Races and Reasoning

So, i was wondering what kind of races we can hope to see in Ashes of Creation. Many other MMO's have the dwarf orc elf aesthetic and i was wondering if AoC is going to be doing the same or trying to do their own twist on the races and bring in some new ones of their own. On top of that i really want to know for what reasons are they there what brought the races to this land and their differences in culture. Though I'm fine with the cliche of Orks and "Waggggh" it is always nice to see a team of developers break from the mold and make something different. Maybe the elves are the war hungry ones who think other races are beneath them and should be squashed and the orks just wanna live in their mountain homes peacefully. It's these kind of thing i want to know on top of what races we can expect.

Side note: i am 100% fine if we only get to pick from humans i'm just curious on this subject of races

• I don't wanna be that guy, but this has been discussed in a 5 pages long thread already ;) <a href="https://www.ashesofcreation.com/forums/topic/what-races-will-there-be-do-you-want-to-see/">This one</a>.

That being said, I just like dwarves, even though they are overused/misused, I just like dwarves :)
• DWARVES. When I started getting hyped, that was the first thing that I looked for. So happy. :)
• THE races is still in development and they are still adding and discussing about what lore would they have and so on and so forth, but one thing is sure that there will be different portals wherein they will come from in the start of the game, 4 portals at least. for more info check out deaths proxy's channel :) https://www.youtube.com/user/DarkWeebl
• I would like to see something a little different and not seen often in mmos. I would love to see races and classes that are alignment specific. Allow me to explain. Many times you have the typical races= elf, dwarf, furry something, lolli (( If its a Asia import)) and humans. Which is fine but what if we had a little difference in the race selections. Have evil and good races make it alignment specific in regards to what race equals what class they can play. Within reason of course. If you want to play a dread knight your options would be evil races. Same for good aligned classes you want to be a paladin well you can only be a "good" race.

Ideas for races
Good Aligned
Elf
Dwarf
Fae
Humans

Evil Aligned
Orc
Troll
Elemental
Humans

Just an idea and I welcome anyone's input and thoughts on this.

Twist
• Samoan Dwarfs as quoted by the YouTuber DeathsProxy sounds pretty cool and unique and will give the game the very first proper Pacific island race that will set this game apart. Besides, who wouldn't want to be a dwarf version of Maui(from the Disney movie Moana) smacking the other races around like a beast! cheeehoooo! lol

<img src="https://thetomatos.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/wolfpack-clipart-1.png" alt="" />
• We know: 2 Elven Races. 2 Human Races. Orcs. Dwarves. There are said to be 8 races total, so that leaves 2 unconfirmed.

In the original announcement of the game, as Proxy mentions in his video, it was said there would be 4 races, with 2 types each. In my opinion, this may be what we see:

<a href="http://i.imgur.com/nvNzjgW.jpg" target="_blank">Humans and Halflings</a> as the "2 Kinds of Humans"
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/xFwfa4O.png" target="_blank">Elves</a> and <a href="http://i.imgur.com/AbcTwZj.jpg" target="_blank">Dark Elves</a>
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/ttbpJvk.png" target="_blank">Red Orcs</a> and <a href="http://i.imgur.com/XHaCOTD.png" target="_blank">Green Orcs/Goblins/Something</a>
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/5FDnyQ5.jpg" target="_blank">Mountain Dwarves</a> and <a href="http://i.imgur.com/JhE89QV.jpg" target="_blank">Islander Dwarves</a>

Again, nothing positive/airtight, and I could be way off. But, it's the best theory I've got at the moment.
-snip-
I personally have never liked the idea of races having inherent moralities, and instead would much rather leave that up to the individual. Their culture might shift their viewpoints—such as "Survival of the fittest." or "Justice for all." being staples in different cultures, but I would hate for every individual's morality to be determined by their race alone.
• Gotta say i am with Meavynn on this one.
If you carefully study the pictures in the About the Game section you can actually see quite a few races.
In my opinion the races we can see on said page are:
Elves
Humans (the noble knight archetype)
Red skinned Humans (look more like barbarian archetype)
goblins
Either normal dwarf or well fed halfling
Island Dwarves
also some really tall human like people are standing as well

personally i am hoping for some beasty race as well. western games rarely have those. well if you count ESO werewolf they got one but i would rather not. Worgen from WoW are a nice gesture ... but they have no tails cO
Then again how AoC presents itself with the information we have now i would be so perfectly fine with the cliche of dwarf elf human orc ^^
• As above..... morality in races is a bad idea because it pidgeon holes ethnic styles.
I have no objection to morality in classes though.
Healer vs necromancer etc. (ie one that directly increases health regen and one that directly reduces it)
Would that be morality though ?
I guess it depends how you frame destructive and creative forces.

