Love the game, hate the controls

neobpmneobpm Member, Alpha Two
Hello,

I'm happy playing this wave 2, the map, the lore, the graphics, the skills, etc are near to be perfect but I have a problem with this game...

I'm playing in "action" mode because I hate MMO for mouse clickers, I want a play style like a hack and slash but in this game it is impossible, there is like a hell to control the charr and has many bugs making the game horrible for me.

Please, can you improve "action" style?

How?

1- Every time I run the game I must to push "z" (the key where I binded action mode).

2- Every time I mount the horse I must to push "z" and many times it becomes buged forcing me to push various times until I debug that.

3- When I open a window, for example inventory and I click on an intem the charr becomes to spam the weapon auto-atack, why the game doesn't detect I have a window open?

4- There are windows like inventory who don't swap to "mouse mode" when I open it, I must to open the map to enter in "mouse mode" and before I must to open the inventory.

Devs, please, take care about that, there are many people who want to play AoC in action mode, but at this moment is near to be impossible making impossible to play your game.

Tbf, I've only played about an hour in this phase but the controls / interactions are dire, leaving me no enjoyment to carry on playing. I want my mouse movement to change my view / direction. I don't want to have to open my Inventory to get my mount then click again to get on it, then faff about trying to dismiss it. I don't want a separate button, Q, as my first wep choice, then Num keys for the rest. I want the Map / Inventory, etc "screens" to auto disappear when i move. i could play around with the Bindings, but the basics are obvious. I get the trying to be different model, which may have worked 30 years ago, when I first started MMO's, but nowadays it doesn't wash. "Modern "Players want smooth interactions, not clunky mechanics. I tested ESO before release and played FFX1V at the beginning. Both were, to be polite, appalling. Don't make the same mistakes. i did the Kickstarter, as the game looked worth backing. However, so far, it seems like a waste of money.

I'm very vocal about not liking ESO, but those examples cover two fairly popular MMOs, and ESO is action combat. So is there any MMO where you like the controls? Maybe Black Desert? Any others?

Anyways, this isn't an action combat MMO. There are disadvantages and advantages to that. Try and pay attention to the advantages (many of them only materialise later in the game when you have more skills to manage and decisions to make than you could ever have in a game where the "mouse movement changes your view/direction.")
The only one who can validate you for all the posts you didn't write is you.

I'm getting used to the camera controls, but one thing that would make it easier would be when I'm fighting to have an auto face feature so I don't have to perfectly align myself just to keep my auto attacks up. If I've already got it targeted, is it really beyond the pale for my character to follow my target if I'm turning?

It's really annoying to have to correct my camera and then go back to a fight as a ranged when characters (like rolling goblins) are teleporting across the map at me. Mobs can literally line of sight me just by running past and then I'm unable to auto attack and have to turn my character, turn my camera and then also in some cases re-target what I'm fighting.

It makes it terrible to kite anything as a ranger, which should be a mobile class.

5- Every time the game loads a zone the "action mode" is buged and I must to stop running and forced to debug it, if I was on horse the problem is worse.

Why is impossible to play in "action mode" this game?

I really thinking to leave the game because I can't play in "mouse mode", very bad support for this important aspect.

My point was that both made changes. Like it or not, smooth movement and having all wep controls on an Action bar are better than have the Q button as a wep button. Yes you can rebind it but it's a basic flaw. Wandering around the game, the amount of mounts not put away, is yet another flaw with the control system. Keep it simple. The HUD resizing system is also poor. The maps are poor, Open Inv / map tabs etc don't close automatically when you move off. Yes it's a beta test phase but these are simple & basic game interactions that are commonplace, except for here. easily fixable. Players want smooth gameplay without irritating flaws. Over 30 years of both hardcore and casual MMO playing has shown me what works and doesn't, usually dependant on the time I stuck with a game. I see that there are many issues found, so the test is working as it should. Hopefully it'll just get better.

