With water mounts they should either not be as fast as boats or make it so that boats are alot safer to ride in vs the natural monsters in an area.

But, sail-boats aren't generally that fast, especially if they're loaded up with cargo, and there are fish that can swim at over 60mph.

True, but i think the largest offset is the utility, safety, and general arrangement of options that the ships will supposedly provide. I wouldn't be surprised if there are ships faster than the aquatic mounts seeing as they already describe some of the weapons as being magic-based. Speeder boats with some anti-wind resistance augments and water current manipulation.

However let us say that the mounts are generally faster than most boats. That means the mobs in the ocean should be terrifying to try and run from as it make sense that many of them can/should be able to chase the aquatic mounts in order to land hits on them. And if that is the case god have mercy on anyone that gets dismounted out there.

I wish we could look at how they compare with mechanics and such but unfortunately all i can give are guesses and assumptions.

    That sounds AMAZING!

I personally believe the Water Mounts to be an absolute necessity.
Ships (excluding Sea-Carawans) can only be summoned from a port or harbor.[18][19]

Ships aren't resummonable on open waters. Which means that, if your ship gets destroyed or stolen without yourself dying, then you'd be stranded in the middle of the ocean. At which point your only options would be, to:
    • drown yourself
    • swim back to the continents or the nearest island

The water mounts provide you / the Devs with the opportunity to let people get stranded in the open-sea with a realstic, non-teleporty way to rejoin the other ships or get back on land without wanting to rip your face off.

imo, that's exactly what Aquatic Mounts (apart from underwater content like treasure diving) should and will be used for.

For that very purpose, I'd make the Aquatic Mounts not useable for combat (apart from mount specfic abilities, like for example a shark biting into the ship and slowing it down) while you board the ship).

Instead I'd make them very interesting speed wise. Somewhat along the lines of:
    (Speed highest >>>> Speed lowest)
    1. Unloaded Speedboats
    2. Small Warship (Galleons)
    3. Aquatic Mounts
    4. Medium Warships (Frigattes)
    5. Trade Ships (Sea Caravans) + Loaded Speedboats
    6. Large Warships (Destroyers)

I disregarded stuff like Fishing Boats and other special boat classes as i don't think they are meaningful to the discussion.

Obviously, ship classes and mounts can have different speeds/abilities, depending on their loadout/breeding. The list above would be for "optimally speed bred" and the fastest ships of each class.

My guess is that a lot of aquatic mobs will be able to close the gap with some abilities while not being faster on average. Also enemies can have projectiles or even projectiles that apply CCs so travelling via a mount can still be quite risky even if water enemies aren't crazy fast. A boat will always be safer because you will other people on board + a boat can't be stunned (I think).

To use a Star Wars analogy, I see the larger ships as the Mon Calamari Cruisers - high powered, multiple weapons, large crew, capable of holding lots of stuff, but slow and not very manoeuvrable; and the aquatic mounts as the A-Wing fighters - small, agile, single-pilot, and very weak to damage. Both types of spacecraft are needed in a fleet.

What Warth said is the reason I dont want water mounts.

A giant middle finger to the depth of naval content, that's what they are. The easy way out of incovenience

    Gunnery.
Imagine having such plans for naval content being slowly ignored because we can ride sharks and cut corners.
While I do agree with you in the hope that water mounts don't negatively impact on the use of ships - I can't really see a situation where a multi-player vessel that has people dedicated to gunnery (what ever form that takes in Ashes) is able to be replaced by people on mounts.

Water mounts really should be looked at as being the water equivlent of running. Swimming is the water equivlent of slowly walking home while carrying too much - it really isn't something you would do unless you are forced in to that situation.

This leaves ships to fill in the role that mounts, mules, caravans and siege weapons do on land, while players are on the water - as well as the role of fishing boat of which there is no real land based counterpart - so I think there is still plenty of scope for both to exist.
