a doubt, but the mmorpg or rpg genre are fantasy games, they require this fantasy dynamics, magic, big swords, incredible animations in the skills, etc.

This realism is incredible in games that are not mmorpg or rpg, for example GTA, RDR2, fps games, etc. Realism is one of the factors why mmorpgs have failed in my opinion.

    mmorpgs have not failed.
    Players play what they like.
They finish the content of mmorpgs faster than the game can add new content.
And the social aspect changes over time too and players are tempted to start playing something new.

We do not really need 100 servers.

i played it too. did you see how things were different than the final released game? .-.

It was a shame because it could have been a very cool PvP game and it ended to be the another generic theme-park

yeah i know, amazon listening to carebears ruined it. but my point is, the game changed xD..aoc is in pre-alpha. alpha1 wasnt a real alpha. a2 is the real alpha.

    Cheers!

The point is not what you say, especially when it’s me who has opened the thread and asked a question. That I have used NW as an example is irrelevant, when the point of the thread is whether they are going to improve the animations, especially those of running carrying two-handed weapons. But you fulfill the saying: point to the moon and stay looking at the finger. You have become obsessed with focusing the conversation on which MMO has better animations when that is not the central point of the discussion, and on top of that you have simply thrown that what seems to you is better when you have not even given weighty arguments. But since you say it, if you read well you would see that precisely the example that I use citing NW is with two-handed weapons that are not swords, but axes and maces, which have a handle long enough to carry them horizontally when running (if you don’t see it that way, I recommend you check your elemntary physics class and see why holding a heavy stick object is more easy to holdit orizontally than vertically, specially when you run), which is the most ergonomic posture, and in that NW complies, while in AoC you see a soldier sprinting with a two-handed mace vertically. This illustration visualizes it very well: https://www.myminifactory.com/es/object/3d-print-medieval-crusader-knight-running-with-great-axe-266808

So stop pulling ego to argue and say that what you like is the best because it is not. NW's animations are ABOVE of BDO, no matter how many CAPITALS you put.

I think the same. I think Alpha One was a barely functioning "Placeholder" for an actual Alpha,

and i absolutely mean no Offense to Intrepid when i write this. I have seen they tested the most basic things. It was truly EEAARLY in Development back then.

Alpha Two will be glorious in Comparison. The Game already came so far, compared to before.

  • To be fair to the OP, I've followed dozens of early access and open development projects over the years, and one of the things that almost never gets updated or improved past the initial implementation is animations. There might be a tweak here and there, but there's almost never a comprehensive overhaul that actually impacts the visual aesthetic.

The one exception I can think of is Planetside 2, where they overhauled their locomotion animations to have more weight and direction a year or so post-launch.

THIS. This is the reason for my main concern. I also followed several EAs and indie games and very rarely saw that the animations seen in the alphas are updated and improved. Perhaps where I have seen it has been in Star Citizen.

That is my main concern and the reason why I opened this thread.
