Like the title says...
Is Ashes of Creation the WoW killer? I need a new game.

These are the correct answers.
Those who are enjoying Ashes gameplay aren’t going to care about its effect on WoW.
Yes. Ashes is basically a WoW clone, but in UE5, and I am 100% sure that Microsoft will shut down the WoW servers the day of AoC release, because they know they can't compete.
I love it when Steven says "The game wont appeal to everyone and if you don't like the core game mechanics feel free to go someplace else." It is a refreshing statement that more game studios need to take instead of trying to cater to everyone.
I mean it is full of dress up features and cosmetics with a cash shop... lots of pets and mounts to collect... Samurai orcs... pretty much a clone... lol
Or it will attain lichdom and exist in undeath until its phylactery server is shutdown or destroyed.
i do like how the characters are aging as the story goes on even if it's gone disney-like.
Everyone at Intrepid is setting out to make the best possible MMORPG that we can, and the one we all want to play. However, it's not going to be for everyone, which is ok! As long as we have a community that enjoys the game, and we're able to keep it going, we win! Of course, it would be wonderful if Ashes of Creation becomes the next most popular MMORPG! Though, we don't necessarily need to dethrone or kill another game to be successful
This is just my own personal 2 cents on the matter. I'd be curious to hear how you all feel about this!
Usually streamers pushing it for content/view baiting for hype just like how streamers also claim any other MMORPG will fail. It's almost like it's a War of the Shills lol
WoW is very unenjoyable for a lot of us and it’s not dead yet.
I don’t care if WoW lives or does because it’s not consequential to my MMO experience and it never was my first choice of a game.
A lot of the MMOs out there are not.
The possibility/intended risk of gameplay disruption from other players is the reason why I think this game will not push WoW off the top spot in the list by player count. This is definitely something a lot, if not the majority of players don't enjoy; at least for now. After all sentiment can change if given time.
The thing however with Ashes is that its system update the gameplay loop significantly so I wouldn't be surprised to see a PvE of Ashes version come up in the future. In it, a lot of the player conflict mechanics could be replaced by stronger focus of dynamic system driven PvE scenarios, dungeons and PvP zones would probably be instanced most of the time and consequences of the events in these instances could be added up to then cause changes in the rest of the world. Anyhow this pure speculation assuming that bigger game development studios would even be interested in developing such a product given the capex they have to raise, bind for years if not a decade in development until they can finally release such an intricate product (and let's be real: to them it would be indeed a "product" more than anything else).
TL;DR: The dynamic season&weather system, the world-player reaction system and quest design that Ashes has prompted in its development process could become the basis on which a WoW-Killer MMO could rely. But the level of competition and disruption in Ashes is - as of now - too nasty for the broad player base to enjoy IMO.
Games do not replace each other, they coexist. Especially when they have different proposals.
For example :
I love WoW Era for various reasons. The game is casual and chill and I come back to it regularly by periods. I will probably continue for years to come.
I also like Rust which is a strong opposite given its hardcore and stressful side. I’ve been playing both games for years alternately, and neither has ever replaced the other.
So AoC in all this? I will surely play a lot (too much?) in view of the possibilities of emerging gameplay that it seems destined to offer, and its hight fantasy universe. However I will still play Wow, Rust, BG, Skyrim, etc.
In short, let’s hope that AoC and its community are the best possible, and let’s enjoy the games we love without trying to create barriers between their players.
In fact, if we wanted AoC to dethrone Wow, the games would have to fight on the same promise for the comparison to be relevant. But no one here wants another WoW clone, I’m sure!
If Ashes competes, it will be more with Korean MMORPGs, like Archeage 2, Bellatores, Chrono Odyssey and etc.
I never played WoW even one time in my life but I would like AoC get as much players as WoW
Long answers short, No it probably won't be but lets hope that many people find a home in this game.
Ashes is apart of a new generation of MMOs including Pax Dei, Chronos Odyssey, Archeage 2, Throne and Liberty and the Riot MMO. Those are it's competitors. WoW is irrelevant in many people's minds, including mine.
There's a lot more mmorpg's in development than that currently lol.
The market will become saturated again. The player bases will be thinned out.
It's already saturated and continues to saturate further lol
it's why so many players also have not returned to WoW and wont return. They founds games that called to their desires. But yes, the players in the genre will have many options in the years to come. I heard there even is a new Warhammer mmorpg in the works as well. Based on player counts which MMO is derived from, a lot of lobby games are becoming more MMO-like.
That's due to demographics and marketing around game design. Trying to make a game for everyone is why most games "fail". The time that many games were developed during also have technological issues to stay relevant or modern. Every game will have its diehard, loyalists, old guards etc.
then any MMORPG within the genre is potentially competition regardless of being in development or retail lol
There's also a new definition of Hardcore Gamer. Long gone are the days where hardcore meant long, arduous repetitive tasks although top tier raiding is still known as hardcore. Hardcore these days means fast and loose with the ruleset and pushing the limits of instant gratification. That's why the younger generations are not so attracted to MMOs. There's not much instant gratification.
I'm not going to bother with the hardcore perspective lol....
But yes, the "younger" (next gen) gamers definitely have different perspectives on game design based on what they're used to growing up playing as a generalisation.
