• Path of Exile did it right, imo, that's about as much cash shop as I could support - and even that's stretching it IF this is a monthly sub game.
• First - hello all. I've literally just discovered this game oh about 30 minutes ago. So to say I'm new here is an understatement. I'm sure I'm like many of you guys/gals out there -- a veteran of MMORPG games....it is my favorite genre of game by far.... in short if it's a popular MMO title within the last 10 years I've probably played it (with one exception believe it or not I've never played *any* Final Fantasy game)....including the most popular of them all WoW -- where I've invested over a decade of "my gamer time" into.

Anyway my diatribe here is because I'm excited for the concept of "Ashes" having read as much as currently on this website about it. But its also because I'm wanting to be cautious as well -- so many games that sound good in concept / early development have let me down and fell flat when it actually releases. Also I'm sure this game won't be released for at least 4-5 years since it seems it really just got off the ground.

I agree with the OP of the thread.....please devs PLEASE do not make any P2W in this game. Though reading other comments it seems the devs are already against P2W which is very encouraging.

I'm excited even for a chance to play an alpha of this title, like I hinted at -- I'm a dork about MMORPGs I just enjoy the genre a great deal.

If anyone sees this though and you have answers to these questions please let me know?

- Will Ashes have any instanced content -- like Raids and Dungeons?

- Is this game intended to be subscription based , pay to play or free 2 play?

thanks.

Hi Mytheros and welcome to AoC.

There is a great document available on googledocs with almost all of the currently known information you should definitely review. Print it on soft paper and take it to the loo with you perhaps :)

Here is the link to the full document: https://docs.google.com/document/d/14luppZ3Ub8jmcw_aK65QWxYY4xa8qAo9zRfpYWBxOXE/edit#

In answer to your questions:

1) "Both.  As it stands now, many dungeons in the world have an open world component, with several instance access points that parties can participate in.  We want to maintain the open world feel while being able to capitalize on the benefits of instanced mechanics.  We will go into more depth in a blog soon."

There will also be instanced housing (but not only).

2) "The purchase model will be a monthly subscription. "
•
I believe a cash shop is not evil as most of us mentioned if it’s there exclusively for cosmetics and mounts. Yes it destroys some crafting possibilities for players but it’s a reliable way for us to show our support. Keeping sub numbers high at all times i don’t think is very feasible in an f2p game. The only issue is most devs or publishers give in to their greed and pretty much transform their cosmetic cash shop into a p2w one.

This is not a F2P game. It is subscription based at $15/month. As long as only cosmetic/vanity items are included, I am not opposed to the shop.
• I can't wait to see what information gets released out on May 1st!

This is indeed a subscription based game. $15/month. Raids and dungeons have been confirmed.
• Sub based how? Buy+sub or f2p+sub? I don't think i've seen many "sub only" games.

The latest info we have suggests subscription but free download. I'm not sure if that will be enough to dissuade the potential spammers/bots but I suspect we will learn more as we march along.
•
This is great to hear. Even LotRO, the one MMO that had purely cosmetic store for so long started selling stuff that lets you gear up fast so i’m afraid of this becoming the norm. Some see it as a quick way to make cash but they fail to realize it hurts the game in the long run.
There is only a need to gear up fast if there is a power gap between alts, new players and vets.
ie Vertical progression. (Which most if not all games suffer with by design)
Sadly, the older the game, the bigger that vertical gap becomes, until it nigh on impossible to reach.

If you use horizontal progression, there is no power gap, only a choices gap.
So pay to progress isnt relevant ....let alone a forced requirement.

The primary class will be vertical....and how long it takes to reach power cap is unknown.
The secondary class is horizontal...and how long it takes to gain access to all options is unknown
