What features you dislike in MMOs and hope Ashes won't have?

As each MMORPGs have some good features (GW2 mounts, crafting system of SWG, housing of Wildstar *RIP* etc), they have some bad ones as well. They tend to have very similar features to WoW and other traditional MMORPGs which most people dislike and think they're outdated. There are two features I see in MMOs and despise. One of them is the 'artificial' feel most of MMOs in which case you just click stuff to do things with the mouse pointer (kills the immersion and looks ugly tbh). The other is boring and non skill based combat (both action: spamming abilities in order and tab: pressing buttons at the right time...) So, what features you don't want to see in Ashes of Creation?

I just hope, that they wont make it too easy...

Escort missions where the person you are escorting moves slower than a snail and stops every few meters for some arbitrary reason.

I'd also hate to see classes that are either gender or race-locked.

in old runescape you could trade for whatever price you wanted.
Need a runic pickaxe? Depends on how good your skill and luck as a merchant was you could get one for anywhere between 15k gold an 35k gold. Then they introduced item values and you couldn't go a set percentage underneath or above. I'm aware that they did that to combat goldselling probably, but still.. that killed trading for me :(

ah that sucks and kinda comes to my point of 'artificial feel'. Just let people set the price they want...Let's hope Ashes will give that much freedom to players

Making the game easier is fine. WoW's problem was they made things really easy in wrath and then immediately made things a lot harder in Cata. Anyone who hadn't played during TBC wasn't prepared (pun intended) for the sudden increase in difficulty.

Did you feel challenged leveling up? Did you remember in which region you leveled up in lvl50/80/90? Did you remember anything while leveling in the current build? I bet you dont, because to be honest... neither did i.
They cut out half the entertainment of an MMORPG, the leveling, and thrust people into the max content and force feed them whatever is currently hip.
I remember when I had to be resourcefull while levling. I remember when you had to think while dungeon diving, if you are tanking healing or dd doesnt matter... Currently you can go into a dungeon for your level while leveling as a dd and just run in and YOU WONT DIE. A few friends and me tried it. We all went damage, no healer and no tank, and we just started killing everything SO fast, that we didnt die or needed heals...
They implemented LFR, and started to show people raids in betas, leading to guids already being uploaded BEFORE THE RAIDS COME OUT! Normal and Heroic gets cleared in a day by strong raiding guilds. There is no experimenting anymore in raids. They know what is comming, how to handle it and how much dps they have to do, when to use bloodlust/heroism before even entering the raid or starting the specific boss.

Fast travel the world needs to feel big again.

No more LFG or LFR get the community back into MMO's no more I can do it all by myself. Form some relationships who knows some of you might like it.

Well we do know that scientific nodes will have fast travel to and from their nodes at a certain level, but that will at least be restricted to the specific node and not across the whole world. ^^
I think a tool to find other people would be nice, something like in GW2, and i really hope that AoC will never get LFR xD

I don't have a problem with a group finder interface that allows players to advertise for additional players, but there should be some communication between players, no automated systems that just throw groups together semi-randomly.

This is true but it will only be for 1/5 of the world assuming only 1 scientific metro but it is the metro superpower so am ok with it.

I dislike it if MMO's dont have a autowalk option, honestly holding W with middlefinger for minutes long makes no sence. Also if you have autowalk and free camera, you can cast skills/dodge while walking and looking 360 making for quick responses when getting attacked from behind.

  • The P2W obviously, but Intrepid alredy says that this is out of discussion, ummmm...
Maybe I can say to take back the idea of proficiency with weapons, sure every class can use every weapon but if there could be a system where you can achieve certain mastery in the use of a weapon then you do more damage, more chance of a critical hit or maybe if you found a legendary drop but if you don't have enough proficiency with the type of weapon that legendary is you can't use it,

  • Eliminate PvP. Definitely PvP. Joking of course.

