How popular/mainstream do you think Ashes will be?

  • For me i think Ashes has alot of potential to become a big MMO . And if the game is not shit player will come , and increase over time .
  • The fact that Ashes was going to be a subscription based game was one of the draws for me.  Thank heavens, and hopefully it will keep some of the scammers away.  If a game is good, it's worth paying for; and the attitude of players who pay are so much more community oriented than those who don't.

Me too, there was one MMORPG I played when I was really young which had both f2p and subscription based models. Problem was almost nobody played on subscription one so you had to play on the f2p where you had to grind large amounts of gold to buy ability to do certain activities for the month and you had to do this for multiple things each month.

  • This was said in a similar fashion on FFXIV Forums.  I think even Naoki Yoshida ( Producer/Director of FFXIV) said himself they aren't trying to kill WoW with FFXIV.  But he also said that the only thing that can kill WoW is itself and its doing a fair job of that already based on the complaints that were coming from the game's forums before the final expansion release.
hahahahah, the egoism is strong with this one.

There's a big difference between "we don't want to kill wow" and "we can't kill wow", and they are the later...

Yeah, the sad truth is that only blizzard can kill wow, but that's not cause there are no other way, but cause the sad fact that nowadays mmo maker suck... they suck very very hard, and can't even create a average game, not to mention a wowkiller one...

lol most even miss basic things like "common sense" or "logic" and it's clearly written on them, that the overwhelming majority of the developers never played with any video game, or was at the lowest level among the players...
And ofc they ignore the feedback from players who alone played more than the whole developer staff combined...

Normally one would create a game by playing and understanding it's competitors, find it's flaws, and create one which is similar in the good parts, but improved in the rest. (this is how the OLD blizzard created games, and become 1#)

However nowadays they create by starting with a so big ego, that's it visible from the moon. competitors? hah! who are they? I myself invented the hot water!! I will show them how to create a mmo!!!!444  /fails hard...

Reinventing core things aren't good. It maybe look nice on the advertisement, but that's certainty not the way to create a top game in a already existing genre.

Ehm, what business has to do with common sense, solve any consumer complain or please every comsumer? It is not possible.

Truth is, most of the players have no idea what is good for the game they playing. For example:

A: Please, take this item from CashShop, it is P2W.
B: This will cause lost of 1 million dolar in one year we can invest into servers.
A: Add more great costumes, problem solved.
B: This will not raise anything because when we add new costume, old costumes will not be profitable anymore.
    A: Add more content.
B: Ok, lets say it will cost 300 000 dolars, so we need 15 000 new subscribers to cover it and we still not talking about profit what we need to do other stuff.

Trust me, listen to do community every time is bad bad bad bad step.

It also depends how much they will listen to the comunity. Again, do not get me wrong. Most of us are idiots with no clue how real game economy should work to be sustainable and profitable and still have zillion ideas how to do it.

We can also talk about others aspects of the game, ofcourse. I know, we all know what we like, but how to combine it with the game as business project? I'll be honest. I have zero clue.

See, BnS, BDO, WoW, they all kinda shiting on playerbase complains and still they are in good condition.

Listening to the community is... hm... double-edge sword.

What I hope is that Ashes makes it, - it doesn't need to kill WoW, it just needs to be profitable, popular to a degree and stable. Same goes for new world of Star Citizen. Faith has been lost in the MMO world when it comes to deviating from the plan, heck faith has been lost in general. We need new blood, and new ideas to shake up the status quo.

Enough of developers chasing the working formula and ultimately failing.
Most importantly, we need a Subscription-based MMORPG to set itself apart from the rest of the MMORPGs out there, even the Free ones. I feel like over the past decade, a lot of faith has been lost in this particular Sub-Genre. Free To Play MMOs will get played so long as their cash-shops aren't P2W. Buy to Play MMOs will get played until the current content is completed and then those titles are shelved until new content arrives. The current standard for Subscription MMORPGs is buy the base game, play 30 days free, get a subscription to continue playing, beat current content, and then wait for the next update and/or expansion to release which sometimes results in canceling your subscription and playing other things while waiting. Hopefully Ashes with its node system and decision driven content will change this standard for Subscription-based MMORPGs!

  • I think there is room for the industry for more than 1 MMO, so no it wont be a WOW killer. I do think it will take significant players away from WOW, ESO.

Not sure if it will have massive impact on the Free to play games, it probably will to a extent only.
  • It will take the place of most of the asian MMO market, however it will not topple AAA industry leaders. WoW isnt good because "OMGITSWOW" its good because it has over a decade of polish.

That being said I will never play WoW again and havent now for a few years. I simply dont like the way the developers have done things.
  • Unless it caters to the casuals, it will never see numbers like Wow. Wildstar was a fun game, but tried to target the hardcore raider scene. It will either be niche or give the biggest player base what they want, which is casuals.

It has a bit of both, you dont carter to one player type and ignore the other.

Nope. They aren't reinventing the wheel there, as politic based gameplay of this scale already tried long ago in other games, and the overwhelming majority of players didn't like it, as it takes loots of time, slow and unfun. It maybe fun for the first time, but repetitive chore afterwards...

If you expect that this feature will make aoc work, then you will be very very surprised...

You are wrong. WoW is good cause it"s "OMGITSWOW" a.k.a cause it's fame.

And you are also wrong. wow didn't have a decade of polishing... wow have a decade of self ruining, as only the first 3expansion was polishing, everything done afterwards only made the game worse, and the subscriber count reflect it clear as day....

Ever since wow started it became easier and easier. In classic and bc, it was still too hard and time consuming for the low players, but at wotlk it was easy enough for casuals, but still hard enough for hardcore players, so the subscriber count reached it's peak with ~12,5million.

However they didn't stopped here, as they made it simpler and simpler, so they lost the hardcore players...

  • I mean this will sound elitist but its the truth. Games that have a niche or a unique feature do not get as many people as tried and tested formats and I'm okay with it. I would happily spend money on a game that is trying to remake the mould than play the new DLC of an older game. If people don't like what ashes are selling, then it's their loss as I'm going to enjoy it.
