Some of the limited info we know so far:

The gateways have once again begun to move, what was buried and forgotten, has now risen to the surface.  The nations of the world have begun to send expeditions through these portals, to re-discover their past and explore this great new world.
In Ashes of Creation, you start out in the world having come back through the Great Divine Gateways.  You come from a non-magical world, where many nations and races exist.  These pioneers have different goals and objectives.  You have arrived to rediscover, rebuild and repopulate this world of your origin.

You don't start as a mage, back on homeworld you were a renowned physicist, and after coming through the portal, you realized that you could harness this new thing called "magic" without your technology, so you start out weak, and gain power over time. I can see the argument if you pop out of the portal at cap with all your abilities.

There must be a way for information to pass back through the portal also. Otherwise you would have governments just dropping citizens into some blue shiny tear by the thousands and not knowing what had happened to them. So that sets up their argument for lore friendly sales of "Join your friends on Verra at level cap with our new max level token." that will probably go on sale 5 years after launch. So the "mages" have been sending back info, and people are training in techniques for the brave new world.

If the demand is met and the game is truly ground breaking in the way so many of us want and hope, then revenue from subs/cosmetic store will be enough. If on the other hand it becomes niche with say 50-100k subs only once stabilized, then you can bet that we will see some scope creep when it comes to marginal "do this faster" stuff, with elaborate explanations about how the item is not truly p2win.

I'd imagine a land that is relatively untouched for centuries and full of magic, with all of its limitless applications, would be very enticing for any civilzation of peoples.

Also, everyone was chased out, so the chance to come back to their motherland would be quite nice.

Why do birds migrate? Why salmons swim upstream, or turtles know to walk into the sea after they hatch?
The opening of the gates might have just triggered some instinctual behaviour in some people?

The gods might be 'talking' through the gates, or sending visions?

But probably for the same reason why people climb Everest or spend two months+ sailing single handedly around the world.

I'm sure there will be a reason behind it, but I hope that some of it will be found thru quests and activities within the game. I get more impressed with an MMORPG when trailers give hints and players are able to find easter eggs related to the underlying story.

They got bored with what they were doing and came back to see what is happening. Once they see not much is happening they will leave again
