I play a text based roleplaying game called DragonRealms that is monitored for cheating, foul language, and being out of character. However, there is only 400-700 people on at any given time.
It will be difficult to monitor thousands of people on multiple servers every time someone gets ganked and responds by saying "xxxx you". And honestly, do we really want to fault the player for that response.
I'm not fond of foul language, but that's not something I want the game masters to police. What irks me more is when people start joking about pedophilia and incest. Yet, I just want the situation dealt with - muted, banned for 24 hours, whatever. I don't need a public record of when Joe Schmoe was drunk off his butt and said some stupid thing.
I think public shaming is a horrible idea because it has the potential for all sorts of abuse.
- All games do having to do 2 things puts you off reporting in the first place.
Also I'd assume active GM's will look into reports as they come in (if poss, if not back check logs) like "we" do in other games. Having a report based reputation system from experience with GM'ing in other games just means Streamers get banned & Gold Sellers also funny enough find ways to make GM's jobs hell with this system. Since AOC is hiring people with experience i'm sure these wont be issues.
I did not know humans could retain memories with a time stamp and then decide to simply delete these memories from our minds after setting a timer for however long someone decides that person should be punished for.
Or are you saying that lets say Player A did this 'power levelling' thing, was reported and punished for 1 month by the GMs. You go on hating him - cuz I dont see any other reaction coming from you - for that period of 1 month. Now that the punishment time is over, can you 'just' go back to being his friend? Because you know, record is clear.
You should go to China and experience this "reputation score" in real life as they have some sort of social rating system similar to that one episode in black mirror.
I dont think I have read a more toxic comment or post till now on this forum.
Edit: So toxic that you had to change it from post to a comment and modify the post itself.
Edit: Do post your score here since you seem to be such a fan of public reputation scores.
Scam/Steal - That is the name of the game. There are alliances and alliances lead to betrayal.
"If we approach the castle siege and we've destroyed the walls and we're in the throne room and we're about to cast on the penultimate thing and I at this time am just so excited from what's happening that I'm like "screw it I'm gonna go for it". It's gonna be mine. I'm gonna take the taxes for the next month. I'm gonna take all the gear from the castle. I'm gonna take everything... We kind of want that political intrigue to be present in the game." - Steven Shariff. Check 'Zergs' in AoC wiki page.
What is the "appropriate" punishment for this person now?
This is not the real world. There is no law and you are not the lawmaker.
The punishable offence in a game are:
- Hacking - which should lead to permanent ban. Period.
- Botters
- Gold farmer
I dont presume to decide what the punishment for the other 2 offence should be cuz I dont have experience with these offenders. Botters is a more serious offence, similar to hacking actually but gold farmers are putting in the effort, so I dont have much issue with them and will have faith in GMs to take appropriate action.
We are there to play the game, not police it.
