  • I typically find dps really boring. I'm really interested in how the summoners will be but I no doubt will spend a lot of time healing groups. Hope you guys are ready to be blamed for wipes

That stopped bothering me long ago.  They don't like my healing or if a tank or dps does stupid crap then I can always find something else to do.  No skin off my back side!  I don't need raids or groups to survive and enjoy a game.
    It's all a matter of perspective. :)
  • I'm interested in hearing more about Clerics,  It's the one role I have not played yet, and I've seen a lot of different takes on it over the years.

I was set on fire once in many ages past and a healer failed me now look at me im nothing but bones :'(
"Set on fire", friend @Nagash?  No, no, no.  No mere fire caused you that kind of ruin, my friend!  You dared to poke an angry dragon, in it's lair, and it barbecued you to a find, bone seared crisp....  Looks good on you, by the way!

I too, am eagerly awaiting news on the healing class, along with the other more esoteric aligned classes.  The possibilities!
  • I love playing clerics. I love the reponsibility. I also love laughing at people who jump out of every kill and dodge nothing and then blame me for their death.
Well... It bothered me in the beggining of my cleric times but now it's just funny for me.

I just hope cleric's are not buff/debuff/heal bots. I want them to be able to be dps light casters too if they choose so! :)

    The true combination is Cleric/Bard!
I need to get to grips with the lingo. :#
Bards have always been one of my favorites also.  That would be a nice combo!
Not many recent MMOs have potentially allowed Dwarves + Bards so Ashes is a win/win for me. I'm glad you'll have the opportunity to strum a few buffs too. :)
This is something I've never thought of! A dwarf bard, beating on a drum, singing bar tunes of drinking ale and crushing Orcs, all the while buffing his allies!
  • Until that very same dwarf bard falls flat on his face, absolutely pissed and overwhelmed with alcohol. :D
  • I'm on the fence right now if I want to go full time healer. Usually I'm AoE DPS (who isn't?) but there is -nothing- like a good dedicated healer. Eventually they become even rarer as time goes on.
  • I love playing healers far more then I enjoy being healed by them. The first option helps keep me alive. The second gives me delusions of grandeur.
  • Hmm... noticing a small trend towards the view that if you want to be a healer, cleric-cleric is going to be where it's at.
Glad that some folks are pointing out the cleric-bard mix has potential, and I've seen elsewhere folks discussing cleric-rogue....

I REALLY hope that as long as you are a cleric----something you can function as the main healer, without being hated upon in pugs, because I'm going to be spending a long time experimenting with finding 'the one' build, that allows me maximum enjoyment without detracting from healing

  • Considering the movement involved in gameplay in this game (enabling dodging) and secondary classes, has anyone considered that Clerics might not be wanted due to people being able to dodge attacks or people picking Clerics as a secondary class and gaining heals? I want to be a healer, but not if I can't actually support anyone.
  • You raise a valid point @Odd but I do think there'll always be a demand for cleric/clerics. Having said that, what you've alluded too is the potential for so many different builds through mixing class with sub-class and that's why I truly hope the racials become obsolete beyond the beginning of the game or at least tiered and selectable from creation if racials are to be a prominent part of a characters make-up.
  • Odd  I've played games where other classes could self heal or help heal others.  Also I've played where you could mix your classes.  I've also tried both in those games.   Being able to self heal is viable and can be fun but in a group, dungeon or raid dedicated healers are still wanted and needed.  Their concentration is the entire group and not just self.  That is the difference.

Even in a raid some times  you have several healers and one or even two are assigned to focus on just the tank.  That leaves the tank more apt to stand up to his adversary and keep the agro on him.

Dodging and moving are essential in the most basic games. In many it's not just an "automatic" thing/skill and even if it is you still better know how to dodge and get out of the fire. :)

  • Cleric//Tank Cleric/Bard and Cleric/Ranger "sound" like they could be the most interesting combinations to me. But I guess we'll all have to see how the different combinations look and play thematically. I'm sure we're in for some surprise.

Yep. Much will depend on class abilities and actual play styles.

Cleric/Cleric doesn't necessarily mean the best healer.

    Future healer here (80% sure).

The thing I most concerned about is combat gameplay. I am hoping for a good deal of none tab target heals that require me to move around and pay as much attention as dps. I tend to get bored just sitting in the back watching health bars and playing wack a mole.