Is destroying destructive forces...an evil act in itself ?
• well a discussion about ehtics would be way deeper. not even the same people follow the same code of ethics. so why should a whole race?
the only thing that would be plausible is that they have something that is important to their race as a whole and thus the largest part of them would adhere to the main parts of some sort of racial code.
the classes themselves would suffer under a similar problem. Most healers could follow a code of ethics in where their goal is to prolong life for lifes sake and help people in need. But that should be the same with the doctors of our world and it is a known fact that there are doctors that do their job solemnly to obtain status and money.
what i am trying to say is that it is neither easy nor hard to create a code of ethic a whole race or class should follow. but to keep it realistic there will always be some who stray from the herd. the problem lies in this exact point. the characters of the player will most likely be the ones that stray from the herd and usually in an MMO there are way more players than there are NPC's, thus the stray will form a new herd and in a real environment overpower the old herd and force their way of thinking upon them.

i am gonna stop here but this short dip into the realm of ethics and morality shows already how big the discussion would be.
• I think I am tending to agree @GeminiStigma

Perhaps it would have been better to say dualistic (opposing) natures rather than draw ethical or moral distinctions.

Funny how subtle shifts in meaning can imply a more suitable context.
• Human/Elf hybrid race like Bretons from Elder Scrolls.
• a bird humanoid race could be interesting. I'm sure some zone would be high in the sky like mountain.
• Maybe a neutral race?
Druids?

Something in between good and evil.

The druid could be able to give small heals to his party members, stun or slow the enemy, and mostlikely debuff the enemy for a certain % of their damage. This way, if people starts to notice that one champion is much stronger than all other champions it will still be in balance, because the debuf would be more significant to the overpowered champions compared to champions that deal less damage.

Also debuff is not incremental, wich means that only one debuff can be given to the enemy. It can only be overruled if the other debuff is stronger coming from a higher level druid.

That would be basically the role of the druid, while a priest can give bigger heals and buff giving players a boost but not in %.
For example +50hp , or +50attack

Or perhaps, a Panda race ;)

Yes i know you like the panda race, don't deny it
Cute but deadly ! <3
• I would kinda like to see something not so often seen in MMO:s, for example.

Horsekin from Deverry novels- "A large and hairy humanoid species which possesses a strong psychic talent which manifests as animal empathy (from wikipedia)" .

Forest folk "Menninkäinen" (finnish folklore creature) usually hairy small humanoid-creatures that like to live in dark and lonely places. I think closest english translation probably would be goblin, though Mennikäinen is usually pictured to be kind-looking and cute in a clumsy way.

Satyr

Nymph or Fay-folk

Then again... I think I'm gonna play Dwarf anyway.. so I'm okey with what ever they think fits the lore/idea of their game.
• Personally I'd be delighted if it was Minotaur.... :)
• We know 8 races.

So we have 6 so far. 2 of the races (elf and human) have sub races. The orc and Dwarf do not. I feel like this is a lot of tinfoil for an eventual Sub Dwarf race and sub orc race.

It's been quoted on this thread already and in the other thread that it was already planned for four races with sub races of each. Do we really believe we will get a surprise and it be two new somethings?
• YUSSS Tiny cute magical Fae folk please!!!
• Time will tell, as long as it suits the lore I'd say anything is possible.
• female dwarves will be like LoTR ones ( fuzz bearded)?
• The game has dwarves that live underground and make things, they are also good warriors. I was sold. I just hope the lore fits into my perceptions of what the dwarves should be like.

Loved their culture in Warhammer and the books of Markus Heitz so if they are something like those or Tolkien's version would be awesome.
• As I mentioned in another similar thread: I believe there needs to be some mixed races such as half-elf / half-orc, etc.

It doesn't make much sense lore-wise to not have some mixed races. One would have to believe that at some point there was some brown chicken, brown cow going on between races. Am I right?
• that would depend if the races could have children together. they may be seperate species that cannot breed
• I love me some mountain dwarves and am happy to see them. I have to say I'm really interested in what they do with the Nikua (Island Dwarves).
• i hope the Island Dwarves are the shipwrights of the Lore, and will have Pirates. Sea-based Dwarves was a idea i had for my own fantasy universe once to break the boring traditional mountain dwarf stereo type
• Personally, I'd love to see halflings

I just hope races do not have their own "racial bonuses". In every game they're uneven and some races are left being played less just because their racial bonus is weak. Or one race benefits certain classes and not others.
I'm tired of seeing elf archers and orc fighters everywhere, only because these races get best bonuses for it.

It was already multiple times said that races will have different stat boni so that race does matter and is not only a cosmetic thing (human female meta)

I do realize that. I just hope they change their minds, because of the reasons that I stated above. I prefer races having their "flavor" but not actual stats. Maybe they will balance it out. Maybe they won't. From what I've seen in other games, there is no balance. Some races get cool bonuses like +5% dmg bonus, or whatever and in the same game the other race is getting +2% to swimming speed.
I'd actually like to see an archer dwarf, or a mage dwarf, or a fighter elf. I don't like they "this race is best for this class" approach. It makes it kinda boring to see the same race+class combination.
• I just hope they change their minds. I'd like to see archer orcs or dwarves and tanky elves.
And if they keep it that way, I just hope bonuses are equal. Not like in some games
Race 1 = +5% dps bonus, while Race 2 = +2% swimming speed. They do this in almost every game...
No balance in racials at all.

there is plenty of time to polish and readjust race characteristics and bonus, so dont worry, i bet we will know before they are stated so we can say if it is good or not
