Immersion breakers

Comments

  • Static mobs that are obviously waiting around forever to hand out to other people the same quest that I already completed.
Like Misha Tor'kren in Durotar, who waits perpetually for someone to find news of her lost son, Kron. Even after I've brought her his belongings and she says she knows he's dead.

Standing in a line to kill / collect to complete a quest objective.......
This was so common in WoW. From starting quests to daily quests. The entire experience, while enjoyable, was really tedious and predictable.

What was really funny was when certain mobs would have zone-wide dialogue that everyone would be able (forced?) to read whenever someone aggrod them over and over.

"Pitiful meat bags! Feel the full force of the Dragonmaw!"

It's pretty difficult for successful games to avoid. At some point the demand for content outstrips the content.
  • Yeah don't get this whole immersion thing. I am always aware that I am participating in a virtual world. This thread should really be called "Things you see or experience in game that bother you."

Zerging. Zergers. I just hate them.
This isn't StarCraft, so you should be pretty safe.
Seeing terminology like this is what kills the game for me. People spouting nonsense that isn't even related to the game.
"Yeah I hate quarterbacks in this game." Oh, wrong game, this isn't football.
Does Ashes of Creation consist of Zerg?
No it doesn't, due to copyright issues.
  • I guess its not so much about breaking my immersion but politics in zone chat just brings out the worst in some people, and you will always find those who just love to troll zone chat.

Just block the chat out. I usually turn it off to avoid all that nonsense because we all know that is normally full of that crap. So unless the devs come up with a way to prevent it in a reasonable manner then I'd expect it in Ashes as well.

Quests that are simply incorrect about you.

For example: In Elder Scrolls, near the beginning, a person questions your story because you are wearing slaver armor. Even if you have no slaver armor on or are carrying any.

    Drives me nuts.
In their defense, when the game first came out the only characters talking to that NPC were newly escaped.  But you're right, it's been a while since the change and they should clean that up.

Oh yes... Everyone standing at one spot where an important mob will spawn for a quest item. Get 3 seconds to hit him once or you won't get the quest item because so many people are there that the mob dies in 3 seconds...
That was the Blood Elf starting area at the launch of Burning Crusade.  lol

  • I'm not so much into immersion but things that do annoy me are:
    • People who are jumping all over the place
    • People who treat universial chat channels as their personal chat
    • Bugs
    • Quest that start out solo and end up needing group or raid to complete
    • Modern clothing and commercial logos
    • NPCs that don't react to what is happening like a monster comes to town and they go about their business like nothing is happening out of the ordinary
  • I can agree with pretty much all of the a-fore mentioned breakers.

There is a small one that always causes my eye to tick, that is in every game I go . . . Invisible sheaths, weapons that stick to clothing, or simply hover there impossibly unaided by magics.
I just don't get it. My weapons should drop to the ground if I try to adhere them to my waist or back.
Sheathes, scabbards, holsters, harnesses, bandoleers, what-have you. I need these. They hold my weapons. At least they SHOULD. Also, options on where and how to wear them (within reason; I won't be drawing a claymore from my hip, obviously.)

For those who seem unable to make the same immersion connections as some of us here, keep in mind many of us are likely pen-and-paper gamers coming from long backgrounds of DnD and the like. We relied heavily upon these things to keep the stories in our heads steaming forward. We spoke in different accents. We may have used props. Some of us might have even worn robes and wizard hats. It isn't that we can't enjoy and play this game if it has these labeled "breakers," they are simply personal story speed bumps we'd love to see smoothed out.

Magic allows weapons to adhere just fine.

But, I think that Ashes has sheathes.

I don't like to turn zone chat off because at times it  can be quite amusing, often people request help, offer things for sale, its how we communicate in game for the most part. When people do start to argue its more of an eye roll on my behalf and just tune it out and get on with what I am doing. Honestly just want people to get along and realise that people don't always agree with their point of view, so accept it and just play the game we are all there to have fun supposedly.

Oh man, my biggest is funky names.

    Examples:
    -XxXDragonSlyrXxX
    -DonaldTrump
    -Best_Rogue

Not so much the game's fault, but I do prefer lore based naming restrictions.

This tops my list and it would appear I am not alone B)

If you don't have at LEAST the minimum of creativity needed to make up a name then maybe you should be doing something else. Really not that damn difficult.
  • What I consider a wise person said about names in games...."it lets me know who to avoid."  You have one of THOSE names I'm probably going to avoid you.
  • Okay, I just watched a video of another MMO that @Rumbleforge recommended, and immediately noticed a huge immersion breaker for me... Bad character animations :scream:
  • most of the things have already been said like jumping people, static mobs.  everywhere.
However for me, the thing that really breaks immersion is linked to difficulty.
When I get a quest like:

"you must kill creature/enemy X in cave Y. But be careful, creature/enemy X is really dangerous! he has killed many warriors!"

And I proceed by one/two shotting X, that really breaks the immersion for me.

    PS.
Also people with goofy armour colours, breaks it for me, in a minor way though.

Yeah, I felt those animations were pretty stiff too.  I don't know if they were placeholder animations or not, but they felt really dated.  Like, 20 years ago dated.
  • 1) Crappy storyline...  The kind of... Hey, let's go back in time, but to another dimension so that it's not like really going back in time.

    2) Inconsequential death penalties. I would like to have a RP server with permadeath;

    3) Badly designed world: Loading screens, instanced areas, completely different biomes sitting next to each other, static NPC's that never change, static buildings and locations rotting for ages in the same situation (i.e.: stuff that keeps burning for years before the devs decide to change it in a long overdue patch), invisible walls, and so on and so forth.
  • The thing that has always ruined my immersion is stealth.  Besides that it is an OP ability, and should never have been introduced into a game.  Seeing a character disappear right before my eyes or materialize standing in my face just breaks any immersion that I may of had.
  • Major areas spammy chats, mostly. I always hated to visit a magnificent city for the first time, enjoying the magic of the moment... while being overwhelmed by blabbering nonsense, spambots, gold sellers, money beggars and so on.
Could make me want to siege a metropolis on my own :)

    Oh, and people spamming jump.

Whenever I'm bored in a game, and talking to friends with voicechat on Discord, I'm that type of guy thats jumping around for no reason... Sorry mate, can't help it!  :#

Please spare me, don't kill this poor duck....

Don't worry, my fellow duckish traveler. It's not such a big deal, after all. It's only a bunch of bored players jumping around. And then keep jumping. And jumping. And ju-

  • stupid lore breaking names, that is what the name generator is for. I don't care if you are not a roleplayer, use the damn name generator if you can't think of a name.

Fabulous names right? Call of Duty names are the best! 100%!
  • I have to agree with several of you that the crazy names are a bit of a turn off.
