Going to play the Alpha for the first time this evening, very excited.

I've avoided all content about AoC, except for every couple years checking progress since the kickstarter. So I have no idea what to expect except for bugs because alpha.

Without spoiling too much gameplay, what would you guys recommend for a first character build, something fun for solo but still useful in group play?

For the archetypes, depends what you like to play, fun is a very subjective stuff. Do like caster or melee usually?

Oh damn, well that shot down my balloon haha. Tomorrow it is then! I usually play a healer in MMOs, some kind of melee healer would be fun, but I'm down for anything that has some healing potential in group/PVP play.

You can try Cleric or maybe Bard. Second archetype aren't yet in game, so may not be able to able to specialiaze as you want.

Sounds like cleric or bard pick to me. Bard is more solo friendly I would say, and more fleshed out as a class. I find clerics skill set pretty boring, but it has potential if Intrepid eventually does rebalances, fleshes out class identity and adds those optional classes. Maybe then you will be able to run a melee based healer, like a paladin or war priest and call it a legitimate playstyle. Right now, you are more likely to do it with bard.
