  • I agree with OP. I would not have a problem to pay 50 euros a month as long as I have fun. Computer games are genereally extremely good value for money.

If it was 50 euros a month I would not be playing it
  • Considering the younger people who play these type games, $15 month is probably more then some can really afford.
As it was said previously $15/month has been the standard for many many years now with special discounts for longer subs.
It's also not unusual for a family who games together to buy and sub for each person playing.  I'm more then quite sure many wouldn't consider paying more.

I laugh when I hear many crying they want FTP because ultimately they end up spending more then that $15 month.

  • Yeah, I don't see why they would up it now... Some might be willing to pay more but when it comes down to it they would most likely lose money. Many gamers are poor scrubs like me who have limited funds to spend on stuff like this.
  • the OPis an idiot (as is the poster who thinks 50euro is acceptable). the OP just thinks that spending $30 a month is his requirement for playing and enjoying himself. i have been in that game for well over 6 months and never spent a penny and enjoy myself in it.

back to AoC and the $15 sub though, i posted something about this ages ago and wondered why the standard was still $15 when the cost of server hardware and internet services etc had all dropped.  If you wanted to nab more WoW players I would think that a $10 sub would entice a lot of them over without making it seem like the game cant support itself (see previous point about reduced hardware costs now).
  • Not going to be an issue for me due to my KS. But I would want the CFO to look at what they need to keep staff viable. While server hardware rental (most lease) and internet services has dropped, the cost of keeping good people has risen. One of the nails in the coffin of SWG is when they let community manager go during the kerfuffle of the NGE, SOEs excuse at the time was to reduce costs, but they lost the "community" and never recovered.

Good for you! Most of the playerbase though, myself included, wouldn't want to spend that kind of money on a montly basis on a singular game. Or simply couldn't. Way to think about others, I guess.

As I said before, there's a confirmed in-game shop for various dyes, cosmetic items and other stuff. Feel free to spend 35 euros each month there to hit that 50 euro/month mark! Nothing bad in that for anyone.
  • $30 a month is too much for me.

I'm ganna call BS on this.

You'd pay 50 euros a month to play an MMO? I don't even pay $50 a month on groceries.
  • If the game is good, I am willing to spend more on it. But this is an MMO and I want the game to be accessible to more people, especially players who have more time than money.

I'm all for a non-P2W cash shop and a monthly subscription of $10-15. I will spend if I think it is worth it, and I think this model will be better for the game, better for the business and will maximise revenue.

The only reason why a higher monthly subscription will work for me is that I pledged a Braver of Worlds and a higher monthly subscription might inflate its price.
  • as a braver of worlds. i wouldnt want a higher monthly fee due to less people playing the game for me to interact with because they couldnt afford it. i want as many people to play the game as possible but i also want the game to survive and thrive. 15/mo should do just that.

I agree. If I see a high monthly, I might just sell the account for a profit, and find another game.
  • Hmmm...I always thought these subs should be around $5 or $10 depending on how often the developer updates their game. I know WOW made the $15 sub popular but I don't know how they arrived at that number. I also never buy more than 1 month at  time, in case WOD happens.

I think that price point is okay. There isn't a box priced and expansions are free as well so while it's not the cheapest monthly subscription, aren't future expansions to the game free as well?

It could have been cheaper to attract more players, but Intrepid has to ensure the financial viability of the the game to ensure it's ability to run. I'd much prefer a subscription based system than otherwise where the survival of the game is at the whims and fancy of a few High paying players.
  • @AutumnWillow You need to teach me how to gif my stuff.... I could put some cool looking rain in it and make it shiny... but that's all off topic.

This is kinda the sweet spot as some have already stated. It's not about the total worth it's about accessibility for the general populations. Higher price = narrower market as less people will be able or willing to afford it. Like others here I'm also a Braver but I scrounged up some extra spending cash because that lifetime sub was to good to pass up on.

Pretty much comes down to this for me. If it's a good game considering the sub model I'd probably play it for several years. At the point of roughly 2.7years in I'd of gotten my monies worth outta it. Anything after that is gravy because I never have to pay a sub again.

The catch is well, I'm out that cash if it turns out I don't like it lol. Sacrifices.
  • The trick is to make game expensive enough so various trolls won't rush to it, but affordable enough for the good folk.

I googled how to to add gifs to images through photoshop. Heh heh, that's how I did it.
  • @AutumnWillow   HAX!!!!! no really though I'll have to look it up then lol.

