THAT example is just unrealistic, the filters to disallow that name would be so tight it would basically make players ask for a name generator feature. I'm sure some people on here will still demand something like that, but I don't think it serves us well to discuss things like that, let's stick to what Intrepid can actually do and leave the rest^^
My point is: Having NO restrictions on names would be too little, while the few restrictions given should be fairly clear to understand (no special symbols, no numbers, no cuss words). Am I excited of playing alongside someone calling himself "Captain Bratwurst"? Not as much as playing with someone who choose a more immersive name. But again - I think that this also works well within the lore of Ashes and provides an ingame RP-backdrop for "faction" based PvP.
What do I mean? >>> On one hand we have the "conservatives", characters trying to reintegrate with the world like it was in the past (because before the game began we probably did not have many or any whacky named people running around) and on the other side the "reinvented", characters who after their time in Sanctus decided that starting over in Verra should also be signified by choosing new names for their new lives and break with some of the traditions - including the names they choose.
I don't doubt that you are. The only thing I said was that Intrepid probably will decide their name policies based on the player accessibility (like age rating for market access) and the sentiment of those they probably identify as their core players, people who enjoyed L2 etc in the past - at no point did I say or try to say that because of this I would know which way Intrepid will lean with it's decision.^^
Might just be that most old school MMORPG gamers ultimately don't care too much about names and it also helps the game to allow somewhat whacky names because younger players need "ironic" names - the mentioning of what I see as core factors in Intrepids decision was made without any outcome dependence.
Again, the only thing I think would be conducive would be disallowing special symbols, numbers and cusswords. Nothing more nothing less and that all I am advocating for.
i mentioned taxi driver because the other dude mentioned it. again, why is one player preference( immersion / rp, etc) more important than the other? the other dude was advocating for people called taxidriver to be reported and forced a name change.
atfer reading your post, i can see that you are only advocating for special symbols, numbers and cusswords not to be allowed. that seems reasonable. but if i wanna name my character bob or taix i shouldnt be punished for it. these are normal worlds.
i dont think numbers should be forbidden either. what if i wanna be like crafter 1, crafter 2, etc on a 2nd account. or even during alpha, i might go with test123 so people dont steal my name on release, etc.
also, special symbols arent really an issue for the player, only for the programmers hahaha. the game is going to release in latin america as well and use accents. also the game is going to release in europe, and they use all these weird letters with all these weird accents, depending on their language, that are very common to them, but not to us. i can understand why they would be disallowed, to keep things simple (especially for the programmers), but thats probably the only valid point to dissalow them. technical reasons.
i can see how some players might have difficulties typing someones name if they use special characters, but you could just add them to your friendlist, or click them in the chat then select whisper, etc.
i wont comment on cusswords because they have no effect on me, but you have a valid point when you mentioned ratings and all that.
Hrm, I wonder if that's feasible. I mean, I am sure it's technically possible, but is it a good idea to allow people to change other people's nameplates? Obviously only for themselves, on their own client. I can see some upsides I suppose, but also some downsides.
The thing with number is just to retain a minimum of "immersion", a very light nudge towards maybe putting some effort into finding a name for the character. For account names I don't think such rules should apply, those are private anyways.
Regarding symbols: I think that "should" (apply terms losely) be part of the policy because it could make people able to avoid being blocked by others - by disguising their name with symbols that cannot be copied easily. I am german myself and I'd be perfectly fine with not using ä ö ü or ß (< that last one is supposed to be a special "s") for names. But what I meant with special symbols mainly meant things that really are far removed from regional context. e.g. the kanji sign that looks like a smiley is not necessary in Europe or America. And yes there could be japanese migrants etc etc, however let's remember here that the game is supposed to bring people a closer together again while gaming. Having people name themselves in ways that basically makes it impossible for the majority of player to refer to them is working against the social aspect of the game. I'm not saying disallowing is the "perfect" solution here, but I personally think that for the goal of social gaming it would make sense to not allow special symbols that have no proper known pronounciation in the servers' region.
Already thought of this as the final solution. Even if the danger to it will be that people always adress a player with a really annoying name like " Bigbootylover? Ah that guy I named Geralt on my character. Cause his character looked like the guy in Witcher. Damn I didn't knew who you were talking about for 8 minutes. "
We would need a system that lets you find players by name and it automatically shows if you have replaced their name with something else on first glance.
I'm of the opinion that no matter how hard it is though, that people should try to have a fantasy immersive name in a fantasy game.
I know someone who once gifted a Deathknight in WoW a filthy rare Item for free, out of generousity and to reward the players esthetic sense. The players Deathknight had a very lore respecting race & name combination which most Deathknights had not.
For knowers: He gifted him the [ Battered Hilt ] which starts a Questline to reforge a heroic sword of legends.
With a unique appearance and since you can also collect weapon appearances in the game with the later introduced transmog system. This was a very valueable affair.
One that would cost players that time 5 months of playtime in gold, in the auctionhouse.
People went NUTS he did it when he announced in the citywide tradechannel.
Called it FAKE and stuff and then the Deathknight himself thanked him closely afterwards in the same citywide channel and that is when sh°t really hit the fan!!!!
" What are you doing?! We are trying to make money here! "
" You can't just give someone THAT THING for free! Do you know how long we farm this to get one ourself just so that we can sell it in the Auctionhouse? "
" Are you crazy? You could have made so much gold with that! "
" You are ruining our business here! "
Well sometimes...
There are things worth more than money. And that is RESPECT for the gamingworld one plays in!
Pink haired twintail doning, female Gnome Deathknights.
Or Deathknights who's name is " Agotschigoo/Ulalalahui/Marschmellow/Fartfartington ".
Their very existence stained our eyes for long enough.
May they know what natural selection they have exposed themself to when they chose their form.
It is not about the gold. It is about the glory.
