You cant walk 4 inches out of the city with out tripping over iron nodes

    This actually belies the reason.
Not everyone can mine iron nodes. There are fewer iron nodes than copper nodes (seriously) it's just that copper nodes are scooped up as soon as they spawn.

I think what might be happening is that either copper is bugged and not respawning after being harvested when the server restarts or they are respawning as tier 2 ores that no one can harvest

Spending that many hours trying to craft a sword that isnt good is hilarious when you couldve played and found better. This is a user error

I disagree, This is Alpha. I was testing the crafting experience. I found the experience Negative. But I am catching on to your Vibe that you think I'm stupid for trying to test the alpha and not play like you would.

I have heard that later on the best gear will be crafted. I spent a full day trying to make 1 sword (and failed). I actually got enough zinc to make some shoulders and got 10% of armor crafting lvl 1. By the way as a metal smith in real life making armor out of zinc is dumb, just saying
If weaponsmith follows the same curve that's 10 swords at over 10 days for me just to get lvl 2. only 8 more levels to go to get to the next tier, which I assume might be iron.

If the copper and zinc levels are as intended, I can only assume that is so that only the most dedicated guilds funneling mats to 1 or 2 players at first to power level them up is what they want. Which once again is just not my thing.

Sadly like I said I'll probably just give my code away to family member or something. Especially since none of my friends from other games who bought into the kickstarter will be playing anyway. We have watched the updates over the last 7 years and have watched slowly become something we weren't interested in. I was the only one in the group willing to give it a quick chance. I might try again in beta who knows.

Let me help clarify a few things because it seems like there’s a misunderstanding here about what this Alpha phase is actually testing. Right now, Ashes of Creation Alpha Two Phase One isn’t designed to refine crafting or adjust node resource distribution—it’s primarily focused on core performance testing, like server stability, client performance, and the download/installation process. So, no, crafting isn’t a priority at this stage, and they aren’t actively working on balancing crafting progression or node spawn rates yet.

The devs are intentionally holding off on fine-tuning aspects like crafting until they’ve solidified the foundational systems. That way, when the time comes, they can adjust gameplay mechanics, nodes, and crafting to align with the overall game balance and player feedback. So if crafting feels rough, that’s because it’s not the focus right now. Hopefully, this clears up why your experience felt off—just hang tight, and when the time comes, your feedback on crafting will definitely be more relevant.

I don't understand why people defend intrepid on that case. It's obvious that there are not enough copper/zinc nodes, like come on - they are tier 1 crafting resource, we shouldn't struggle 6 hours to craft one item. 6+ hours should take to actually craft the whole set, by grinding 6 hours on most spots you will get level 10+ which unlocks better gear and on top of that you get drops if you kill humanoids.

Yeah, Ashes’ crafting is in a sorry state currently. It needs a massive overhaul. It’s a very unfun and unrewarding system in its current state. I hope in phase 2 or 3. They put a lot of work on fixing it.

I agree, combat system and overall idea of nodes and caravans is top tier, but this game is so raw and unfinished that I think phase 2 won't change anything. I hope they will manage to fix all stability issues and expand content until phase 3.

Hopefully its just an alpha issue and crafting will get sorted.. the items should be pretty basic to craft..

I spend the weekend trying to make some fish salad things.. and honestly I think it took over 20 different types of resources over different professions just to make a single fish salad..

That was for the only fish food that I could make.. sure there is a basic non fish salad but looking at the costs of the parts you are better off just buying the food from the vendor..

Anyway the starter crafting items should be easy to make so people can get into it and not get totally put off by a process that take half a day to make the most basic of items.

Its been pvp since the jump.

Maybe it has been since jump. I just don't remember this it was 7 or 8 years ago and I've had a few kids since then.(dont have kids in your late 40's it'll rot your brain} I just remember when I i gave to kickstarter them talking about a return to a more classic mmo experience. Since they kept talking about everquest roots I thought they ment that and not Ultima online (which I also hated)

I check and they're no mention of pvp game in the kickstarter. I back for 125$ too in the kickstarter and i'm not a pvp player ^^
In the current version pvp have to much impact in the game for me too :(

    On-topic:

@OP Good news is that copper is slightly easier to find now that some people are moving on from it and starting to target more journeyman tier gatherables (iron) instead.

The difficult thing is, right now we might be testing in a non-representative fashion, compared to how the game will be after full release because the player density is currently all crammed into one and a half zones, basically. There will be many zones at launch. But, on the other hand.. there will also be orders of magnitude more people at launch as well. So it is difficult to tell if the current gatherables density and spawn rate is well-tuned for the long run or not. I'm guessing there will continue to be tuning of this even after full release.

I started out with a simple goal today. To craft a 2 handed copper sword mostly just to say I did and to check out the mining and smithing system.

All I can say is that I have now wasted 7 hours of my life that I will never get back. after 6 hours I only found 2 copper nodes and mined 7 total copper, it takes 20 to make the sword. I ran all over Gods green acre looking for copper. I then take nearly 10 minutes to turn the copper into fragments just to 20 minutes later to get trained, die and lose 4 of my 7 fragments.

I HATE that random people can just walk by and take my stuff. OR that the game just destroys half my stuff (not sure which don't care)
Welcome to the casual AoC experience. Mining improves somewhat when you hit level 10, upgrade your pick to apprentice quality and get certified.

Atm resource spawners are fairly static, and on long timers so its easy to camp them if you already cleared them and you know the timers. This goes against the advertised design to some degree, and it's pretty bad for the player experience. You are not the first person (I was one of them) to come to that conclusion. I would rather have plentiful resources and deal with items you can only fix x amount of times before you have to craft them anew. New World just hit that spot for me with how satisfying gathering should feel. Ashes can feel like you get cheated out of your free time, and I hate that in games.

Anyway if you hated the early levels crafting experience, you will despise how it goes rather complicated and grindy later on. You are also reliant on multiple professions to obtain materials and components. It starts feeling a bit Eve Online out there, which I wouldn't mind if the game actually offered well designed tools for searching and trading.

Some suggestions, First don't look for copper nodes, takes too long. Mine every node you see, you can get random procs of copper from any node. you can vendor the Basalt/Granite or process them then vendor up to you.

NEVER walk around with your stuff in your inventory always put it in storage, you should only have rare mats on you when your crafting.

From what walking around i have done,

copper and granite is sparse compared to basalt and iron...

To use a WoW comparison it fells like were starting in Timberline Falls instead of Elwynn Forest....

There is just as much Granite as Basalt, there just in different areas. Copper is some what rare, but if you just mine everything you see you can get a decent amount. If your a bit lucky.