Congratulations! You've been entered into Welphgryn's Week 21 In-game Hitlist! To redeem your prize, please see Welphgryn in any PVP Flagged zone upon games release.

Thank you for participating and congratulations.
  • @Welphgryn I finally won something papa... be proud of me...

  • 15 $ is fine, they will sell a lot of cash shop items that they had to hire so many salesman/product manager/cash shop stuff to handle things.. They're gonna earn if they make the game.
  • £8 for wow 7 years ago. 15 is more than fair. Not that I wouldn't pay more.

This discussion makes me wish I learnt about this game before the kickstarter ended. I would love to have something subscription free.
  • You can't tell people you're going to charge double the standard when you're brand new studio with a groundbreaking game that hasn't been proven yet.

There is an extended crowdfunding round to cater to the European fans who do not have a credit card, but it is open to all. It is believe that the lifetime subscription should be available then.

It should start within the next couple of weeks.

Isn't lifetime subscription billed as a "kickstarter exclusive"? Heh, I wouldn't get his hopes up too high.

Best not to speculate since this is a relatively sensitive topic and just find out when the June crowdfund kicks off.

Yeah, I am of the camp that it should be exclusive, but I wouldn't complain if Intrepid makes it available for this one month, no longer than that.
  • The game is out in 2 years roughly. $15 a month is half a dollar a day. That's not even noticeable. People shouldn't be so cheap. If you can't afford .5 a day. I doubt you can afford the pc you need to play this kind of game.

I am currently playing Black Desert Online. It is almost a must to have a Value Pack. They are $30 monthly. You can get them off market place but it isn't easy.

I am an over 16 yr EQ player. $15 subscription was the standard almost 20 yrs ago. I really believe that you are WAY under pricing your proposed subscription pricing.

I want your game to succeed and grow. I know you need money to do this.

The thing that hasn't been mentioned yet, is that if people here could afford $30 a month payment, they probably would have been able to afford the $500 cost of a lifetime subscription.

But to have $30 available a month?

I don't believe you're an idiot, so feel a little ashamed that name calling addressed to yourself should have arisen in this thread, I just believe that you may still be of the age that believes that life is easy and everything is yours for the taking if you just try hard.

Sadly life isn't easy, so $30 a month isn't necessarily available to a significant proportion of the global population.  - And as someone has pointed out, you have to consider the global population, places where the daily wage is a lot lower than where you might come from.

    For instance personally:
I don't live in the US.
I am unable to work because of the chemical changes that have fecked up my emotions because of brain damage... then there's my other cognitive and physical issues, then there's fatigue that means I sleep for about 16 hours a day....
My viking works, however we still are teetering on edge of more going out each month than in... and I'm not exactly a teenager any more.

I personally had a few funds available from a house sale that I had been keeping to get lots of tattoos, but after finding this game I had to invest it....but that's having to give up on the dream of ever getting tattoo's unless something miraculous happens with my life. . . . *Hoping for a lottery win here, or to get discovered as a story writer, or some other successful self employment*

A small price increase over $15 a month might be natural over time, or even at launch in two years time, however to double the speculated cost even before anyone has had a chance to get addicted to the game is a little bit of a foolish as it would have much the reverse impact as you would hope.

With much love and hugs to all the community, keeping it positive,
    Megs x

  • This crops up in almost every game now. People complain if the company doesn't offer a way to get subscriptions for in game currency (ie. EVE or WOW). When the company does offer said options, then they complain about the price being too high, or the grind too long. The current one for WOW is that them opening up their token to their other games has driven the in game price too high. And so on, and so on. I feel for those of you physically and mentally disabled that maybe get your only release or enjoyment from gaming. But life is all about choices. If $15 a month is breaking your budget or causing you to do without other toys, you need to rethink your choices. Just like the guy who complains about his potato of a pc that won't run the game, save some money, and upgrade it. Take a look at your day, and maybe shove one or two fewer cheeseburgers in your piehole, and soon enough you'll have tons of extra cash. If you are living on such a razor thin edge that such a minimal amount is causing you to go into overdraft mode, maybe put down the joystick and pick up a second job. Whales and welfare gamers are driving the f2p shitshow that is pre-alpha content being released on Steam so developers can cash in before they say it is too hard and drop the project. While this may sound harsh to many, many others here will recognize the life lesson they learned a long time ago. I would like to see as many people in game as possible, but if some of you are flirting with homelessness over a game sub, you need a good slap to get your attention to what matters.
