Do you think that age will matter?

You see, I am 15 years old and I am wanting to start playing MMORPG's and I, at the moment, is playing others to gain experience. I have seen a lot of guilds that are only publishing for 18+ but do you think that age matters in this game? I'm just wondering as I have never asked this question before and I am asking this question to see if people can give there opinion on the ages in MMORPG's.
Thanks for your time

  • That entirely depends on the guild that is recruiting.
  • I highly doubt that Ashes will be R18 but I think most Mmorpgs have a PG13 rating so I expect it to be that so you should be fine (however I don't think it has been confirmed) :) A lot of guilds have a 18+ rating due to having a maturer audiences and some maturer content that is not appropriate for <18.
I'm sure you'll find the right guild for you :) I started playing mmos about age 12 sooooooo you'll be fine xD
  • The age restriction is often used to avoid dramas, for instance, horny kids trying to hit on EVERY single girl walking past their character and end up making a scene for x reasons but like  95% of the guild don't care.

One other reason is chat/voice chat. Although I never experienced it or seen it myself, I remember that in one of the guilds I visited, one of their guild mates was using Ts3 with them and they were in a raid. At some point, the conversation started going nsfw because of a monster who looked like a man's pride. And it happened. The mother of the guy heard those guys and her son talking about that and shit happened.
This is not something which happens often, but it might and it's better to not take any risk.

So the 18+ is here for "Please no drama, don't be a whiny little kid, be sure that you can handle mature language and not be offended by the first racist/whatever joke someone said when he didn't mean anything behind it, stay cool and free". Because we're here to play for fun.

Age has nothing to do with it. Its how mature you are.

Like if you spam in guild chat help I am dying. We would first find out what is the problem. If its just being a noob we let that slide. If we know its some griefer we would come and help you.

If you die in the most unusual ways we need to educate you.

If you have a cape and think your superman and die we will not help you.

If you keep asking the guild for gold because your too lazy, it my seem we need to path ways.

    P.S.
When I ran my eve online corp we had the Window Licker Award. This was awarded at great expense to your character.
You had to really do something stupid. But we were fair. All the officers had to agree for that person to get awarded that.

Age doesn't matter in the game and it depends on the mindset you have and how mature you are in your game style. It will help you to improve your gameplay by doing that.
Guilds make 18+ like people are saying to avoid drama and to have a mature community. The older people are the bigger chance to get that :D
But as long you take the game seriously when the time comes to do that, you will have no problem in the game  B)
The guild can also help you with getting a more mature gameplay, so it can also depend on the guild how they handle the problem ;)

I think you might be 18 or very close to 18 when the game fully releases anyway :P.

The plan for full release is for 2020 if I remember correctly.

Also probably lots of fun guilds won't care about age. You can even create your own. I was 14 when I first started playing mmo's and I've got a warm welcome from community (the guild I joined medium age was 25-30).
  • The "age" rule is hardly ever enforced with proof. If one comes across as mature, nobody's going to mind.
  • I cant see that age should matter. No one is going to know how old you are anyway unless you tell them.

Well.... That is if youre not 8 years old claiming to be 30 :P. It's kinda hard to miss it on the voice chat ^^

Try Aduro its a great guild here is their discord https://discord.gg/2ghkhuN (btw I am 13 :) )
  • @Fiastos I know feel more comfortable with someone else close to my age :sunglasses: fewww.... hahahaha
  • I partially agree w/ Waysm, I think the guild makes that known so if you are younger, and a more mature play style is not what you are looking for, it's like a warning.
Just like some music is "explicit 18+", it's just music and if you can handle it without spouting those types of lyrics off in front of a parent that prefers you don't it's no problem. However, if you don't want to hear those types of lyrics or often listen to your music with your parents, that might not be for you.

There is a plethora of guilds, pick one that fits you best mate!
  • I think you'll be fine.

Some guilds put out 18+ restrictions because some people just want to play with like minded and similar people.

A guild filled with 21+ year olds just won't have as much in common with 12-17 year olds. From childhood nostalgia to daily work life.

That doesn't necessarily mean you can't join. Most guilds hardly have a proper way of enforcement.
  • Unless your parents have a problem with you being online and the sites you surf it shouldn't be a problem. I have no intention of telling people how to parent their children and what level of exposure to how people act and speak in a gaming environment they should allow. But if you allow your 5 year old to play and then pitch a fit when they hear people in voice chat using "naughty" words, you need to rethink your parenting goals. A teenager in today's connected world should have no issues.