If Cleric doesn't work out Bard and Summoner should suffice.
I never found healing boring but a challenge.  A healer has to have their eyes everywhere, not just on health bars.  You have to be ready to heal that mage when you see a nasty heading his way. You have to be prepared to move quick when that boss is shooting his cone of fire at you.  You have to hope someone has your back, and boy ya better keep that tank up.  Healers get blamed when some who never heed mechanics try to die over and over.  There is much that goes into healing in many games.  Often you have to watch the buffs and be ready to cure diseases.   PVP has even more challenges for healers.  A dedicated healer is more concerned with healing and keeping the team or partner alive and not how much dps they can do.   One game I played the clerics  had their smite spells nerfed. Well after,  that many quit healing all together leaving a big shortage in dedicated healers.

Depends on the game or fight. Sometimes fights are tank and spank so you can basically sit away from the fray and just play wack a mole. Heal the low hp guy and go back to waiting for the next one to be low on hp. When you're watching the health bars you'll see all of the debuffs and of course purge those away. I am just hoping combat is dynamic and exciting so there aren't a lot of fights where that is all the healer needs to do is play wack a mole.

I've literally fallen asleep because it was so boring. No one died (until i fell asleep) so I was keeping everyone alive but was soo bored.

TERA was probably the most fun I have had healing.
  • Since we are on the topic, we might as well go into some speculations!

From what I remember from my healing days, there were two types of healers, each with subclasses: Raid ((AoE and HoT healing)), and Tank ((Mitigation and Burst healing))

With those in mind, we might be able to formulate what the "8" healing classes will be. Here is my list as food for thought:

    Cleric/Cleric: Raid AoE
    Cleric/Tank: Tank Mitigation
    Cleric/Fighter: Tank Mitigation
    Cleric/Bard: Raid HoT
    Cleric/Mage: Raid AoE
Cleric/Summoner: Tank Burst (( I'd say a damage/heal hybrid. Damage summons creatures that in turn do burst healing))
Cleric/Ranger: Raid HoT ((Can't help but laugh at the thought of this hybrid shooting people in the back with health arrows... similar to Ana in Overwatch))
Cleric/Rogue: Tank Burst  ((This would work like ritualistic sacrifice. Bleeds would give leeching health to raid/party members within range.))
  • Definitely looking forward to seeing how the other seven classes as secondaries affect the primary abilities of the Cleric class. NEED MORE INFO.

    You'd be surprised...
I played Wildstar for a while.  There were red colored telegraphs on the ground, advertising where the attack was going to be.  People had dodge rolls, sprint, and double jumps available.  They'd still get smashed and I'd have to heal em up.
A healer's work is never done!

As a tank player, I just want to say that you cleric players are so often underappreciated in early game, everyone want damage dealers in their party and leaving clerics to struggle on their own. Just so later on, they come begging/looking for heal in raids. So THANK YOU, you guys are the best!

If any of you future clerics are interested, leave your phone # below. I will treat you to a proper dinner, possibly a movie afterward and promise to deliver the best aggro performance you will ever experience.

Or just leave a comment... or a message, whatever you feel like... I need friends...  :/

Dwarven Minstrels in LOTRO were a thing. Not all dwarfs drink. We really shouldn't encourage such irresponsible stereotyping.  o:)

Heh heh, Dwarven bards should use empty ale kegs as drums... just saying.

Probably most fun I've had playing an MMO. Dwarf minstrel was awesome and I hope I'll see parallels with the Dwarf bard. Baruk Khazad! Khazad a'i menu! :3

Virtek So true!  It's that way in most games.

Odd Picking a cleric as a secondary class is not going to completely help but will only enhance a main class's abilities in some way.    We will have to wait and see.
  • I've mained a damage dealer, I've mained a tank.  While I've played the type before I've never mained a healer before, and imagine it involves a particular mindset beyond trying to save everyone. I think the healer will be pretty awesome to play, and will be a nice way to break the ice and get connected.
  • Cleric summoner here to DoT heal the fk out of my scrub teams. Looking forward to the salt from my groups that blame me when they die for being out of position repeatedly :)
  • I still would like to say I new to healing in general, and never in a pvp setting. how do you keep yourself from falling asleep watching the bars?

You don't really have time to watch health bars in PvP. Vids have hinted at tab target healing so that requires good binding in order to be effective but I suspect that there will be cone heals also. In both cases, you'll have to move and endure and overcome CC. It's challenging but very rewarding and, imo, much more stimulating than working on and sustaining a skill rotation as per DPS.
