Leveling system?

Hey guys, I'm new here (even if i have watched the game for a lot of time)! :)

I was wondering if there have been any discussions about the levelling system? It will be fast paced? Like a race to max level?

I think it's time to get back to hard levelling system, like World of Warcraft Vanilla had. Slow pace levelling makes more sense in a MMO genre since you need to explore a lot of things around you and grow at the same time with the world itself. Also, since the best gear we can get in Ashes of Creation, i suppose it makes even more sense for a slow paced levelling option.

There's a lot of people complaining about "no content" since most of them are rushing to max level and throwing negative videos (content creators)/comments and ideas, making the game look bad to others that never tried by themselves.

Hope you're all well!

Leveling is meant to be a relatively slower process than many games we see lately, supposedly around 270 hours to max level, though it isn't entirely clear if this is because you need to take time to finish quests (not for the exp) or get gear to keep being strong enough, or if this is all going to be just time spent either questing for exp or fighting for exp.

As @Azherae said - it is intended to be much slower. And maybe somewhat different to the themepark model - the content you have access to in the game, while it will increase as you level; what you do levelling will at least by the current design, be the kind of things you do at end game.

So while people will try to race to max level (for sake of character power it would be worth it for them) - it's not due to content being gatekept behind an arbitrary level. Helped in part by most of the content being open world.

I'd be curious how much power increases by level (and the power difference between a fresh max level character vs a geared one).

I really hope that won't be huge numbers, also for weapons, armours stats which we know they will increase with time (updates, addons, expansions). Huge numbers popping up my screen is a big no, personally, but i suppose they will have an option to turn them off whenever we want,

As for levelling, I've read that wiki page and seems really nice. Really high hopes for this one, since I am a World of Warcraft veteran and lover of the Vanilla/TBC part of the game. :)

Forget the games where you can get max lvl mainly by doing msq and few side quests. They are going for a more old school approach. I'm pretty sure exp from quests will be minor and the most exp will come from grind and raids.

I'm really looking forward to levels actually meaning something. I don't want a truly enormous power differential, but I want level 50 to be a dedicated accomplishment, something where you can respect the time and effort that went into it.

There's a sense of wonder when you're level 20 and spent two and a half weeks getting there, and then you see a level 50 guy ride by on a beautiful mount, wearing amazing armor, and just generally looking like someone so far out of your league, and realizing you can be that guy if you just put in the time and effort.

Not only is leveling going to be slower paced, its also going to be time gated a bit when the game launches because higher level content needs nodes to level up first.

Gear (weapons and armor) has approximately a 40-50% influence on a player's overall power in the game. so given if you have half decent gear as you hit lvl 50 imo a geared player would be about 20-40% stronger than a fresh 50 since that 50 would have somewhat okay gear to make up that other 10-30% depending on their gear, just depends how much stats the leveling gear has compared to end game crafted stuff.

. skill is gonna be a main factor as you will still see undergeared skilled groups killing / clearing content that less skilled but more geared people cant clear
  • I just posted an idea about this that would nicely tie into the concept of leveling and then I saw your thread here: https://forums.ashesofcreation.com/discussion/59910/idea-classes-should-have-special-events-for-leveling#latest

I'm surprised to see so many people concerned about it being claimed to take "only" 45 days to reach max level if you are playing 4-6 hours a day. That is a very long time to hit max level compared to most MMOs. Of course this will be more like the older school leveling systems, but that is still plenty of time.

Also a race to max from my experience doesn't seem to really reap much of a reward in the long term, since others will focus on horizontal progression like artisan skills, land ownership, etc while those racing to max level will have nothing but a lot of vertical progression. In the long term these players are hurt by that.

We will of course learn more as we get closer to launch in the coming years.