Seriously, though trivial, I don't want nameplates with level and quantitative HP on them, or the ability to scan someone's stats or equipment (without permission?). I want to make people take the risk of attacking something/someone strong (especially if lore out there would tell them about the threat). I like the adrenaline rush of approaching something for the first time and not knowing how the battle will end. Seeing "Lvl 15, 2350 HP" just ruins discovery and immersion.

Holding the players hand, minimaps, fast travel, detailed quest directions, stupidly easy quests, no skill required in combat just level and gear and some basic know how, static non-changing world, information on other players (kills off an aspect of pvp which could be used), dungeons/raids being quite easy once you read a guide on them or get a good enough strategy, lack of unique 1 of a kind items that only 1 person may posses and have special abilities. Not giving the option to make big boobs and ass for my character. Reskinned armors being put out as a new item, ugly gear unless you pay for it or grind to death like a fool, auto-pathing.

I dislike a lot really, I want to have an enjoyable but challenging time when I play so I feel rewarded for my effort.

I agree with this. I dislike not being able to hide my gear/stats/build. Being able to inspect someone and see every detail about their character is something that I don't want. I enjoy having to have my own spreadsheets and test my own theories, and I don't want other people to reap the rewards of my or others hard work just by inspecting.

    I feel the same way.

I dislike a few things other MMOS have, some are in my view very easily avoidable, some have become a staple of the genre but are still avoidable, and some are straight up unavoidable for the multiplayer aspect of the game.

I dislike a game designed around fast travel with insane amounts of backtracking that just assumes the player will teleport to go back. I love that ashes will be designed around no fast travel so they will be more mindful about where to send us.

I dislike when an event is happening around a town, camp or city where mobs are "attacking" it but if you don't do anything nothing happens. So you as the player are supposed to help defend it only for the reward, not because something was at stake from the start. I hope this will be solved with the nature of nodes and force of nature events.

I dislike having to repeat content. When I managed to kill a boss or unique(elite/named) mob after great effort and team work just to have him/her "re-spawn" after some time when I go back into that cave. I mean what was the point?
At least hide the need to do it behind some lore explanation like FF14 does it where you can't really kill them; Because their souls can travel back from the dead and "rebuild" the body using the crystals offered by the summoning parties.
In this same category I dislike seeing other player being asked to complete the same quest I just did. Daily and weekly quests fall into this one as well. If I just spent some time putting out the fire in your farm I expect it to be extinguished I don't want you asking every passer by to put out the flames I just put out old man! Or make them actual repeatable tasks that I can believe are repeatable.

Another thing is when a new expansion comes out and suddenly all your progression up to that point means nothing. All your strength is worth nothing. Someone that comes into the game as a new expansion is coming out can catch up and outgear you by just skipping all the previous expansion raid content and getting a couple of common or uncommon items for the new expansion. Like hey you see this sword I bought form an NPC? it's stronger than that mace you got after killing a god.

I got more but that will come in a follow up post so I don't end up with a wall of text nobody would read xD

I like the idea of lockboxes if there is a picklock skill even if it's class restricted or the ability to craft keys, however I think having to buy keys for lock boxes could be considered P2W if lock boxes could contain anything remotely useful, so it likely won't be in the game.

The hand-holding and trying to please everyone sure didn't help increase the game's fun.

I really hope AoC has content that's difficult, and skills with a real developed learning curve. I'm not the best player, but I can appreciate a challenge. That's what keeps it interesting.

  • What I dislike is having to have a certain gear score or dps before a group will let you join them. In Rift most end game groups say you have to have over one million dps and armor rating of over 75,000 before they will let you join them.

Unfortunately any game with a power progression system is going to have this to some degree. Some groups set the bar higher than it needs to be because they want the run to go smooth. However without damage meters it'll be more difficult for groups to kick people because of poor damage output, but if you're gear is too low you'll still most likely get denied groups.

Well dps is pretty important in raids to be honest...
As long as you pull your weight then no problem, but there are tons of people who just dont do anything to better themselves, and raidleads have the responsibility to kick such people.
And yes, i hate gear score too! :D
