Crafting professions, and building your fortune!

Hey everyone!

I have always looked for great crafting mechanics and enjoy these types of aspects in games. Economics being a huge part of this game, I am wondering how everyone is going to approach building their fortune in Ashes.  The way the local economies will be a part of the greater whole is going to add an interesting layer of depth to the trading process, and with gear decay it will be necessary!

Will you be the intrepid gatherer, the tireless processor, or the skilled craftsman?  Will you forego all and build your fortune through conquest or adventure?  Will you be the highwayman taking advantage of the bleary eyed smith trying to transport his goods from town to town?

How will you pave your way?  Please feel free to leave details below!

  • Hoping that there is a fleshed out and flashy jewelcrafting profession in AoC, as that is my favorite crafting profession to play in any game. If this is finally the game that inset gems can be viewed in the game model...I'll be hooked
  • Well there was talk of having your equipped utility items (potions, scrolls, etc.) being visible on your toolbelt.  It might not be farfetched.
  • if you want to make the most money, gatherer is likely the way to go. Gathering is traditionally the least popular profession, and without it, there is no supply for processors or crafters. given that you can't "specialize in all 3" it means that there will be far less specialized gatherers, putting their resources in high demand.
  • For sure, and for that reason I plan to eventually have 3 characters that I focus on depending on what task needs done, or what role is required for content.   Gathering will be raw time invested to profit, whereas processing and crafting will have overhead costs if you arent supplying your own gathering with alts.  It will be really interesting to see how the economy ebbs and flows as nodes discover resource veins.

Oh no! I have a terrible record with poles here. At least two now that I pushed the wrong "button".

I'll likely be a gatherer. That way I can use my actual class skills out in the world more often, explore more, meet others and hopefully not be caught by Umji to be killed and eaten.

  • I will also make several characters to fill all my needs.

This is also my plan.  It might end up being tedious, but once I get a solid cash flow off crafting I might taper back down to focusing on crafting specialties.  My wife and son will also be playing, though, so we will probably have a labor compound for our alts somewhere.
  • Gathering 100%

If anyone needs a supplier, I'm happy to CoD materials to you :D
  • I have to admit gathering is without a doubt going to be safe and steady income.  And don't worry about CoD'ing me, I'll snatch the materials from your caravan.
  • ^^ Basically I've just committed to play full time for the rest of my life. And I can't even change my poll answer :joy:
  • I will concentrate on the crafting element.  Will I have alts to play other roles?  Of course but you cant to everything all at once.  I look forward to being part of the economic trinity.
  • will be going none until i know what rest of guild is doing a filling in , no point having 7 crafting  and no gatherers no to soon to tell  so i just fill in
  • I'd like to see more than just that... the merchant role and maybe even trader role would be cool! It's ultimately a different style of game play that crafters may not automatically enjoy (or they may!)

I made a thread on it a while back :)

  • I plan too start out with gathering, so when im lvling i can gather stuff, then switch it to crafting when i have a better understanding of what i need and what i don't need.
Might also be able to make a quick buck, selling mats to the early crafters.
  • As I enjoy most aspects of games I will not limit meself on anything
  • I love crafting and gathering. But I'll focus on whichever my guild needs.

If there is a carpenter/furniture crafter type class... I'd naturally gravitate towards that.
  • I love it all, it will be so hard to choose.
  • Gatherer, because I'm a wanderer.

@lexmax, that was pretty much my consideration. I mean, how much time (not daily, but months/years) am I hoping to be here? Quite a few, actually. I will, as I generally do, probably roll a healing class first, but she'll also be traveling the world with @Possum and hopefully @IsamuTheMad as well as other guildies. Will she become a gatherer, picking stuff up as she goes? Or will she want to become a processor, or a crafter? Who knows, the bloody characters I create have minds of their own.

What I do know is that, as things currently stand, it is my most sincere wish to reside in this game for quite some time. Doing that will allow me to carefully nurture an army of alts, some of whom will do a little bit of everything. I'll have my main(s), of course, but why not have a few hands in different pots?

    Sounds like fun to me!
  • Hello.  My name is Deco, and I'm an altoholic.

I will be doing all of the things, because there's a little demon inside me that's always looking for new and interesting ways to deprive me of sleep...
  • All the alts!
  • I plan on specializing in smithing so I'll eventually need to do a bit of everything. If I don't getting ingredients will most likely end up being expensive and cutting profits down excessively.  On the other side, If I did nothing but craft who would kill the abominations of this world?
  • Hmm I'm pretty sure you can't be "all of the above" to a certain extent anyway ^^ some good money to be made in processing then judging by the current % atm ^^ I'll be gathering though - i love being able to recognise plants and veins in rocks - I can spend all day just exploring and helping myself to Mother Earth :3
  • I want to be all of the above, but I don't think the devs will let us...

For sure, can't be master of all.

Crafting's never been my gig, and I like that IS has indicated almost nothing will be soulbound - so I can just make my cash off gathering, and buy the stuff all of you lovely crafters make :)

@Severok good luck! I look forward to tying you to the back of my caravan when I'm done with you :)

Also - jeez, I go away from the forums for one day and @Diura @Kratz are both 5 stars, don't I feel left behind
  • How hard will it be to focus in all of them? It'll be quite a monumental task especially if you require social progression to really max out a profession.

The could just be the power gamer in me speaking though. Heh. I'll probably dabble in many but focus in one. Then funnel spare resources to other guildies to focus in their areas of craft... Only after that then I'll work on my alts. Heh.

I can't remember what stream it was in but I believe that it was mentioned you can't focus on all of them unless it was through alts and it's just to encourage meaningful interactions between players. I'll get back to you in that though cos I'm half asleep and about to hit they hay and I might be getting muddles up.
  • Unless you use specialized alts I don't think you can maximize them all. I simply plan to do a portion in all cases. My specialization will be blacksmithing and combat. Depending on how they work it though smelting could be considered in the processing or crafting area... As often old smiths would smelt their own metals rather than buy the processed bars.
  • I normally have too much time on my hands so would be doing a bit of everything.

Wonder if i could sell my glorious yellow derriere as a money maker, hmmm  >:)

    I'll pay 10g for that!
