Failed to retrieve character list

I randomly lost connection to the server and now if i try to log back into my character it says unable to retrieve character list exiting. It will then close the game to the launcher. It has now been 3 hours I can create new characters and log in and play on them but not that one character that got disconnected. Is this character lost forever? Should i just start a new character?
