@CylverRayne I was just sharing my story. Nothing less, nothing more. Sorry if what I said offended you in anyway. I was not at all targetting anyone or any group, nor I was making insuniations of any sort.

I'm a bit confused right now.

In '99/2000 when I played EQ I took advantage of the attitude toward women.  I made a female character (I'm a guy in RL) and claimed to be a young teenaged girl new to gaming and my big brother said girls can't play and maybe he's right because I can't figure anything out...

Within minutes someone would come by and show me how to play and inevitably give me a ton of money and/or some valuable gear.  I'd then drop that off, log onto my main, and pick it up.  (There was nothing as sophisticated as mailing things to alts or shared bank space back then.)  I pulled this scam numerous times.

I'm not proud of those acts.  I took advantage of (presumably) well-meaning players and it wasn't clever, just cruel and greedy.  I wouldn't do anything like that these days.  But I think it shows how attitudes were back then (if they're different now).  I tried the same tactic with a male character not pretending to be a girl and it didn't have the same result.
We call that being an online sexual predator. Who knows what else you're hiding, or lying about, if you cant even be honest about your gender. I hope I never see you in game.
I suppose that could be a gender predator.
That behavior is perfectly legit in a roleplaying game - especially for someone roleplaying a rogue/thief/bandit/illusionist.
    Nothing sexual about it.

Let me ask you then what does gender have absolutely anything to do with it, seriously?  Why not make post about all your friends being nice and having manners.  Why is there is even need for the gender nonsense?  It would the exact same effect if I made post saying that my group of black friends all acted respectable towards me.  It's nothing more than a veiled validation seeking post that perpetuates differences, not one giving genuine praise.
I suppose gender is a factor when the person's experience is that one gender typically behaves in a manner that is perceived as undesirable... and then a specific group from that gender behaves in a manner that the person greatly appreciates.

In this particular case, the significant trait happened to be gender, but it could also be about PvP folk or PvE folk or roleplayers or non-roleplayers or a specific PUG or a group from an opposing faction. "Typically, I haven't been treated the way I'd like to be treated by this segment of players - but I want to give props to a specific group in that segment who did treat me the way I like to be treated. Thanks!"

The OP is about the surprise many dudes had back in the day when they discovered a real life woman playing an FPS - at a time when most female avatars were played by men...be cause relatively few women played shooters.
Gender is pivotal for that sentiment/memorial.

Many feminists have fought for years for total and complete equality in every area YET they still want men to defer to them, open doors for them, give up their seat on the bus for them, not cuss over voice chat......

I'm older and I was taught to always be a gentleman but I can understand if the younger generation of men just let women fend for themselves.... they did ask for it after all.
Well you know what they say about chasing two hares.
  • Its always amazing to me what words or meaning some people seem to add on top of what people say sometimes without knowing the person or their intentions. Knowing a person and understanding their intentions makes the true meaning of things.. would be nice if people took the good out of stuff that was presented in a complimentary manner and didnt infer unintended things.
  • On subject.. (mostly since this has become something slightly different)
Memorial encounters... why yes.. i have several. Everytime a female trusted me enough to even tell me she was an actual female due to all the immature jerks that think online is a license to troll or be obscene. The fact that someone even feels a need to acknowledge nice players is a testament to the sad shape of some of the gaming genres and communities over the years. And the fact they get backlash over it is even more testament.. sheesh. To the discussion over how a man should be.. well.. for one Ill tell ya that no normal human being is designed to want to be alone in life. People approval whether male or female should matter and make you feel good after the fact but shouldnt be the driving force to be that way in the first place.. its positive reinforcement. A real man or even woman for that matter should be strong enough to do the right thing and act the better person with no need for approval because they can/will be ridiculed over it by un-accepting and/or immature people. So approval is always well recieved. Also.. a good woman should make the man feel good as it should the other way around also in a relation. I dont know how this thread even got so convoluted.. if people think being a real man or woman means they shouldnt enjoy some respect, compliments and appreciation.. well your dead wrong.
  • I am and always will be a gent to others ladies and gents.
I will also be scum to scum (male or female).
I am simply a reflection of the world around me.

@OP I've been around long enough to witness the cringe worthy reactions to female gamers. I am glad that has changed. Perhaps women were an alien concept to basement dwellers. But then again, I came from a place and time when most women were wolf whistled with a barrage of unwanted attention and insinuation in real life. Times change.....and they have changed a lot.
