Immersion breakers

Okay, I just watched a video of another MMO that @Rumbleforge recommended, and immediately noticed a huge immersion breaker for me... Bad character animations :scream:
Yeah, I felt those animations were pretty stiff too.  I don't know if they were placeholder animations or not, but they felt really dated.  Like, 20 years ago dated.
On the plus side, this game is still in the testing stages and things like that are usually left for the fine tuning later. On the minus side however I looked closely at P:RotF and all of the combat footage I saw was static. You ran up to a mob and you each attacked the other until one died. That was a huge turn off for me so I moved on.

Oh man, my biggest is funky names.

    Examples:
    -XxXDragonSlyrXxX
    -DonaldTrump
    -Best_Rogue

Not so much the game's fault, but I do prefer lore based naming restrictions.

This tops my list and it would appear I am not alone B)

If you don't have at LEAST the minimum of creativity needed to make up a name then maybe you should be doing something else. Really not that damn difficult.

I was thinking of rolling with 733tbigepeen.  Can I join your guild?
  • Crazy mounts that make no sense, bad voice acting or writing, Griefers, and ridiculous transmog.
  • Sit down shops. people littering a town with "WTS sword of a thousand truths 1000G" above their heads.
  • Immersion breakers:

Mapping that "creeeps," so that where once a tree stood on a hillside, now the tree becomes buried in the hillside ... as do the animals who flew around the tree.

Invisiwalls that keep you from climbing/jumping here, when if you go to the right slightly, you can climb/jump around the inviswalls; what was the purpose of them, again?

Seats you can't sit on, beds you can't lay on, bars you can't lean on, glasses/plates you can't drink or eat from

Weather that immediately stops/changes between one zone and another, same for seasons

The ability to craft outrageous characters that, irl, would not live nor be able to function

All of these are, for me, game-introduced or -denied mechanics; what players do or don't do is irrelevant to me, as I can selectively choose to see/not see them.

Renegade Chimp Commander Shepard finds this offensive.

I'm not sure, @Isende, if I got you on this: what do you mean by a character who "would not live nor be able to function"? You mean from a visual/aesthetic point of view, or equipment-wise?

Lol, fair enough question. To begin, understand that I'm a Massage Therapist. This means that I've studied the human body inside and out, from the atomic level up.

In the picture you've presented, this is not a more outrageous "defect." In fact, while his jaw is altered, the mandible displaced, he would still be able to speak (with some issues), and he'd be able to eat. This means he would be viable within the game world. Lol, I won't go into the neck/jaw pain/issues he'd have, but they'd exist.

In my first example, the golden winged lady, you can see an outrageous pair of ta-tas. I don't consider them immersion-breaking, even though I know full well that the law of gravity would really impede these from staying this outthrust. However, some component of her costume could account for the "lift" her girls experience.

However, in my second example, we see a character whose creator worked within the allowable limits to create a character that is laughable. But to me, I look at that and say "Wow, he'd barely be able to eat, and he'd be prone to all kindsa infections/illnesses, because one of the major openings into the body isn't protected with mouth/lips, nor even gums." For me, this person would likely have died young, very young; I mean, that mouth couldn't even latch on to suckle. So I hold the chargen (thanks, BDO, for both examples!) responsible, for allowing the creation of characters who are supposed to be viable and heroic to be, rather, something that I don't think could be very viable.

This second example isn't as extreme as some I've seen, but it is a good example of what I'm talking about. I won't argue the merits of that person's character creation, but only offer it as an example of what I'm talking about.

Sorry @Isende, I missed your point
  • @Isende I see your point here, nice explanation indeed.

I have to admit that anatomical defects doesn't bugger me too much. My biggest issue is with nonsensical equip, like high heels or nude-look armors. I actually think that deformed characters (as the second pic you posted) are quite creative and interesting. Undoubtedly, less boring than the so-predictable, perfect-bodied, clean-shaved, determined-looking generic anime young guy you ALWAYS find on eastern style MMOs. At least, misshapen characters have their twisted charisma and unique personality.

Despite all the rational reason you provided to demonstrate they would have a very short life span.
  • Star wars the old republic was normally very good at making sure that they referred to the right character gender, one quest line though my girl toon got referred to as a bloke all the way along....

Anyway, I'd agree with almost everything in this thread, the lists of annoyances, the point that annoyances is probably ask they are...

As someone who's normally keeping in ear to voice chat anyway, it's tricky to break my immersion in the game.
When you've previously had a guildie who gamed practically on top of their toilet, nothing ashes random can do can top that for immersion breaking.

The original post is "What do you find immersion breaking?" My response was simply what I, personally, find immersion breaking, and one of those things is characters who are created who, for me, defy what I see as being viable.

*chuckles* Yeah, well, what's immersion breaking for me ain't immersion breaking for everyone, right? I am well-able to accept that!

Sorry @Isende, another failed attempt at humor on my part :disappointed:

*sniffs* I'm sorry! I gotta get on board your humor train, man! I feel so lacking now!
  • Traps. Traps everywhere.
  • I'll add another, being referred to as a male when I'm female.  I really hate that.  I hope the NPCs will have gender recognition.

Perhaps you are just in yard of someone who has  fetishes for traps?

I have to agree with several of you that the crazy names are a bit of a turn off.
For me they are just targets to hit first in pvp.

I just realized I must have annoyed a ton of people with my name over the years. Since my name isn't based on "lore", but rather a nickname I was dubbed in everquest back in 1999 and have kept it ever since. Ah well. Not changing Saeyo Prayers is staying lol
  • As far as in game mechanics that we know exist, Monster coins. Silly names are a big one as well that was already covered here. Also, lines and lines of people all piled into the single useful spot in a whole, wider area. Let's hope we don't see that!

I hate when weapons clip into the character while holstered.  Like a sword that's strapped to your back, but half of it buried inside your body/armor.
  • What I hate is when you drink a shit load of alchohol and it either does nothing or reduces ur stats by a tiny bit. When I'm wasted in game, I want my screen to go all wobbly and make me feel like I am going to vomit with my character. I want there to be an option where when your character is drunk, alternative options pop up in npc conversations where you can choose to do something stupid. I want to get drunk at a tavern as a lvl1, then convince a pro hunter npc that I can fist fight the dragon he has been trying to hunt. I want to get npc's drunk and convince them to lemme run their falafel shop down the street for a day.
  • I'd love to be able to flirt and tease people and npcs =p

But for me I hate idea that npcs stand in one location forever, let them seem normalish!

Yeah.. Would be nice if they even paced/wandered around in a small designated area.. Especially quest NPC's, atleast make them look like they're in need of questers.

So much this. I'd totally love to see drunken PvP masters in game, experts in owning their enemies while their character keeps stumbling around.

Something else which really annoys me in game just popped out in my mind. I hate big numbers when talking about statistics, damage, healing and so on. I'm a fan of those old-school RPG, where the damage range was always lower than 999. I find really irritating see big numbers floating around.

"YOU INFLICTED 173452 DAMAGE OMG": really pointless, if you ask me.
  • Drunken Brawling! ooo sounds great, fists only and your opponents weak points light up intermittently like a Christmas tree! @Lexmax will be permanently lit of course! :p