Honestly that is going to depend on you. I started when I was 11 but because I was mature for my age most of the guild aside from the GM and Officers had no clue I was 11 and the only reason they knew was because I felt the need to be honest and upfront with the leaders of the guild.

Needless to say things would get mature in chat but I would just keep quiet and not engage in a conversation on subjects I knew little or nothing about. Eventually I told everyone my age once I got comfortable with them. It embarrassed a few of the women only because of the things they had said in chat but I explaining that I was raised in public school and they weren't saying anything I hadn't already heard a million times so we had a good laugh about that and they continued to be themselves in chat.

As long as you conduct yourself appropriately most of the time it'll go something like that so I wouldn't worry to much about your age.
  • I have friends who let their 4 year-old play World of Warcraft.
Horrible, horrible parents who would bribe him with xp for good behavior.  :p
He could play up to Level 8 well enough that other players would ask him why he refused to chat with them, but of course, he couldn't even read yet.  :p

Some guilds have age restrictions. Others won't have age restrictions.
I don't join guilds that have restrictions because I hate restrictions.
But, you don't have to join a guild to have fun playing Ashes of Creation.

Also, as KiMi said, you will be close enough to 18 by the time the game launches, that it probably won't be an issue anyway.
  • I personally prefer playing with people who are older, but that's simply because I like people who are organized and have focus, which you find more often in older players.

There are of course exceptions and I've played with many younger people who were great.

So my preference may more be about personality than age.

In today's world I'm quite surprised if people even still follow age ratings anymore.  I can see it with younger kids, but to me it's rare to see teens restricted in any way anymore.
  • Summer Sausage likes 'em young, just saying.

Anyways I think the 18+ should be removed and replaced with Mature. At the end of the day, it boils down to the person, not their age.

I guess they should as for some reason I always felt restricted when there is 18+ as I don't wanna ask if I can join as I just feel like it will be a waste of time

If you think the guild is a fit, approach them. Don't let anything hinder you.

I work in a supermarket and age restrictions are still important, but ofcourse parents are much more relaxed about age restricted products. I think by law films /games etc have to have an age restriction. Heck in my work you need to be 18 to buy a PlayStation magazine. ^^ We have to refuse the sale by law.
Ofcourse you can just go online and there are ways around it all ^^ Heck when I was a kid used to go to the barralands in town and buy fake copies of games to dodge the age restriction xD
  • @Ketchup
The game itself won't be restricting you in any kind, I guess.

The guilds that recruite 18+ or 21+ have different reasons for doing so. I dare to say that most reasons are legit, but sometimes the people making those rules are 18+, but very childish themself.
I started playing MMORPGs in your age (when I was 15), and had a really good start.
I came across two guilds in two different games back then and they both helped me to progress my (real) character. Heck, we even met multiple times in real life to grill and party (even though I was still a minor back then).
If you start of with the right people, you won't have a problem.
If you start of with bad people, you'll probably want to quit MMORPGs really fast again.

Let me give you three advices:
    1. Search for a guild that is speaking your native language/is from your country - you'll have a better start with people who have the same values and speak the same language
    2. Search for a guild that isn't just focused on progress, which wants their members to complete task X in time Y - N times. You won't like staying there for too long
    3. Play the game to have fun - if a guild isn't the right place for you, the friendlist is still there for you - you might miss some content that only guilds will achieve, but you'll have fun in your own way, at every point in time

Haha I'm just curious in peoples thoughts in MMO's and the "age rule." but the good thing of playing online is no one knows who you really are, so I can buy steam guys and say I'm 18....  so I shouldn't really worry but I've never played an MMORPG and i wanted to see communities opinions on it.

  • I have a long standing rule to avoid any guild that has Dark, Elite, or Shadow in the name like the plague. Maybe I will get lucky and we will see <Dark Elite Shadows> for the perfect **** trifecta.

Wow, that is very detailed and does sound like a good "job opportunity". I'm still thinking if I should join a guild or be self-employed a such by having my stall to sell gear. One reason why I wanted to start playing MMO's is because it kind off relates to the real world, i guess for me it can be considered practicing for the real world lol

    Hey man....

    Don't diss my guild! xZ-EliteDarkShadowLords-Zx2

(The original is probably already reserved... So I decided to make sure I was at least the 2nd to think up this name)