I honestly wish the gameplay was like ESO. I was so turned off by the action combat in this game I haven't touched A2 since it released.

they need to add ground target spells an option to cast @ the players feet.. they dont realise this but we can just macro curser position so by not having it it puts all the computer illiterates at a disadvantage..

ESO's action controls were very good. I never had any issues with targeting in that game or in using the UI. AoC has a ways to go to make the action mode feel natural.

For now I'm playing in mouse mode, but I'd really like to go action and free up mouse1 and mouse2 for combat commands rather than camera control

You can do that! Hold right-click and your movement follows the mouse!

You don't have to do that! Drag the mount to a hotbar slot and presto, you have a keybind to summon/unsummon!

You can rebind any action to any key! (I think; not 100% sure about basic attack but it seems likely)

This all sounds like beta+ phase polish to be considered later. Not really alpha priority material there.

I loathe having to hold my right mouse button down to have reasonable movement. I also am hoping this idiotic fussy targeting gets addressed.

The problem is playing a mouse clicker game in 2025, maybe it was well in 1999 MMOs but not for current games.
  • Its_MeIts_Me Member, Alpha Two
Action combat needs a lot of attention, I hope testers list this under their feedback mentions we were just asked for.

A non-target system like New World or similar.

You're not going to get much support if you're trying to make Ashes like New World... :D

I'm not trying to make AoC like NW, I'm trying to improve the arcaic mouse clicker system of this MMO, a full supported action system is mandatory for a game like this in 2025.

Mandatory is a stretch, but I agree. The action combat is so bad I had to revert to tab target. I don't want to hold right click to turn or misclick someone in group PvP. Let me just aim my skills. Give me a target self hotkey.

New World was a great example for action combat done well. Lots wrong with that game but the controls felt great. They could even add the telegraphs like Wildstar had to make it "easier".

I play it like tab target and unbound the action swap hotkey and game feels great to me.

I honestly wish the gameplay was like ESO. I was so turned off by the action combat in this game I haven't touched A2 since it released.

While i don't remember ESO anymore aside from testing it for a Week or Two right at Release and that was a long time ago,

what bothers me personally is the Mount Speed. When i look back at the monthly or not so monthly Representations with Mounts back then,

i think i saw Mounts move with "EASILY" +200% to +300% Percent Speed compared to the " 100% Horse Speed " we have now, which can only be boosted a little bit for Five Seconds or so to 135%,

( and i know the Horse can be made a tiny little bit faster with the Hunter/Ranger Buff for Speed, but that feels more like 3% to 5% instead of 10% ^.^ )

so that feels pretty bad to me. And honestly "some" Mounts in those Presentations there were SUUUUUUUPERfast, but that looked like the temporary Speedboost to me and not like an Ability/Speed they have active all the time.

Then i witness other Players riding around on :
    - Big Cats (?)
    - Bears
    - "Crocodiles"/Lizards(??)
    - Big Rats/Mice, whatever

    and i realise these things are somewhat a bit "FASTER" than my Horse ??? :D . :D . :D

    I don't want to sound entitled. I really don't.
This however - doesn't feel very motivating to me to understand this surprisingly difficult to understand English Client of the Alpha Two and give my very best to try and reach something like this, too. :D

I just "KNOW" the burnout will fxxx me over twice to triple as much if i try.

Glad that the Freeholds are somewhat in the Alpha now, though. Although i hope they get improved in looks as well. Everything looks so clunky and is not even inbound with the Worldmap,

that i wonder if this Alpha Two will take not at least Three to Four, or maybe a complete handful of Years since the Beginning in late October.

I don't WANT to say Placeholders -> because i know they are not -> but everything looks so incredibly "hammered" there and it looks like the Developer Team just hopes they can get it to work sometime in the Future.

This is truly the most rocky and gruff and stony Start of an Alpha and a Game ever. I can feel it. And i bet everyone else who understands the English Client just fine understands it, too. ;)
