No factions... who do we fight?

I understand that there are not going to be factions just races and I understand that it is going to be open pvp world meaning that you can turn on/off pvp mode. Does that mean that as an elf I can kill another elf? or is it going to be based on node controls and defending your node?

Aye. I'm sure there will be node wars, node alliances, guild wars, and guild alliances. We may even see a nation of 2 or 3 nodes form an alliance to take out another node. I'm excited to see how it plays out.
  • It's going to be based on a few things; keep in mind, I'm by no means an expert.

There will be caravans as crafters transport their goods from location to location
There will be node sieges as nodes get built up, but those are long-term events
There will be a flagging system wherein folk are flagged, not flagged, or bounties (due to corruption). So you can choose to engage in PvP with other flagged folk, or you can choose to attempt to PK, in which case the unflagged player has the option of fighting back (less death penalty) or not fighting back (more death penalty but inflicts corruption on the instigating player), or you can choose to not engage in PvP, making that choice if you, yourself, are attacked.

There will be more, as far as I know, but those are the three main areas I paid the most attention to

No factions doesn't actually mean something bad. Faction system would heavily limit what the node system does. As for your question, yes. You can slaughter as many elfes? as you want even if you're an elf.
  • Node to node fights. Probably guild vs guild. There will be no fixed faction hatred.
  • Not having factions means that groups of people aren't restricted from who they can work with or against. I think it's a good choice since this means later in the servers life, one faction won't be almighty that everyone will side with it on character creation or pay to swap teams. Teams and groups of people can and will form together naturally as more players work towards their own goals.

Thanks for the fast reply. So as far as we know there is not something 100% defined in this aspect right? regardless of what they do I am more of a PVE player. I really like to play with the story and stuff like that.
  • @gguirola if you haven't already have a look at the Ashes node system, which is a dynamic system that inspires conflict and cooperation between and within geographical regions. Cities, towns and castles are constantly being sieged as people fight for power and glory. One day you may be enemies with a neighboring node, the next you might be fighting together for survival. The thing that excites me the most about Ashes is that nothing is ever the same and no one can feel totally safe.

So far as we know, no, there will be no factions. I'm uncertain what you're asking, beyond that.

However! I'm not done yet! The following link will take you to the collection of Twitch Streams. The devs have talked, and they've talked extensively, about PvP/PvE and so on and so forth. You may find it helpful! Welcome to the community!

  • I like games where the players get to pick who their enemies are, not just an arbitrary "these are us, that us them. Fight."

Sure I appreciate the built in adversary based on game lore, but it just seems more organic to let players pick who they war with and who are their allies.
  • This is a real question? Seriously? ( They need to add a WTF really button ) The real question is, "Who do you think we fight since there are no factions?"  :o
  • Me. You fight me.

    Thats not necessarily the point
Factions places a sort of restriction on the experience.

In other Words, no factions = more freedom. In addition, Factions tend to Divide the Community in-game & Forums. (I've seen this happen before )

You " could " say ... that the Closest things to Factions is Personal Guild Alliances - but that in itself based on each Guild's Choices and how they operate amongst themselves - these things could change at any moment. And those " same things" are entirely based on the Individual Player(s). This will be more Prevalent & Fruition-ed  when the MMO is released and it's " inner-workings " begin to reveal itself.

In short, you're " Factions " is based on Node Citizenship - Node Zone vs Node Zone. At the same time, you might have " double-agents " within your Own node. However there's even more freedom to this - although you have a Node Citizenship, the Activities you do will too, have more Freedom.

Basically ... just do what you want. Create you're own Agenda.

Another way of wording this ...

" you are not confined to the Coded-in Narrative, rather the Coding itself has much more Freedom for it's Player's Activities. "

All the While, still being well-rounded and contributing to Discovering the Lore & (possibly) help your Node-Construction

    ( if Applicable ?  :p )

  • Might be religious factions and race factions - all player-created and tenuous.

    And have another ale
  • D&Devil  >:) ooooooo ooooooo  >:)
  • People will create their own factions, and then we will fight among those factions. If we were good at living faction free we wouldn't have so many world problems.
  • Free for all brawl of the factionless
  • I'm waiting to see a duel between @WinterAssassin and @Solarion.
  • It's not that there are no factions, it's that those factions will arise organically depending on the community and will be more like the people of YeOldTowne versus the people CityMcCityFace and of course guild wars.

I will say it now, and I will say it again, but the people of YeOldTowne are a bunch of pretentious pompous elitist pricks. "YeOldTowne"??? Oh look at me, I'm fancyyyyyy.

Now CityMcCityFace. Now that's a name that's upfront, without any pretension. Do you know it was voted by the citizens of the city and the city council initially had misgivings about the name but decided to honor the citizens' decision in the end?
  • What's the tea?
  • I'm curious if guild members will be able to murder each other, or will a guild be like it's own little faction where you can't be flagged for eachother. Will guilds be able to make alliances with other guilds making that alliance essentially it's own growing faction?

if it looks at you funny you have rights to stab it. At least that's my outlook.
  • Fight everyone, it'll be one giant fight club, but just remember the first rule of Fight Club.

Doesn't that mean you already failed?
